Chapter 566: Extra 3: Their Blossoming Romance
Charlene didn’t intend to complain or whatnot but, she often wondered why her life seemed to flow smoothly for as long as she remembered.
Her parents were a loving pair of husband and wife. They showered affection and warmth to her and two younger siblings.
Even if they made mistakes and not doing very well at school, their parents never hit them or scolded them harshly. Still, they knew when to be strict with her and her siblings.
Their family was not rich yet, her parents often ensured they never went hungry and had decent belongings and a good shelter above their heads.
Charlene also did not have many problems throughout her schooling days, including friendship issues.
She was not exactly a top student or popular among her peers but, her grades were decent enough for her, and her circle of friends was warm and understanding.
The same thing went on as Charlene was in college. She was in a decent relationship with her college mates and the lecturers, also graduating well enough to be proud of herself.
Throughout Charlene’s job search, she only experienced minor heartaches. She was called for interviews over half of her applications and received three job offers within a short time.
After much thinking, Charlene took up the offer at the town where she currently lived. Even though she had to move far from her hometown, it was worth it.
The job was decent with a good salary for a fresh graduate, and Charlene appreciated the good environment in the company.
Charlene also liked the new town. The place was generally safe with decent and many facilities around.
And, now... There was a new wonderful addition to her relatively smooth-flowing life.
She found herself a good man to be in a relationship with.
Kallix was great from the beginning. They did experience their ups and downs but, they tackled the obstacles together instead of going against each other in their disagreements.
Kallix brought Charlene to meet his family three months into their relationship, right when she was ready. His parents lived in the city, just in a different town.
To Charlene’s pleasant surprise, Kallix’s parents and siblings welcomed her well.
"Oh~ I didn’t think our boy here could get a good lady like you. He was quite shy when he was small ah."
"This boy made this old lady worry because he hadn’t brought a girl home to meet us. I feel lucky that I live long enough to witness it."
Charlene’s initial concerns about their first meeting faded easily. Since then, she often followed Kallix to visit her parents’ home, even going there alone when he was outstation.
Not long after Charlene met Kallix’s family for the first time, she brought him to her hometown during her summer vacation, something that delighted her parents.
Charlene’s parents had already known Kallix from the few video and phone calls she made. It was safe to say that Mr. and Mrs. Song agreed with their daughter’s choice.
"This girl can be quite a handful, doesn’t she? Hehe, still, she’s our dear daughter."
"You said you can cook, right? I’ll hand my recipes to you. Some of them are Charlene’s favorites."
Kallix enjoyed the time spent in Charlene’s hometown. Chatting with her parents, swimming and fishing in the river with her younger brothers and going to the hills for a short hike.
One evening when Charlene and Kallix took a stroll to the river near her home...
"I hope I can come here again soon," was what Kallix said as he gently led her to sit on a boulder, laughter slipping out of his lips.
Charlene stared at Kallix, amusement flickering in her eyes before she giggled, "Hehe, Mom and Dad seem to like you so much. They’ll surely nag at me to bring you here frequently."
Sitting on the boulder with their hands linked, Charlene and Kallix exchanged a smile. She liked seeing how the dappled sunlight was cast on his smiling face, so warm and loving.
"Your parents really treasure you, my dear," Kallix tilted his head, leaning closer to Charlene as he spoke, "From the photos on the walls and in the albums, I can tell you have a good childhood."
Indeed, she was. She wouldn’t trade her family for the world.
"Do you think we’ll build a good family too?" asked Charlene, her voice lacing with hope, "Your family is loving too, honey."
Charlene didn’t hesitate to bring up the topic because both she and Kallix had begun talking about their goals for the future. The topics included marriage and having children.
The smile on Kallix’s lips softened as he placed an arm across Charlene’s back, pulling her closer to him. He lightly brushed his lips on her forehead before pulling away, locking their gaze together.
"We will."
His answer was short but, her heart was reassured enough.
Shortly after their first anniversary as a couple, Kallix and Charlene talked about moving in together. After a careful and long discussion, they decided to rent a new apartment instead of living in the ones they currently resided.
Charlene and Kallix found a nice three-bedroom apartment within fifteen minutes walk from their respective workplaces. The residential building was within the newer part of the town.
The initial phase of cohabitation had its own challenges to which Charlene and Kallix tackled them together. At the same time, they were not being particularly rigid with each other.
When Charlene was busy with her work, Kallix picked up the chores more in order not to bother her focus. When he was swamped with deadlines for his projects, she also did the same.
To them, being in a relationship didn’t mean each party had to provide half of everything every single day without fail. Sometimes, they might give more or less than half, depending on the situation.
Charlene and Kallix didn’t want their relationship to be transactional. They nurtured their love with compassion and understanding, hoping to build a strong foundation as their relationship grew to be better.
One winter night soon after their third year of being together, Charlene returned to the apartment alone. Kallix was outstation for an important project.
"I’m sorry, my love. I can’t be with you when it’s our anniversary."
Kallix apologized again and again before he left because he couldn’t be here to celebrate their anniversary. Charlene was sad but, she understood this was inevitable.
Still, Kallix went above and beyond once the day came. He sent a cake and flowers to Charlene’s office and booked a session at her favorite spa, including having their favorite cafe prepare her favorite meals.
As Charlene turned the doorknob, she couldn’t help but miss Kallix more. He said he would return home tomorrow.
But...
"Huh?"
Frozen at the doorway, Charlene’s eyes widened in surprise once she saw what was waiting for her.
Red and white rose petals were scattered on the entryway, with tiny flickering candles in jars lined both sides of the edges.
There was only one person who would do this!
"...Kallix? Honey?"
Charlene quickly closed the door, locking it before stepping on the entryway, her feet grazing the velvety petals. Placing one palm on her chest, she sensed the quickening heartbeat beneath.
There was no response but, she believed he was here!
Charlene wanted to rush further inside but, there was another thing that stopped her from doing that. As she walked down the entryway, her eyes caught something.
A wooden easel stand stood in the hallway leading to the living room, displaying a canvas with a drawing on it.
Standing opposite the easel, Charlene looked at the illustration. She knew this by heart.
The drawing showed a lady and a gentleman, standing inside a train while smiling at each other.
This was their first meeting, brought by fate.
