Chapter 544: The Late October at the Orphanage

After the banquet, October arrived.

Being the early phase of autumn, the delicate transition gradually happened. A few hints of gold and amber peeked through among the green leaves as the crisp breeze blew past them.

Life was generally peaceful for the family of three. The busiest among them was Calix because he needed to travel abroad twice after the hearty Mid-Autumn Festival.

"Papa, come home soon."

Calliope often bid farewell to Calix with teary eyes. Even though her papa used to go on a work trip before, she still couldn’t get used to it.

"Papa will come home in four days. Poppy just needs four nights of sleep and, Papa will be here, en?"

Calix hugged Calliope as he tried to comfort the little one. Leslie could only watch them with a helpless smile, knowing how sad their daughter was with the short separation.

Fortunately, Calix didn’t go away for too long. Before he left for the second time, he promised to bring them on a trip before the month ended.

To where?

To the orphanage.

As the days passed by, the air cooled further and the transformation quickened.

Calix went for his second business trip in the middle of October when the palette deepened. The green leaves embraced the hues of amber and gold, glowing under the gentle light of the sun.

Even when Calix was away, separated by the miles and time zones, he and Leslie would make sure to talk or at least exchange texts. Calliope often asked to video call her papa but, only when the man was free.

Leslie also would join the bodyguards sending Calliope to kindergarten, replacing Calix. In the early afternoon, she would pick the little dumpling up.

On two separate occasions, Leslie asked Logan to drop by a cafe and an ice cream shop. Calliope enjoyed spending some time there before they returned home.

When Calix ended his business trip, Calliope happily told him about her eating pastries and ice cream with Leslie.

By late October, autumn finally reached its apex. Vibrant reds and golds dominated the landscape, blanketing parks in a breathtaking sea of color.

Such scenery welcomed Calix, Leslie and Calliope when they arrived at Frostwich Town, heading to Harmony Haven Orphanage. Director Li and the others had already known of their visit.

"Ohhh! Mama, Papa, look!"

Calliope stretched her neck out, her head pressing against the car windows once she saw the familiar compound of the orphanage. The afternoon sun shone brightly in the sky.

The peeling paints of the gate were no more, replaced by a vibrant orange color with colorful doodles on the surface. The surrounding trees had changed colors, their red leaves fluttering as the breeze blew.

"Mr. Xu and Mrs. Xu, welcome. Poppy, it’s good to see you!"

Director Li and the children eagerly welcomed the arrival of the family of three. The little turnip heads gathered around the middle-aged lady, happy to meet their friend once again.

"Granny! Poppy miss Granny so so much!"

Once Calliope emerged from the car, she jumped toward Director Li, clinging to the woman’s legs. The orphanage director laughed as she patted the little dumpling’s head.

Even though they had never missed having at least one call every week, Director Li indeed missed Calliope. After all, she had been watching the little one growing up since infancy.

"How have you been, Poppy? Aww~ You look healthier ah."

Director Li noted how glowing Calliope’s chubby cheeks were, including her overall complexion. It was clear how well the little girl was being pampered by her parents.

The rest of the children in the orphanage also were better in health than before. They got to have a fulfilling, excellent diet due to the constant ongoing funding from Xu International.

"Granny! Poppy is so healthy ah. Poppy has no cold or runny nose. Hehe~"

Calliope bounced on her toes, her twin pigtails tousled by her movement. Her little heart couldn’t contain the joy of meeting her old guardian and friends.

"Poppy, we miss you~"

"Poppy, let’s go and play ah."

"Aww~ Your pink bag is cute!"

Soon, Calliope rushed to greet her friends. Some of them were not there anymore, adopted by their new families.

When the little turnip heads gathered together, busy chattering with each other, Director Li exchanged greetings with Leslie and Calix.

"Hello, Mr. and Mrs. Xu. We’re glad to have you here again."

Calix and Leslie smiled at Director Li, nodding lightly at the older lady.

"Thank you for having us here, Director Li."

"It has been months. Thankfully, everyone looks great."

After exchanging pleasantries, Director Li invited Leslie and Calix to the new building, alongside Calliope and the other children. The old one was already barricaded for the renovation works.

"Poppy! Come and see our new rooms!"

"We got new beds! So cute!"

"Poppy, let’s go and play! We have a new TV too!"

The children quickly urged Calliope to follow them to the new building, eager to show the whole place to the little dumpling. All of them loved everything about the new building.

"Seems like the little ones are the most excited," Calix exclaimed, receiving laughter from Leslie.

The little turnip heads led Calliope, Calix and Leslie to the new building, located further inside the orphanage. Director Li walked alongside the couple while sharing some stories with them.

The two-story building stood in the middle of the backyard, painted in the color cream with colorful doodles. The children still shared rooms but, they were more spacious with better facilities.

"Wow~"

Calliope ran into her friends’ shared room, mesmerized by the beige-colored bunk beds with built-in cabinets and curtains. Four similar study tables were put facing the windows.

"Poppy, come up here," called one of the children, pointing at the bunk bed, "Here! Here!"

"Okay~"

Calix and Leslie simply watched Calliope from outside the room, letting their daughter have fun with her friends. Exchanging a smile with one another, they followed Director Li to look at other areas.

The children’s heart laughter and chatter eventually faded as they left the corridor.
