Chapter 547: The Cabin by the Lake
After checking in, Logan and a staff member transferred the suitcases onto a shuttle cart. The exclusive cabin Calix booked for his family was located further from the front area of the chalet.
The bright red shuttle cart piqued Calliope’s new interest. She eagerly hopped on the open-designed cart once Calix told her so.
Leslie and Calix sat with Calliope in between. The little dumpling turned her body around, gripping the railings. She couldn’t wait for the staff to start driving the cart.
Logan settled on a seat next to the staff. He chuckled at the sight of the happy Calliope. The adorable little dumpling was a star among the bodyguards stationed at the manor.
"Is everyone ready?" the staff asked, his tone joyful. He looked behind his shoulders, glancing at the family of three.
"Ready!" Calliope exclaimed happily, earning laughter from everyone in the cart.
The staff began moving the cart, its quiet hum blending with the rustling bamboo leaves. Behind him, Calliope leaned forward, her eyes wide as she took in the scenery.
"Poppy can feel the wind! Wow~ Bamboo trees are so tall! Mama, Papa, pandas live here?"
Calliope’s question made Calix and Leslie chuckle. The curious little dumpling most likely remembered the cartoon show of a panda with his friends, living in a bamboo forest.
"Not here, my darling," Leslie hugged Calliope from the back, pressing her lips atop the little one’s head, "But, pandas do love bamboo. Maybe we can visit them in a zoo someday."
"Aww! Yay! Can we, Papa?"
Calliope abruptly turned to Calix, her eyes sparkling with little stars inside. Calix shook his head in helplessness, thinking how weak he was with his daughter’s cute face.
"Okay. We’ll go and visit pandas in a zoo later. We can visit his other animal friends too."
Calix’s words were enough to make Calliope squeal in delight. After gushing over the zoo visit to Leslie, the little dumpling continued watching the towering bamboo trees.
The cart turned onto another winding path lined with golden leaves, revealing glimpses of the glimmering lake through the dense bamboo.
They eventually rode on a road with an open view of the lake on the left side. Rows of cabins in different sizes were lined on the right side.
Calix rested his arm on the railing, watching the awe on Calliope’s face and Leslie’s serene smile. Relief flooded his heart as he knew that they were happy with the start of this trip.
Soon, the family closely approached their destination.
They saw a private cabin standing a short distance away from the lake, fallen leaves surrounded the small yard.
The cabin’s rustic wooden exterior blended with nature. More red and gold leaves were stuck on its roof. The nearest cabin to that one was almost one hundred meters away, promising more privacy to the family of three.
"Here we are," announced the staff once he pulled up in front of the cabin, "Your exclusive cabin with a private lake view. Enjoy your stay!"
Calliope excitedly thanked the staff, eliciting laughter from the latter. Logan and the staff helped to move the suitcases inside the cabin before leaving together.
Logan would meet two of his colleagues, who came separately, at the chalet lobby. All three of them stayed in another cabin during the four-day trip.
Leslie still stood in the yard as the cart eventually vanished at an intersection. She took in the surrounding scenery, feeling how serene this place was.
"What are you looking at?"
Calix’s mellow voice came from behind, followed by his pair of strong arms embracing Leslie. Her back leaned on his chest as he hugged her.
Chuckles slipped out of Leslie’s lips. Tilting her chin up, she looked at Calix’s countenance, finding a warm smile carving on his lips.
Sometimes, Leslie saw Axel’s features on Calix’s face, reminding her of their time together in their previous life. One thing was for sure, she loved the smiles on both versions of him.
"Looking at the bamboo, the oaks, the lake and..." Leslie lifted one hand, gently tapping Calix’s chin, "You."
Stifling his laughter, Calix pressed his forehead on the crook of Leslie’s neck. The man’s chest vibrated, being sensed perfectly by her despite the thick layers of the autumn clothes.
"I’m also looking at you, sweetheart."
Calix raised his head, smiling ever softly at Leslie as he whispered those words. The lovebirds exchanged a loving smile, followed by a light kiss.
"We should go inside now," Leslie gestured at the cabin with a tilt of her chin, "Don’t let Poppy turn it into a makeshift jungle gym ah."
"Hahaha! She might."
Hand-in-hand, Calix and Leslie headed toward the cabin. The closer they were, the clearer they listened to Calliope’s footsteps and voice as she ran around the place while cackling in joy.
The cabin had two bedrooms with ensuite washrooms, including a lounge, a kitchen and a side porch. Its whole interior was warm and inviting, a weave of rustic charm and modern comfort.
"Poppy, do you wanna stay in this room?"
Calix called, pointing to a room with a queen-sized bed. From the sliding doors, they could easily see the autumn foliage.
"Poppy want!"
"Okay, then unpack your bag. We’ll go out soon."
"Yay!"
Calix told Calliope to unpack her pink bunny suitcase to which the little dumpling abid. She couldn’t wait to explore the forest and the lake outside.
Leslie had no words to say aside from laughing at Calliope’s antics. She let the little dumpling unpack by herself, knowing her daughter was more than capable of doing so.
"Let’s go to our room," Calix nudged at Leslie, his other hand holding their big suitcase, "I’ve planned everything special for us here."
"Hehe, I can’t wait."
Leslie quickly followed Calix, her eyes darting from here to there as she took in the interior of the room.
Little did she know, her beloved indeed meant his words when he said he planned everything special for their little family.
