Chapter 224: Chapter 72: Key Testimony
"Sir Caroman, do you still remember me?"
Ireya said to the man opposite her, who had a pair of gray-brown ears and a thin, long beard.
The latter, upon hearing this, timidly raised his head. His bloodshot eyes lingered on the lady’s face for about three or four seconds before he recognized the young girl.
"You are... Ireya, Ruse’s daughter?!"
"Yes, it’s me. You even took me horseback riding on the grass outside Teacup Castle on my eighth birthday."
"My heavens, it really is you! Ireya, were you kidnapped by those villains too?" Caroman widened his eyes, somewhat fearfully observing Thomas who stood beside the lady.
"This is my Guard Captain, Knight Thomas," Ireya introduced simply.
However, upon seeing the yellow weasel crest on the knight’s armor, Caroman looked bewildered again.
"Oh, this armor originally belonged to the Immanuel Family. They gave it to me as a token of thanks for slaying the Black Dragon and avenging their family head. I haven’t had the chance to change the crest yet," the lady explained.
"So it was you who saved me, Ireya!" Caroman, choked with emotion, trembled as he stood up, intending to give Miss Rabbit a big hug, but Thomas stopped him.
Moreover, Caroman also noticed that the young girl subtly took a step back.
The joy of escaping from Acorn Castle rapidly faded, and he sensed an ominous aura.
"Do you know anything about the origins of the people who kidnapped you?" Ireya continued.
Caroman shook his head, "I don’t know. They suddenly appeared while I was out hunting. There were seven of them, all masked. They said nothing and just kidnapped me, even killing my attendant."
"After that, they took me away, and these days, they have been torturing me with all sorts of brutal methods and even cut off my right hand."
As he spoke, Caroman also extended his amputated arm, the empty space above his wrist wrapped with a cloth strip that had been stained brown with serum.
"Then do you know why those people kidnapped you?"
"What else can it be... these desperados are after nothing but money," the owner of Acorn Castle’s gaze flickered.
"And you refused to give them money, even at the cost of your right hand?" Miss Rabbit said, "I didn’t know you held money so dear before."
"They never gave me a choice; they cut off my right hand straight away."
Recalling that nightmarish experience, Caroman painfully closed his eyes, and it took him a while to gradually calm his breathing. He then again expressed his gratitude to the young girl.
"You saved me from those villains, my child, I don’t know how I can ever repay you. Also, I have heard about your successful dragon slaying, a truly impressive feat. Ruse would be proud of you if he were still alive."
He paused, then looked around, "Where are we now, Green Field? They had put me in a wine barrel before, I couldn’t see the scenery outside."
"You are now in Rock Snow City," the lady said indifferently, "Just to remind you, David’s Cavalry is just two streets away."
Upon hearing this, Caroman’s expression instantly stiffened, but he then squeezed out a smile, "Rock Snow City, that’s great. With the Figrola family guards here, we should be very safe."
"I’m indeed very safe, but you might not be."
Sir Caroman gave a dry laugh and feigned ignorance, "I don’t know what you’re talking about, Ireya... Can I leave now? I need to visit the Silver Moon Church for medical treatment for my wounds."
"Feel free." Ireya swiftly stepped aside from the door.
Sir Caroman could hardly believe he was escaping so easily. He tentatively stood up and stumbled toward the door.
However, no sooner had he stepped out than Lady’s voice again rang out from behind him, "You know what will happen if David finds you, right?"
Sir Caroman shuddered.
"Once you leave this inn, David’s spies nearby will spot you immediately. We had quite some trouble bringing you in just now."
Sir Caroman trembled even more after hearing this, and after a moment, he reluctantly withdrew his stepped-out foot and turned to the young lady, "What exactly do you want?"
"An answer."
"Which answer?"
"I have come to know that what happened at Acorn Castle over half a year ago was not an accident, but a premeditated murder. I need you to tell me who instructed you to kill my father."
"I..." Sir Caroman opened his mouth, shivered for a long while, but couldn’t spit out a word.
"Tell me that name."
"If I tell you, will you let me go?" Sir Caroman obviously knew that at this point, there was no point in playing dumb anymore. It might well be that the group who kidnapped him was related to the Arias family.
"No, you killed my father, whom he considered a dear friend. I need to avenge my father."
"Impossible, if you knew his identity, you would know your revenge could never succeed."
"That is my concern," said the Lady.
"What good does it do me to speak? Either way, I’m dead," Sir Caroman said with a grim laugh.
"Speaking out might give you some relief before you die, that is if you feel even a slight bit of guilt for murdering my father."
"......."
Sir Caroman, seemingly crushed by her words, painfully closed his eyes again, covered his face with his remaining hand, and began to sob.
"He forced me. The Figrola Family rules the western realm, and that man is the next heir to the Figrola Family. He only had to move his lips, and others prepared everything. They plotted against Hugo, my only son. I had to do as he said.
"It was the only way to save Hugo. I didn’t want to kill your father; we were friends. But I couldn’t defy David’s orders. I’m terribly sorry...I was too weak..."
Hearing Sir Caroman finally utter that name, Ireya also took a deep breath. She wasn’t filled with much joy, only a feeling of relief as if she was nearing the end of a long journey.
She followed the technique that Li Yu had taught her, pressed the pause button on the recorder, and perfectly captured the entire conversation between them.
Afterwards, she didn’t look back at Sir Caroman, who was kneeling and weeping, walked straight past him, and left the room without turning her head.
