Chapter 281: Chapter 39 Father and Daughter

Golden Eyes did not, as he had when kidnapping Li Yu, stuff Clara into a sack.

He helped the little maid onto the horse’s back before mounting himself, took the reins, and the brown horse sneezed. With its master’s urging, it set off at a brisk trot.

The oncoming cold wind soon made Clara shiver.

She had thought it was just a short trip when she left the house, and had not anticipated riding a horse, so she had not worn a particularly wind-resistant cloak.

Seeing this, Golden Eyes pulled out a blanket from behind and tossed it to the little maid.

"Thank you," Clara said, wrapping herself entirely in the sheepskin blanket leaving only her head exposed, and immediately felt warmer. She then began to look around curiously.

"Are we... heading toward Teacup Castle?"

"Correct."

"But Merlin and the black hounds are there, along with the warriors from the Arias family."

"That’s exactly why no one would think we would leave from there."

Golden Eyes paused for a moment, then continued, "Last time, we retreated through the Pope Family’s lands to the south, but this time Merlin will definitely be closely watching that direction."

"Then you could go north."

"..." Golden Eyes silently agreed.

At first, Clara didn’t understand why Golden Eyes reacted that way, but soon she had an epiphany, "You’re afraid of Prophet Merlin."

Golden Eyes didn’t deny it, "I’m already a hundred years old, and for all those years, I’ve been an unbeliever, never believing in any of that mysterious nonsense, until that night when I met him. I saw with my own eyes him running over that stream, his feet stepping on the water’s surface without sinking.

"For the first time, I was unable to comprehend what I saw. And that wasn’t even the end of it. Later, I definitely captured him, but he still disappeared right before my eyes. It was a true disappearance, without any sign, so sudden as if he turned into air."

"Mmmhmm, I understand, the Prophet isn’t from our world; he can move freely between the Divine Country and the mortal realm." The little maid said, "I’ve also seen him disappear many times."

"After I returned, I learned some more about him. Before, I always thought it was just baseless stories spread by superstitious villagers, but now I can’t tell what is rumors and what is truth."

"In my life, I’ve faced countless enemies, but none has been as inscrutable as him. Therefore, I must be extremely cautious in dealing with him, I cannot afford a single mistake," Golden Eyes said.

"You could actually choose not to be his adversary," Clara suggested.

"Hm?"

"Being Merlin’s ally feels much better than being his enemy; Miss Irelia would have the most sentiment about that."

"Is that so, too bad that he and I are fated to be enemies, not friends," Golden Eyes said.

"Don’t be so absolute," Clara said, "I know someone who is a lot like you, not exactly a good person, but not all that bad either, and in the end, he also joined the Double Rest Sect."

"You seem to misunderstand something, the reason I gave you the blanket wasn’t out of any lingering conscience; it was because the person who gave me orders insisted that I must bring you back safe and sound."

Golden Eyes said coldly, "To me, you are no different from a piece of cargo. And I can assure you, there is absolutely no one in this world who is worse than me. The person you know, the blood on his hands, is probably just a fraction of what I’ve spilled."

Clara shut her mouth when she heard this.

At first, Golden Eyes thought the little maid had finally been frightened, but after a while, Clara unexpectedly spoke up again, "Where are your companions? The night you attacked Prophet Merlin, there were quite a few people, right?"

"They had other tasks to carry out... The more people involved in this operation, the easier it is to be exposed. It’s actually easier to succeed alone."

"What tasks?" Clara’s curiosity rose again.

"That’s none of your business."

"Oh." The little maid changed the subject, "Then where are we staying tonight? Are we going to sleep in the wilderness...?"

Golden Eyes was getting annoyed by the questions, "Didn’t you just hear what I said? I’m a bad person who kills without blinking an eye, not just men, but women, elderly, and even infants in their swaddling clothes will not be spared by me. Aren’t you afraid?"

"But you also said you were acting on orders, and the person who ordered you is having you take me back unharmed," the little maid blinked innocently.

"......"

Golden Eyes now wanted to slap himself twice for talking more than necessary just now.

Afterward, Clara began to ask about the people who captured her.

Golden Eyes only said that it was a big shot and that she would know when she saw the person.

Unconsciously, the two of them had already approached the Teacup Castle. Golden Eyes narrowed his eyes and could even see drones floating above the castle, a magical construct he had never seen before.

Golden Eyes felt a natural sense of wariness and repulsion towards those flying iron birds, so he didn’t linger any longer and immediately rode into the nearby woods.

Since most of the villagers nearby had gone to see Miss Irelia’s initiation ceremony, and the Arias family guards were also stationed around the Teacup Castle, the woods were unexpectedly deserted and quiet at this moment.

Furthermore, with Golden Eyes taking unforeseen and secluded paths, zigzagging about, the journey was surprisingly smooth. Just as they were about to exit the forest, Golden Eyes relaxed a bit.

But at that moment, he suddenly heard rustling noises from the bushes beside him.

Then, he saw an old farmer emerge holding a wild rabbit and a simple trap.

Their eyes met, and both were startled.

Golden Eyes hadn’t expected to encounter anyone else here and had been seen by that person with Clara.

As for the old farmer, he was hunting in secret without the Lord’s permission, and what he had caught was a rabbit—a creature protected on the Arias family’s land.

He didn’t expect to be caught red-handed and was at a loss for a moment.

A glint of murderous intent flashed in Golden Eyes’ eyes as he contemplated silencing the farmer for good. His hand had already reached for the hilt of his sword, but in the next moment, Clara’s voice rang out.

"Father, it’s better to avoid trouble when we can. Don’t we still need to take me to Black Stone City to buy a puppy? Let’s go quickly."

Golden Eyes fell silent for a long while upon hearing this and finally moved his hand away from the sword hilt. He nodded his head, no longer looking at the old farmer, and rode past him.

The farmer, too, breathed a sigh of relief, glanced around, and tucked the wild rabbit into his bosom before hurriedly leaving the woods in another direction.
