Chapter 329: Dreaded to Close His Eyes
The husband and wife sat in silence. Leslie continued to gently wipe Calix’s head dry as the man kept mum. Only the faint sounds of their breathing and the towel grazing his hair echoed in the ensuite wardrobe.
"This is better... I think?"
Leslie lowered the towel from Calix’s head. She softly ran her fingers through his hair, feeling a slight dampness compared to before.
"It’s better," Calix replied, his voice subdued. Blinking, he took the towel from Leslie before grasping her wrists. He pressed his thumbs there, "Don’t your wrists and arms hurt?"
"Hehe, not much ah..." Leslie shook her head, laughter rolling out of her mouth, "You know how is it..."
Calix said nothing. He began to massage Leslie’s hands, starting from her right one.
"I know you might be hurting but... it felt good when you dried my hair," mumbled Calix, his eyes staring at Leslie’s right wrist, "Sorry..."
Chuckling, helplessness imbued in Leslie’s voice. She playfully chided him, "If you say sorry again, I’ll kick... your legs..."
"You’ll hurt your feet next."
"...tsk."
Calix chuckled, amused when Leslie responded by clicking her tongue.
A numbing pain actually throbbed in Leslie’s upper arms and wrists. The ache came because she kept her entire limbs up for quite a long time when trying to dry Calix’s hair.
Leslie didn’t let the hurt show on her countenance as long as it was bearable. This was a normal occurrence for her because of her weak constitution.
Leslie had gotten used to it, either in her daily life or during her rehab. But, Calix was always aware of the possibility of her being in discomfort.
Once again the husband and wife sat in silence. Leslie’s eyes remained on Calix as his gaze fell on her hands. The warmth of his broad palms seeped into her skin, carrying along the appropriate pressure from his fingertips.
The clock continued ticking as the time entered another hour of the early morning.
Calliope was still sound asleep alone in bed. Her sleeptalk occasionally echoed from the outside of the wardrobe.
Calix shifted from Leslie’s right arm to her left. The glum lingered on his countenance but, he looked better than earlier, much to Leslie’s relief.
’Oh... that hair sticks out.’
Leslie quietly raised her right hand, playing with Calix’s hair. She heard him laughing in helplessness as he let her do what she wanted.
"Leslie."
Calix called out her name without looking at Leslie. She raised her brows, her eyes shifted from his hair to his face.
"Yes?"
Calix parted his mouth, seemingly wanting to say more but, hesitation overtook his heart. Bringing her hand down, Leslie didn’t push him to continue talking.
Pursing his lips, worry brimming in Calix’s mind. He was unsure whether this was a good thing to be shared or not.
After all...
Talking about death was unpleasant.
He still remembered the dread and helplessness when he was on the brink of death, and how his thoughts were only centered around the woman.
Every regret and unspoken word washed over him in a deep sea of sorrow, influenced by his genuine feelings for her.
"I’m sorry..."
Lightly shaking his head, Calix lifted his eyes from Leslie’s arm to her face. He paused, finding it difficult to speak.
"Calix..."
"I want to tell you but... I can’t. At least, not now."
Calix’s voice cracked further, the anguish lying beneath tore Leslie’s heart. She couldn’t imagine the depth of his pain that dulled the usual luster on his countenance.
"Whenever you’re ready..." Leslie reached for one of Calix’s hands. Smiling, she locked her gaze into his reddened eyes, "Don’t force yourself if you can’t... Whenever you’re ready, Calix..."
Despite her brimming curiosity and overflowing worry for him, Leslie never wished to coerce Calix into opening up. If he needed a push, she would do it but, not by blatantly demanding him to disclose his fears.
Calix bit his lower lip, finding comfort in Leslie’s understanding even though he felt bad for making her wait. He placed his other palm on the back of her hand, enveloping it in the warm cocoon of his hands.
"...thank you, Leslie."
The few words slipped out between Calix’s lips. His tone was low but, carrying the weight of his gratitude for Leslie’s simple act of compassion.
Leslie glanced at the wall clock, "We should return to bed... it’s getting late..."
"Ah... we should."
Realizing what time it was, Calix immediately agreed. Dawn would break in a few hours.
Calix and Leslie decided to leave the Xu family’s ancestral home right after lunch. They planned to spend the rest of the day relaxing at their manor with Calliope.
"Wanna go to the toilet?"
"No... I just want some water..."
"Okay."
He pushed Leslie’s wheelchair out of the wardrobe. They were relieved to see Calliope’s sleep hadn’t been affected by their absence at all.
Calix handed Leslie a small cup of water. He shifted his attention to the little dumpling whose current sleeping position amused him.
"No wonder she can sleep alone," Calix shook his head, "She sleeps like a log ah."
"Our Poppy is independent..." Leslie replied to Calix’s remark after taking a sip of water, "I hope she won’t... grow up quickly tho..."
"I feel the same."
Calix adjusted Calliope’s sleeping posture before covering her body with the blanket. The little one smacked her mouth and sleeptalked about some chocolates.
"Tsk, little glutton."
Leslie stifled her laughter, thinking it was funny to see Calix pinched Calliope’s chubby face. Putting the cup on the bedside table, she said, "Go to sleep... Try to get a better one this time..."
"Oh, yes..."
Calix lay on the bed after making sure Leslie was comfortable on her side. He glanced at her and Calliope while pulling his blanket.
"...thank you, Leslie. Good night."
Leslie’s soft chuckle echoed in the dimness of the room, "You too, Calix... Sleep well..."
"En."
Lying straight on his back, Calix stared at the ceiling. He dreaded closing his eyes, afraid of returning to the moment of his death.
The man and the woman...
He had to find them!
