Chapter 568: Extra 5: Ours to Love and Care For, Forever
The news of Charlene being proposed to by Kallix was welcomed well by both sides of the family, including the relatives and friends.
"Congratulations!"
"Wow~ Congrats! Have you thought of the wedding date?"
"We’re so happy for you! You two are a match made in heaven!"
Charlene and Kallix received well wishes from their loved ones to their delight. Realizing that they were blessed by compassionate people in their lives made them happier.
They held a small engagement party, inviting only both sides of the family and close friends. They booked the cafe for a few hours. The owner was delighted to make the arrangement.
During the event, Charlene and Kallix announced that they would hold a wedding this coming autumn. The revelation earned gasps of surprise from some, while others cheered on them.
"In less than a year? Do we have time for everything?"
"Kallix, Charlene, we wish to contribute to your wedding as our gift for you."
"Have you thought of the venue? What’s the size of the wedding? A small or a big one?"
Charlene and Kallix were already prepared with the possible questions coming from their family and friends. She nudged him, letting him answer the guests on both of their behalf.
"Thank you for your good thoughts, everyone. We plan to fund the wedding ourselves and we wish to keep it small and intimate. Still, we’re honored for your good intentions."
A few relatives disagreed with Kallix and Charlene’s decision to hold a small wedding but, their parents quickly shut them up. Mr. Song spoke up first, followed by Mr. Zhu.
"Let the children decide. It’s their wedding, not ours."
"A small wedding is the trend nowadays. If my son and my daughter-in-law want a small wedding, let them be."
Mrs. Song and Mrs. Zhu nodded, showing they stood with their husbands, supporting their children’s decision. The relatives were not satisfied but, they knew not to push their luck.
Thus, Charlene and Kallix began planning for their wedding this coming autumn. Their parents and siblings also helped. Even though they shared their opinions, the end decisions were ultimately on them.
Planning for a wedding was stressful but, the lovebirds didn’t let the pressure take away their joy. They anticipated the day of their wedding to come, surrounded by their loved ones.
Nine months later...
"This wedding is so... perfect. It’s small but, magical."
"I can’t wait to see Charlene and Kallix in their bridal outfits."
"They’re so much in love with each other. Hehe, I wonder when can we see their little one."
The guests chatted happily as they waited for the ceremony to start.
Charlene and Kallix’s autumn wedding was nothing short of magical. It was held in a scenic orchard, surrounded by fiery hues of red, orange and gold of the falling leaves.
The crisp and cool autumn air carried the earthy scent of the leaves and the blooming chrysanthemums. The dazzling sunlight cast dappled shadows through the swaying leaves.
Soon, Kallix appeared, standing on the altar. He looked dashing in his tailored black suit.
The guests sat on the wooden chairs, beneath a canopy of intertwined branches. Twinkling fairy lights were strung from one tree to the next, followed by cascading garlands of autumn flowers.
"Ladies and gentlemen! Here comes our lovely bride!"
The emcee, one of Kallix’s best friends, announced Charlene’s arrival. She was escorted by her father who seemed to hold back from crying.
Stepping down the aisle in an elegant lace gown, Charlene’s veil trailed behind her. She held a bouquet of orange roses and deep crimson dahlias, seemingly carrying the essence of autumn’s beauty.
Once Charlene and Mr. Song arrived at the altar, the middle-aged man handed her hand to Kallix. The young man bowed at his new father-in-law while holding Charlene’s hand, promising to love and care for her.
"You’re breathtaking, my bride," Kallix whispered as he and Charlene stood facing the officiant, his voice low but brimming with emotions.
Charlene’s lips melted into a soft smile. Her eyes glistened with happy tears, and she teased him, "And, you’re a handsome groom yourself."
The ceremony was heartfelt, their vows spoken with sincerity and love. Witnessed by their loved ones, the bride and the groom sealed their vows with a kiss.
Charlene and Kallix flew to the north for their honeymoon. They spent one week touring the famed resort town in the mountains before returning home.
Charlene and Kallix still lived in the same apartment. They had already saved enough to get a house on their own but, they loved the stability and familiarity of living in the town.
Their days together were full of bliss and happiness. Even the action of going grocery shopping together made them so contented.
In the following spring, a revelation surprised Charlene and Kallix.
She was pregnant!
"C-Charlene! My love! Thank you!"
Unable to hold himself back, Kallix embraced Charlene right after she showed him the positive pregnancy test kit. His loveable action earned laughter from her as she returned his hug.
"We will be good parents, right, honey?"
Charlene’s muffled voice received repeated nods from Kallix. Struggling to speak, his voice broke, "Y-yes, we will be good parents... to our child."
Charlene thought she already received blessings for her lifetime but, the way Kallix acted throughout her pregnancy made her wonder how much longer would she be blessed with happiness.
Kallix was far more attentive than usual, often waking up in the middle of the night to satisfy Charlene’s hunger. He also never failed to accompany her for checkups and antenatal classes.
One night, Charlene lay on the bed, huddling with the pregnancy pillow Kallix got her. She couldn’t sleep on her back anymore, the weight of her protruding stomach made her uncomfortable.
"I just hope my life’s blessings won’t end so soon," said Charlene, her voice lacing with laughter.
Kallix chuckled in helplessness, understanding what Charlene meant. He had heard her wondering about all the good things happened in her life before.
Leaning closer to Charlene, Kallix gently stroked her back before rubbing her tummy. A smile graced his lips, imbuing with happiness.
"I believe you’re a good person in your past life so, you have an abundance of blessings this time around."
Her husband’s remarks elicited laughter from her. Somehow, she wondered how far was the truth in his words.
Soon, their bundle of joy arrived, marking her presence known in winter. It was a baby girl.
Despite having a smooth delivery, Charlene was still tired. She lay against the headboard, smilingly watching Kallix cradling their child in his arms.
"My love, seems like our baby wants you now."
"Hehe, come here," Charlene laughed weakly yet, her face glowing with happiness.
Kallix sat on the edge of the bed, returning Charlene’s smile. He gently brushed one side of her head before handing her the little baby wrapped in a soft blanket.
The new parents admired their little one as the child let out a tiny yawn, her delicate fingers curling against Charlene’s chest.
"She’s perfect," Kallix whispered, his voice thick with emotions, "Our Calliope is."
Charlene smiled softly, loving the way their child’s name flowed from Kallix’s mouth. When they stumbled upon that name as they looked for baby names before, both of them immediately fell in love with it.
Calliope, a child with a beautiful voice. Their new heart.
Charlene brushed her thumb across the baby’s cheeks, her heart swelling with pride.
"Our Calliope is indeed perfect. After all, she’s our child."
"Yes. Ours to love and care for, forever."
Kallix and Charlene exchanged a smile. At that moment, their love felt infinite, their hearts fuller than ever before.
