Chapter 415: The Redness in Her Eyes
Current time.
The slight strain in Calix’s heart eased as soon as his eyes landed on the manor backlit by the setting sun. The place he had resided in for a few years seemed more welcoming than before.
After all, Calix perked up at the idea of seeing Leslie and Calliope after a long and busy day at work.
A chuckle escaped Calix’s lips as he wondered what his wife and daughter were doing. He didn’t worry much about Leslie but, the little Calliope could be naughty from time to time.
Slowing down the car on the long driveway, Logan finally pulled up under the roof of the front porch. Calix immediately unbuckled the seatbelt, ready to get out of the vehicle.
"Boss, I’ll be here before six tomorrow," said Logan when Calix opened the door. He referred to being his boss’ driver early in the morning.
"Yes. There’s no changes so far."
"Roger."
Calix was scheduled to depart around seven in the morning tomorrow. He should land at three in the afternoon Switzerland time. Time in China should be around nine in the evening.
The fourteen-hour direct flight would indeed be a long and exhausting one.
Striding inside the manor, Calix changed from leather shoes to home slippers. He walked down the entry to the hallway. The entire manor was already basked under bright lights.
"Mr. Calix, welcome home," Aunt Wendy poked her head out of the kitchen. She swiftly added before the man could ask her, "Mrs. Leslie and Miss Poppy are upstairs. Dinner will be served soon."
The clock pointed to seven in the evening, the perfect time for dinner. Alluring scents traveled out of the kitchen, telling Calix that Aunt Wendy had cooked another delicious feast.
"Thank you, Aunt Wendy."
Calix returned the smile. He hurriedly rushed to the second floor. His destination was Calliope and Leslie’s bedrooms before heading to his.
Unfortunately, he couldn’t see them yet. His wife and his daughter were inside their respective washrooms.
"I better shower too."
Calix didn’t shower for too long but, it was enough to make him feel refreshed. After changing into a set of pajamas and drying his damp hair, he hurried out of his bedroom.
"Papa~ You’re back!"
Calliope had just left her princess bedroom when she saw Calix walking away from his. The little one was dressed in pink frilly pajamas. Her chubby arms held the toy Mimo close to her small frame.
Laughing softly, Calix picked Calliope from the floor. He smiled fondly at his daughter, "I’m home, my buttercup. Did you have fun today?"
"Hehe~ Poppy play a lot ah. Haha! Papa, that tickle!"
Calliope cackled when Calix started to shower her round face with little kisses. Her milky laughter echoed in the quiet hallway.
"Let’s go and get your mama."
"Okay!"
Crossing the hallway, Calix carried Calliope to Leslie’s bedroom. The little one couldn’t resist narrating her activities today to her papa. He smilingly listened to her while asking questions.
Knock! Knock!
"Mama~ Poppy and Papa here!"
Calliope merrily announced their arrival as soon as she and Calix entered the bedroom. They spotted Mrs. Su first. The private nurse was arranging the books scattered on the bedside table.
"Is my wife still bathing?" asked Calix. His eyes darted from Mrs. Su to the closed door of the washroom.
"Mrs. Xu is in the wadrdobe. She’s brushing her hair, I think," replied Mrs. Su with a smile. She gestured at the walk-in closet, "You may head inside, Mr. Xu."
Knowing it was safe for him to enter the walk-in wardrobe, Calix brought Calliope along. Mrs. Su left the room once she finished tidying up the bedside table.
"My wife~"
The cheery Calix didn’t notice Leslie flinched at the echo of his voice. She paused from combing her long hair. Blinking, she turned her head from the vanity mirror to the entry.
Oh... She didn’t notice they had come here.
"You’re back, Calix. Welcome home."
"I wanted to see you earlier but, you’re bathing," Calix chuckled while lowering Calliope to the floor, "Want me to braid your hair?"
"...sure."
Calix walked closer to Leslie, stopping right behind her. He took the brush from her hand before brushing through her luscious locks.
Calliope walked around the wardrobe, still hugging Mimo. She loved seeing the beautiful clothes hung on every rack.
"How were your sessions today? Are you tired?"
Calix’s mellow voice echoed behind Leslie, unknowingly stirring emotions in her heart. His eyes focused on her hair while hers fell into his reflection in the mirror.
Pursing her lips, Leslie quietly clasped her hands together. She was glad to see the swelling in her eyes had lessened. The redness also receded.
Fortunately, the turbulent storms within her had calmed down, leaving the lingering marks.
"I didn’t do much today. Ms. Yao and Ms. Chen told me to take it easy. Our previous sessions were heavy."
Calix’s lips curled into a smile before laughter slipped out, "You knew Edward has returned to work, en? I think he wanna be a mountain dweller ah. To live far away from other humans."
Calix’s story amused Leslie. Smiling in helplessness, she asked, "Did he meet a jungle lady or something?"
"Well, he..."
Calix continued telling stories about Edward and his day in general while braiding Leslie’s hair. His chattiness and the gentle way he tended to her helped to further ease her concerns.
"All done! It’s dinner time!"
"Thank you."
Calix watched Leslie standing up from the vanity chair, be prepared to catch her if she stumbled or her legs weakened. She slowly walked to the wheelchair.
"Poppy, let’s go downstairs," Leslie beckoned at Calliope to come closer. The little one was admiring a drawing hung on the wall, "Aren’t you hungry?"
"Hehe, hungry~"
Calix shook his head, thinking how inseparable Calliope and food were. He glanced at Leslie, only to be stunned for a second.
"...Leslie. Your eyes are red."
"Huh?"
Frowning, Calix bent his upper body to look closer at Leslie. He gently gripped her chin, locking her eyes with his.
"I didn’t notice this. Your eyes look a bit swollen too. Did something happen?"
Calix recalled he hadn’t faced Leslie properly from the time he entered the walk-in wardrobe. It must be the reason he missed seeing the redness in her eyes, including their puffiness.
Leslie’s heartbeat sped up. She quickly smoothened her stiff countenance.
Lifting one arm, Leslie softly tapped a finger on Calix’s left cheek, her lips smiling, "Dust got into my eyes and I slept too much today. Hehe, it’s nothing to worry about ah."
"Still hurting? Do you need eyedrop?"
Calix peered into Leslie’s eyes. He didn’t know why he felt uncomfortable seeing the redness. Her reasons also sounded off to him.
"It’s fine already. Come, let’s have dinner. Poppy is hungry."
"En! Poppy is hungry!"
Having no other choice, Calix dropped the subject, "Alright. Let’s go."
Leslie smiled, inwardly feeling relieved. She was reminded of her mission, one she built because of the sudden surprise she uncovered earlier today.
When they were alone tonight... she would ask him about the portraits.
She had to know why she found her old face and her deceased first lover’s face drawn on the papers.
Where did he get them?
And...
