Chapter 420: He Felt the Opposite in Those Dreams

Calix was still panicky even after seeing Leslie laughing softly. Her orbs were still glazed with tears. He gently rubbed his thumb under her eyes, feeling the warmth of the crystal droplets.

"You cry yet, you also laugh?"

Calix’s helpless voice earned more chuckles from Leslie. She shrugged, showing she also didn’t understand herself.

"Hehe, sorry... I seem weird now, en?"

Calix smiled sheepishly, "My story is weirder."

Leslie and Calix huddled on the swing chair. No one said anything as they took this time to calm themselves. He traced lazy circles on her shoulder as he wrapped her in his arms.

The passing night breeze gently caressed their face and tousled their hair. Its coolness helped to alleviate the lingering tension. The subtle scent of floral sweetness lingered in the air.

’Oh, I forgot.’

Leslie shifted her eyes to the inside of Calix’s home office. She could see the coffee table from the bamboo swing chair she was sitting on now. The laminated papers of the face sketches entered her line of sight.

"Those portraits..." Leslie trailed off as her eyes returned to Calix’s face, "Did you get someone to draw them because of your dreams?"

Calix hadn’t told Leslie everything about how those face sketches came to reality but, she could roughly guess. Those dreams affected him enough that he might try looking for the couple in real life.

"Yeah," Calix nodded once, his eyes on Leslie’s intrigued countenance, "An artist did those sketches. They’re slightly off from my memories tho."

Leslie hummed softly, inwardly agreeing with Calix. The artist was talented enough to sketch the faces based on Calix’s descriptions and facial references of real people.

"Are you trying to look for them?" asked Leslie, verbalizing what she had in mind. Her chin tilted slightly as she continued looking at Calix.

"You’re right. But, no luck so far. I’ve never heard of the city they lived in."

Leslie blinked. She hadn’t heard anything about this from Calix. He only mentioned the couple lived in an old apartment.

"...you knew where they lived? I mean, you learned the city’s name?"

Calix nodded before saying a name, including the town where the couple resided. Leslie flinched at the sound of the very familiar names.

Yes... Those were where she used to live with her first lover, Axel before.

"We never have this city in our country, en?" Calix sighed softly, "It’s supposed to be a big one too."

"...yeah."

A hint of guilt flickered in Leslie’s eyes. Hearing those names again reminded her of her distant previous life – both the joyful and sad days.

Including... the day she and her daughter breathed their last.

Tearing her eyes away from Calix’s face, Leslie quietly uttered, "...what if you’d never find them? And, those places too."

Leslie’s question earned a sigh from Calix. Wrapping his arms tight around her frame, he pulled her closer to him.

With her face nestling on his broad chest, Leslie quietly listened to the pounding of Calix’s heart. It sounded a little erratic, perhaps related to his complicated feelings now.

"I’m not sure either. Well, I don’t want to say this but... I think I won’t ever find the couple. But, I still wanna know why I suddenly dreamed of them, really. And why I’ll dream of them only when our family sleeps together. All three of us."

Calix’s mellow voice echoed above Leslie’s head. Catching the slight strain in his voice, more guilt weighed her heart.

’Enough. This should be enough for tonight. But...’

Leslie bit her lower lip. She wanted to clarify another matter before telling Calix to go to bed. She hadn’t forgotten his early flight tomorrow morning.

Pulling herself away from Calix, Leslie stared at his face. Despite still carrying a little tension, he looked better than before as if relief washed over most of his worries. His gaze on her brimmed with affection as always.

She shouldn’t be afraid of anything. She knew she could be open with this man.

Pushing beyond her doubt, Leslie asked, "Calix, you said you felt familiar with them, en? What else did you think or feel?"

Peace and familiarity.

Those feelings came to Calix amid his witnessing and experiencing the life between the man and the woman.

Leslie wanted to know if those emotions immediately came to Calix or if something else influenced him. She also wondered if he had other thoughts about them.

"About that..."

Calix slightly frowned as his mind recalled his previous thinking. Leslie’s question reminded him of the days he unconsciously linked those dreams with what happened to him in the past.

"Leslie, do you remember when I told you about my accident before?[01] After we stayed at my family’s ancestral home."

Leslie’s heart skipped a beat. She believed she knew which issue Calix was referring to.

Her lips trembling, Leslie whispered, "...about how sometimes you feel strange in your own body? That one?"

"Yes."

"W-what about it?"

Calix took a brief pause to gather his thoughts. His eyes drifted from the inside of the home office before returning to Leslie’s face. The suppressed panic in her gaze worried him.

Lifting one hand, Calix gently rubbed one side of Leslie’s face. His lips carried a smile as he saw her countenance softening. He brought his hand down.

"Strangely, I felt the opposite when I was in the dreams. Even if you ask me now, I’ll say I feel at ease and... in sync with the unknown man."

Calix was unsure which was the best way to describe his feelings about this issue. Despite wanting to elaborate more to make Leslie understand better, he still had difficulty with his explanation.

"I’m not talking about the coincidences. It’s just... for some reason, I think as if... I was him."

Calix’s voice grew quiet at the end of his last sentence. He didn’t know once again Leslie’s heart suspended before it beat again.

’Yes. This is enough. This is... what I wanted to hear.’

Calix was Axel.

Leslie was certain about it.

Whether Axel’s soul occupied Calix’s body the same she took over Charlene’s or not, Leslie was not entirely sure yet. She also wondered what happened to the original Calix.

The only one who could answer her was Mimo.
