Chapter 398: Did She Think His Plan Was Tacky?

"Haaa..."

Letting out a long and heavy sigh, Leslie nuzzled into Calix’s chest. She caught the pleasant sound of his chuckles while sensing him wrapping his arms around her frame.

Calix stared at Leslie who was half-lying in the backseat of the executive van. The seat belt extended far from the side because of her posture.

The vehicle had just left the close vicinity of the Thai restaurant. Logan was quietly driving in the front.

Earlier, Calix and Leslie clearly heard screams and cries coming from the private dining room when the door was opened again. Geoffrey’s furious figure appeared, followed by an enraged Old Madam Li.

The entitled mother and daughter tried to force Calix and Leslie to get back inside but, Calix’s bodyguards managed to stop them. Thankfully, the commotion didn’t last long nor did it attract the patrons’ attention.

"Tired?" whispered Calix. Raising one hand, he ran his fingers through Leslie’s silky hair. The red hairpins glimmered in the dimness, "Good job, Leslie. You’ve done very well."

Leslie laughed softly. She enjoyed the feeling of Calix stroking her head. The gesture helped to comfort her after such an intense atmosphere involving the Li family.

"Thank you~ A bit tired but, I’m fine... I’m glad it’s over."

Calix’s praise brought up a sense of pride in Leslie. She was genuinely glad because the confrontation ended well on her side.

The Li family was desperate to continue talking with her but, Leslie didn’t care about them. She didn’t owe them a proper explanation nor did they deserve it.

Mr. Wei might have started his tasks by facing the Li family. Calix left a bodyguard behind to accompany the experienced attorney.

Even though the Li family most likely wouldn’t pull a stupid stunt in public, the bodyguard’s presence would reinforce the idea Calix had just buried in their minds.

About how the Li family had unknowingly made the Xu family their archenemy for being inhumane.

Tilting up her chin, Leslie looked at Calix. Her eyes lingered on his face as thoughts swirled in her mind. The passing lights of the street lampposts shone on his smiling countenance.

Out of concern and curiosity, Leslie asked, "Calix, is it okay to leave everything with Mr. Wei? What will... he do next?"

Leslie was not sure how one could officially sever ties with her maiden family. Despite simply leaving that matter to Calix and his legal team, she couldn’t help but wonder about the process.

Calix recalled the tasks Mr. Wei was being entrusted with. He tried using simpler terms when explaining it to Leslie.

"He’ll detail the mistreatments and neglect they had done on you. About taking your name out of your family registry. Even though we’re married, you’re still listed as their daughter. Well, Mr. Wei will subtly threaten them. They’ll lose a lot more if they try to argue."

Leslie understood this was not a simple process. The Li family was too prideful to admit defeat despite risking offending the Xu family.

"Well, they’ll be busy dealing with the bureau soon, won’t they?"

Leslie was aware of the Xu family’s hidden plan to report every fraud committed by the Li family to the government bureau. Geoffrey and Rowan would be busy facing the officers, leaving them no free time to chase after the Xu family.

"Yes. Dad will handle that part. We can forget about them."

Leslie slowly pulled herself back from Calix, sitting in the seat with her back on the cushion. He noticed the slight change in her expression. She looked troubled by something.

"What’s wrong, Leslie?"

Sighing, Leslie admitted, "Oh... I’m just worried about Irene."

Irene had been reassuring Leslie that she wholeheartedly supported the latter’s plan. But, the teenager would undoubtedly be dragged into the coming mess.

Understanding what Leslie meant, Calix softened his smile. He quietly asked, "You’re worried about her being bullied at school? Things like that?"

"...yes."

Irene was friendly with lots of students at her high school. But, Leslie was afraid the teenager’s situation would change following the downfall of the Li family.

Blossom Jade High was mostly attended by the children of the elites. Leslie couldn’t help but worry if those students would start to ostracize Irene despite the latter continuously saying she would be alright.

"No need to worry ah," Calix chuckled. Reaching out for one of Leslie’s hands, he gave her a squeeze of reassurance, "Actually, I’ve personally talked to the school principal in advance."

"Oh? About what?"

Under Leslie’s curious gaze, Calix explained what he had arranged beforehand. Whether such a situation arose in Irene’s school or not, his plan would still proceed.

"The teenagers will just act like their parents or grandparents, either all or only half of them. They might distance themselves from Irene once they hear about the Li family’s problems."

Leslie refrained from sighing. Calix’s words made sense. It was a reason why she was worried about Irene being shunned or bullied by her schoolmates.

"The school has a charity program for schools in undeveloped areas. I’ll donate under Irene’s name but, it’ll be known it actually comes from me, her brother-in-law."

Calix wanted the entire school to know the Xu family was in a good relationship with Irene. The students might think his family was on good terms with the Li as well but, he didn’t care about it.

After all, the adults would know the truth from the news soon. The Xu family wouldn’t offer any assistance to the Li family. They were no longer in-laws because Leslie had cut them off officially.

Leslie blinked. She blankly stared at Calix as those words sank into her mind. Her reaction caught his attention.

"...Leslie, what’s wrong?"

Did she think his plan was too tacky?

Snapping out of her trance, Leslie’s eyes regained their focus. When laughter escaped her lips, Calix’s confusion grew deeper.

"Hehe, I just think... wow! Even the students’ politics are like the adults’! They won’t trust Irene even if she says she’s close to us... but, they have no choice but to believe once you pull this stunt!"

Calix guffawed at Leslie’s remarks. His laughter echoed clearly in the van.

"Hahaha! I thought you’d disagree with my plan ah."

"I won’t. It’s better than nothing..."

Even though Calix’s primary intention was to help Irene, the program would reap benefits from his action thus, Leslie didn’t mind it at all.

"Aiya, I miss our daughter ah..." Leslie chuckled as she was reminded of Calliope, "I wonder what’s she doing."

"Most likely chat with Aunt Wendy. Our daughter talks so much ah."

Leslie rolled her eyes. She playfully chided Calix, "Don’t you think she inherits it from you?"

"Of course! I’m her papa," replied Calix without shame, "I only have good qualities, don’t you think?"

"...pff!"

Calix and Leslie collectively looked at the front, wondering who almost chortled earlier. Logan suddenly coughed, obviously trying to mask his sudden laughter earlier.

"Are you laughing at me?" Calix narrowed his eyes.

Logan calmly responded, "No, Boss. My throat is itchy ah."

Calix clicked his tongue, "Should I shove cough syrup in your throat?"

"No, Boss. My hands work perfectly for that."

"..."

"Hahaha!"

Leslie covered her mouth, amused by Logan’s attempt to save himself from Calix’s irritation.
