Chapter 395: Straying From the Actual Path
"Good evening, Second Young Master Xu and Second Young Madam Xu."
Stepping further inside, Mr. Wei politely greeted Calix and Leslie. His demeanor was calm in the midst of the strained atmosphere of the private dining room.
"Thank you for making your way here tonight, Mr. Wei," Calix returned the greeting. Standing on his feet, he gestured to the vacant seat next to him, "Come and sit here, Mr. Wei."
"It’s my honor to offer you my assistance, Second Young Master Xu."
Mr. Wei steadily approached Calix. Old Madam Li, Rowan and Geoffrey’s eyes followed the middle-aged man’s movements. Deena, Gladys and Irene also did the same.
Snapping out of her shock, Old Madam Li barked, "Charlene, Calix, what are you two scheming?"
"Y-yes, Charlene, Calix... What do you mean by... cutting off ties with us?"
Stuttering out of fright, Rowan anxiously demanded an explanation from Leslie and Calix. Bianca also wore the same expression as her husband before realization dawned on her.
"Charlene... are you being serious? Y-you’re not... aren’t you?"
Bianca suddenly recalled the day she and Rowan met Leslie before the Dragon Boat Festival[01]. More specifically, she remembered the lady’s last words before she and her husband left.
"You know what? I’ve always wanted... to leave but, I didn’t have the courage... You can’t stop me now..."
Blood drained from Bianca’s face, she desperately pleaded, "P-please! Please don’t cut us off, Charlene! We’re really sorry! We apologize... for all the pain we have caused you..."
Irene lowered her face upon hearing Bianca’s pitiful pleas. Even though she supported Leslie’s decision to cut the whole family off but, she still felt sorry for her parents.
Understanding what his wife meant, Rowan hastily stood up from his seat. He nervously begged, his eyes teary.
"Charlene, please! We’ll make it right for you! P-please! Don’t cut us off!"
Rowan and Bianca’s cries did nothing to melt the frost in Leslie’s eyes. Calix was talking to Mr. Wei in a low voice but, he still kept his eyes on the husband and wife.
The way Rowan and Bianca acted confused Old Madam Li, Geoffrey and Deena further. Gladys widened her eyes as thoughts spiraled in her mind.
"Charlene! Explain! Rowan! Bianca!" Old Madam Li spat, her voice quavering with rage, "What are you talking about?! You knew about this?"
"Elder Brother, do you know something?" Geoffrey butted in, throwing daggers at Rowan through his irritated eyes, "What’s your daughter trying to do? To stir trouble?"
The dining room erupted into chaos with continuous cries and shouts. The current situation was far less than suitable for a leisure dining.
Despite everything, Leslie and Calix’s composure remained solid. They had already expected such a strong reaction.
"I’m officially cutting ties with all of you," Leslie spoke loud and clear. Her chilly gaze was locked into Old Madam Li’s smoldering eyes, "From tonight, I’m no longer one of the Lis."
Bam!
"How dare you! Who are you to disrespect us?!"
Old Madam Li slammed her palm hard on the table, sending vibrations in its wake. The blaring echo of her voice stunned everyone in the room – except for Leslie and Calix.
Scoffing, Leslie drew her red-painted lips into a sneer, "Do you deserve respect, Old Madam Li? You’ve done nothing to earn it from me."
Old Madam Li hitched a breath, enraged with Leslie’s response. Fury blazed in her enlarged eyes as veins protruded on her forehead. She looked as if she would devour the young lady if a chance arose.
"C-Charlene! How disgraceful! How could you talk to your grandmother like that?" Deena hurriedly chided Leslie. She anxiously looked from the lady in red to her elderly mother-in-law, "Even if you’re upset about something, this isn’t how..."
"Shut up," Leslie glared at Deena, her gaze showing no mercy, "Don’t speak another word."
"Y-you! How could..."
"You look better when you’re not spouting nonsense."
"...?!"
Deena’s widened eyes stared at Leslie in disbelief. She had never seen such behavior from her eldest niece-in-law all this time. The latter was always a timid and quiet woman.
Did she get possessed by something?!
"Pff!"
Calix covered his mouth. He tried very hard not to laugh when everyone else was stunned and upset by Leslie’s actions. Pride glimmered in his eyes as he looked at his wife.
Indeed. She was a vibrant fire goddess tonight.
"My decision is final," Leslie swept her fiery gaze around the dining room, her tone remaining firm, "I won’t tolerate any mistreatment from all of you anymore... I’ve had enough."
Mimo used to tell Leslie how Charlene would forgive her parents and the Li family if the lady followed the original storyline of the book. But, Leslie refused to go down that path.
Leslie had no emotional attachments to the Li family despite living as Charlene in this world. She also had no thoughts to maintain this toxic familial relationship.
Breaking off all ties possible with the Li family was the better choice.
If the Li family was decent and cherished Charlene, Leslie might form a relationship with them. But the truth was far from it.
"Hah! Do you think you’re high and mighty just because he married you? Don’t come crawling once he discards you!"
Old Madam Li barked, her blood reaching its boiling point. She believed nothing in Leslie and Calix’s claim about how they used to be lovers years ago.
Calix clenched his jaw. Old Madam Li’s last sentence erased the smile from his face. Despite knowing the old hag was just trying to pressure Leslie, he was still terribly upset.
Parting his lips, Calix’s irritated tone rang in the air. The malice in his eyes was enough to kill one’s soul.
"My wife has more wealth than you’ve expected. Half of my assets already go to her. Make sure you’re not the one come crawling to her later."
The Li family had yet to know the incoming doom they were forced to face soon.
They didn’t have the rights begging for mercy as they had themselves to blame.
