Chapter 241: Chapter 89: Old Friends

"I have lived with Black Beauty for over a decade, but it wasn’t until recently that I realized I didn’t understand it at all," Jude said earnestly. "It possesses many virtues, loyalty and selflessness above all. Whenever I faced danger, it was always the first to throw itself into the fray, no matter how powerful the adversary, it never backed down."

"Indeed, dogs are humanity’s most faithful friends," Li Yu said.

"For others, maybe, but to me, Black Beauty is more like a family member. Really, sometimes in the wilderness, when I look into its eyes, I feel like it has so much to say to me, as though it’s about to speak."

"Then you should probably socialize more," the little maid interjected.

"Doctor Adelle said the same thing to me. Anyway, I want to understand Black Beauty’s thoughts more deeply," Jude said. "To carry on its legacy, to live like it... to trust, to protect something precious."

"What is that precious thing?" Li Yu asked.

"The thing that you have established here, although I still can’t fully grasp the doctrines of the Double Rest Sect," the man with the ugly face said. "But I can feel that what you’re doing here is different from those lords on the Continent and the other clerics with their divine babble.

"It’s very... beautiful and fertile, and that usually means it’s coveted by others. That’s why someone like me needs to guard it. I don’t know much else; I can’t farm, nor can I build those tiled-roof houses... but I’m pretty good at chopping people," he added.

Jude thumped his chest as he spoke.

Li Yu hadn’t expected this man, who usually wandered the wilderness accompanied by a black dog, to have a deeper insight into issues than many nobles and their advisers, or perhaps it was more like a kind of primal, keen intuition.

Many, including Ireya, initially thought Li Yu was influenced by the Black Dragon or preparing for the imminent invasion of the winged tribes when they saw him wanting to establish a Knight Order.

That wasn’t necessarily wrong, but Li Yu’s considerations were actually far more long-term than most people imagined.

He came here bearing gifts from another universe, which might not have been obvious at first, but as time went on, more and more people would realize the value of that knowledge and technology.

Li Yu didn’t mind spreading these seeds of civilization, but the premise was that these lords must also accept the precepts of the Double Rest Sect and the faith in Saturday.

This wasn’t just for his own performance evaluation. Li Yu sincerely hoped to make this world a bit better.

He was clear about his role; he wasn’t a thinker or a revolutionary. What those sages had failed to achieve, Li Yu didn’t think he was able to accomplish either.

So from the beginning, he never thought about overturning the world or radically changing the way production was distributed.

He merely hoped to cut a bigger piece of the pie for laborers at the bottom of society, guaranteeing their bare minimum subsistence level. That was the purpose of the Double Rest Sect and was also Li Yu’s personal motive as a worker.

And he knew that even such a small piece of the pie was under constant surveillance, because human greed for benefits is endless, and without a blade in hand, one cannot ward off the jackals.

Then, under a tree, Li Yu personally conducted the initiation ceremony for Jude.

When the grand symphonic version of "What a Beautiful Jasmine" finished playing, Li Yu placed a green silicone bracelet on the ugly-faced man’s wrist.

He also bestowed upon him his church name—George.

This name, originating from the European myth of Saint George the Dragon Slayer, corresponded well with Jude’s own feat of dragon slaying.

The man with the ugly face then knelt on one knee, completing his oath.

When he looked up, he vaguely saw a familiar shadow among the trees, and that shadow was quietly watching him from afar.

Jude felt a surge of joy and was about to call out the name, but in the next moment, the shadow darted away and disappeared into the bushes.

The man with the ugly face wanted to follow, but after standing up, he only took two steps before stopping again.

"What’s wrong?" Li Yu, who was facing away from the shadow, had not seen what had just happened.

"Nothing, just thought I saw an old friend," Jude said with a smile.

His smile contained both reluctance and acceptance.

Then Li Yu, along with the ugly-faced man, found Onund and introduced his new deputy to the head of the Knight Order.

At that moment, Onund was busy watching two squads of lizardmen equipped with Dwarf armor and weapons fighting in the snow.

Since Li Yu had already informed him, he was not surprised by Jude’s addition.

However, some of the lizardmen warriors under his command expressed dissatisfaction and some pointed and looked provocatively at Jude.

Seeing this, Onund yelled, "Has this damned winter frozen your brains too? This man is a Dragon Slayer, a true warrior, and you will obey him just as you obey me."

The lizardmen warriors looked at each other, and then the most robust among them spoke up, "Dragon Slayer, or drunkard? I won’t deny that he was brave in that great battle, but since then, I’ve never seen him use his axe."

"Instead, I often see him stumbling drunk. How can such a man command us?"

His words received substantial agreement from his companions.

Onund frowned, "This is the Prophet’s command. Are you telling me you won’t even listen to the Prophet..."

Jude waved his hand to interrupt him, "There’s no need for trouble. If anyone wants to challenge me, come forward. If I lose, I’ll leave on my own."

"That’s not necessary, but you’ll have to give up your seat to me," the robust lizardman declared confidently.

"Agreed," Jude responded simply.

He had lived on the lands of the Double Rest Sect for a few months now, and had even fought alongside these lizardmen, knowing their temperaments all too well.

These guys worshipped the brave and despised cowards, so gaining their acceptance was easy—just beat them fiercely.

Onund, once a leader among the lizardmen, knew this too and didn’t intervene, though he did worry about Jude losing, so he told the challenging lizardman warrior,

"Tok, take off your armor; George isn’t wearing any, it’s not fair."

"No need, let him wear it. Anyone else who wants to challenge me can come forward," Jude grinned.

His words surprised both Onund and Tok, particularly the latter, who felt underestimated and furious. Without saying another word, he charged forward with his long sword in hand.
