Chapter 737: Chapter 727: Shen Yingxue Comes Looking
After tallying everything up, Shen Yunfang sold two-thirds of the rice, flour, and soybean oil produced from today’s harvest nearby, and still had quite a lot left over.
First, she wanted to provide some benefits for her employees, and second, she was preparing to send a truckload to Dashuan back in her hometown once they were done here; they had long agreed to collaborate, after all.
While everyone was rejoicing over the bumper harvest in the fields, there was more good news from the breeding department: the hens had started to lay eggs.
Thanks to the good rearing environment and proper nutrition, before the year was out, the hens had been laying eggs eagerly, one after another, as if to pay back the long-awaited hopes of the local folks.
A few days later, the egg production stabilized at around 1,600 per day.
Shen Yunfang, along with her staff, got busy and started experimenting with making country-style eggs. In her past life, she had only made tea eggs, so although she knew what ingredients were needed for the brine, the taste was always off due to incorrect seasonings. After many repeated experiments, she finally found a taste that was closest to what she remembered.
Looking at the heaps of eggs behind her, she decided it didn’t have to be the exact flavor from her past life; in this life, she would determine what "country-style" meant.
So, after all the employees had gorged on eggs for more than ten days, the experiments finally stopped. Eggs branded with ’Feiyang’ began to be transported out by the truckload.
Shen Yunfang then resolved to start making wine.
The winemaking recipe she found at the waste collection station, she had been brewing her own whenever there were grains available over the years, and after taste tests by Li Hongjun and his comrades, the feedback was so positive that Shen Yunfang became very confident. That’s why she had the idea to grow her own rice for winemaking.
She had pre-ordered three hundred large jars for storing wine and started making the lees and brewing the wine with her team.
"Sister-in-law, sister-in-law, look, there’s a car coming over." Spotting a black car approaching from the distance on the road, a worker thought another leader might be coming to inspect and hurriedly shouted out loud.
Shen Yunfang straightened up and wiped the sweat from her brow, peering towards the road, indeed a car was coming. However, what she was thinking was, she should ask Zhang Bin to speed up the construction and build up the courtyard wall at the next market. This way, not just anyone could come in; it really isn’t private at all.
When the car stopped at the Drying Yard, Shen Yunfang and her people watched as the rear door opened, and the first thing to emerge was a woman’s foot in high heels. Shen Yunfang frowned and instructed, "Just keep on with what you were doing just now, I’ll go take a look." She took off her gloves, placed them next to the wine jar and walked towards the car.
Before she had even reached the spot, the woman from the car had already gotten out, and now Shen Yunfang knew who the visitor was. She frowned again, puzzled as to how this person had found her here.
"Yunfang, you’re really here." Shen Yingxue stood prettily, speaking in a soft, lovely voice.
"How did you find this place, is there something you need?" Although Shen Yunfang was quite annoyed with the visitor, she still asked politely.
"Hehe, can’t I come to see you if there is nothing urgent, we are old classmates after all." Shen Yingxue spoke with intimate tones and her laugh, like the ring of silver bells, echoed across the Drying Yard.
Shen Yunfang frowned, saying bluntly, "Sorry, but we happen to be in the midst of the autumn harvest. You’re from a farmer’s family too, so you should know this is the busiest time. I really don’t have time to entertain you now. If you don’t have anything else, I think you should head back. When I find some time, I’ll come to see you, and we can catch up then."
Shen Yingxue ignored Shen Yunfang’s cold demeanor and stepped forward, attempting to clasp her arm. Shen Yunfang wouldn’t let her, quickly stepping back to put some distance between them again.
"Ah, look at you, after a few years we don’t see each other, we’ve grown so estranged, how could this be? We’re not just classmates, we’re childhood friends, and even if we’re just fellow villagers from the same place, we should still be closer. We both came from the countryside to make our way in the city, we should know how hard it is, being alone with little to rely on, speaking without confidence, let alone surviving here," Shen Yingxue remarked, rather philosophically.
Shen Yunfang stood her ground, just wrapping her arms around herself to see what else she was going to do.
"Hey, over the years, Yunfang, your temperament has really changed a lot," Shen Yingxue sighed as she looked at the stern-faced Shen Yunfang. "Alright, alright, I’m not here to fool around with you. I actually came today because I really need to talk to you. How about we find a quiet place to have a good chat?"
Shen Yunfang stood there, her eyes sweeping up and down over Shen Yingxue in a thorough scan.
It was November already, and although Z Province was not as cold as their hometown, people had started wearing thin sweaters by this time. But Shen Yingxue was still donning a dress today, only switching from chiffon to wool fabric, a jujube red that was tailored to fit, clinging tightly to her curves, though it had the distinct feature of the era that, in Shen Yunfang’s eyes, ruined the entire aesthetic: the large shoulder pads.
Shen Yingxue was very confident in her figure and clothing, so she stood there calmly letting Shen Yunfang size her up.
"Fine, if there’s something, then follow me," Shen Yunfang decided after looking around to listen to what she had to say. She was very curious about what could bring her back after several months.
Shen Yunfang led Shen Yingxue into the first-floor office and even poured her a cup of boiled water.
"Sorry, no hot water at this hour, can’t make tea, just boiled water, make do with it, will you?"
"No problem, don’t bother, I’m not an outsider," Shen Yingxue responded quite appropriately.
After pouring the water, Shen Yunfang considered herself to have fulfilled the host’s duty and sat comfortably on the couch, waiting for Shen Yingxue across from her to speak up.
Shen Yingxue just touched the water cup to her lips, set it down, and said with a smile, "Who would’ve thought, us country bumpkins born in the countryside, would one day meet in the city like this, what fate."
"Hmm," Shen Yunfang emitted a noncommittal hum through her nose.
"When I first came here, people looked down on me as if I was some dirty thing. I just wouldn’t accept that. They just happened to be born in better circumstances, but when it comes to ability, I’m a high school graduate too; I’m not inferior to anyone else," she went on.
"Hmm."
"Look, I’ve been out here for a few years, haven’t been without my share of hardship and suffering, and finally, fortune favors the diligent, I’ve made it too. I swear, from now on, I want to live a good life like this, having come this far, I’m going to live a life above others." Shen Yingxue’s smiling face faded, replaced by an aura of unattainability that emanated from her.
Good grief, Shen Yunfang slammed her water cup onto the coffee table with a smack, effectively cutting off Shen Yingxue’s haughty rant.
Is she sick in the head, coming here to show off? If she wants to flaunt, why not do it back at her own place? Why embarrass herself here?
"What is it that you want from me? Spit it out, I’m quite busy at work, there’s a ton of stuff waiting for me out there."
