Chapter 362: Behind Her Elder Sister’s Exile Six Years Ago
"Irene, sit down first."
Calix’s voice broke into Irene’s stupor. Blinking, she confusedly stared at Leslie and the little girl before her eyes drifted to her brother-in-law. Her hands on the bag’s strap loosened.
"Big Brother, Big Sister, what are..."
Before Irene could finish her question, a milky voice cut her off.
"Auntie, come and sit. Poppy wanna know Auntie," said Calliope while pointing to a couch opposite the one she sat with Leslie.
Irene stiffly turned her gaze from Calix to the little girl who called herself Poppy. Still standing near the lounge’s entrance, countless questions muddled her brain.
Who was this little girl?
Shouldn’t she be around five or six years old?
Why did her sister introduce the girl as her niece?
Why did her brother-in-law mention the girl as his and her sister’s biological child?
What was going on?!
Shaking her head, Irene swore she felt as if hot steam puffing out of her ears. Her bangs lightly brushed her forehead, following her movements. Clapping her cheeks once, she returned her eyes to Leslie.
"Big Sister, did you and Big Brother..."
Had just adopted a child?
Irene abruptly stopped herself before she completed her words. Glancing at the adorable little girl with twin pigtails, she felt bad if she continued saying her piece.
Leslie pursed her lips, trying to hold back laughing from Irene’s antics due to her confusion. Exchanging a glance with Calix, she knew he also thought of the same thing.
"What are you imagining, huh?" Calix approached Irene. He patted her shoulder twice, "Stop standing here. Your sister has many things to talk about with you ah."
"...okay."
Irene scurried to the single couch placed opposite the one occupied by Leslie and Calliope. Calix sat next to the little one. Extending a hand, he rested one palm just behind Leslie.
Sighing inwardly, Leslie prepared herself for what she would tell Irene next. She looked at Calliope. The little dumpling’s eyes were directly staring at Irene.
"Irene, we understand this will shock you but... Calliope here is indeed our biological child... Your brother-in-law and I’s daughter..."
Leslie gently touched Calliope’s shoulders. The little one tilted up her chin to look at her, presenting Leslie with a cute smile.
Irene blinked, still having difficulty taking in her elder sister’s words. Without responding to Leslie with anything, she kept glancing at her elder sister, her brother-in-law and the little one named Calliope.
Now that she looked at them sitting side by side, she saw the girl shared some resemblances with the husband and wife ah.
But...
Her sister and her brother-in-law had just gotten married a few months ago!
How could they already have a kindergarten-aged child?
"Big Sister, I don’t understand," Irene clutched her hands together. Her eyes suddenly glossed over, "Did we skip a few years already? Did we last meet a few years ago?"
Irene’s unbelievable words stunned Leslie while Calix threw his head back, laughing out loud. His eruption of laughter bounced off the walls, chasing away the slight tension in the air.
"Hey! No ah! You and your sister met last month, remember?" Calix shook his head, thinking how funny his younger sister-in-law could be, "Calm down ah. Let your sister tell you everything."
"Big Brother! Don’t laugh at me!"
Ashamed, Irene’s cheeks flushed in a faint red color. She stared angrily at Calix who continued laughing. Leslie could only watch them with a helpless gaze.
"Anyway, I want to introduce you to... Calliope here..." Leslie diverted Irene’s attention from Calix’s teasing. Looking down at Calliope, she smiled, "Poppy, this is Mama’s younger sister... Her name is Irene..."
"Irene?" Calliope repeated the name. Peeling her round eyes away from Leslie, she looked at Irene next, "Mama’s younger sister?"
"Hehe, yes," Leslie squeezed one of Calliope’s tiny shoulders, "Wanna introduce yourself to... your new aunt, Poppy?"
"Poppy want!"
Sliding down from the couch, Calliope smilingly approached the baffled Irene. The little one stopped two feet away from the teenager.
Two pairs of eyes—one of excitement and the other one of confusion—stared at each other.
Calliope flashed her brightest grin. Clasping her little hands together, she bowed in front of Irene.
"Hello, Little Auntie Irene. My name is Calliope. You can call me Poppy."
Calliope’s eloquence further perplexed Irene. Looking at the adorable little girl wide-eyed, no words came out of her mouth despite attempting to speak.
Leslie shifted her eyes from Calliope and Irene, looking at Calix. The man had already placed his gaze on her.
"Seems like Irene is too shocked... I should talk to her now..."
Calix clearly heard the concern imbuing Leslie’s voice. Nodding, he replied quietly, "I’ll take Poppy out with me."
"Thank you, Calix..."
Calix reached out for Leslie’s left hand, giving her a squeeze of reassurance. Standing up from the couch, he casually approached Calliope and Irene.
"Poppy, wanna help Papa cook for our picnic?" Calix put one hand on his hips as he bent down slightly to look at Calliope, "You can wear your pink apron ah."
"Oh~ Okay!"
Calliope placed her little hand in one of Calix’s broad palms. Waving at Leslie and Irene, she happily said, "Mama, Little Auntie, bye-bye~ Poppy will help Papa."
"Be careful, Poppy..." Leslie returned her daughter’s hand-waving, "Listen to Papa, en?"
"Okay~"
Calliope deng deng deng walked away from the lounge with Calix. Irene’s eyes kept darting from the little girl to Leslie, her eyes almost popping out of her sockets.
"Irene, do you wanna know why... Calliope is our biological child?"
Leslie’s question froze Irene’s focus on her elder sister. Nodding, she quickly said, "I want to know. How do you and my brother-in-law... have a child this big already?"
Leslie softened her smile. She inwardly embraced this moment of truth, knowing she had to continue exposing the rotten insides of the Li family to Irene.
"Irene, do you remember when... I was exiled from our home... around six years ago?"
Stunned, Irene inevitably jogged her memories once she heard Leslie’s question.
"...I remember."
How could she not?
Out of nowhere, their grandmother ordered her elder sister to be banished from this city.
Despite being a young child, Irene couldn’t help but worry about her elder sister’s condition.
Her concerns were often silenced by their parents as they tried to convince her nothing was wrong.
