Chapter 318: If We’re Talking About the Stupidest One, He Could Be...

"Oh..."

Calix picked up the look of hesitancy on Leslie’s countenance. The way she abruptly cut her laughter off tingled his sense of curiosity.

Raising his brows, Calix asked cautiously, "Is there anything, Leslie?"

In the past months of knowing Leslie, there were times Calix could tell something was bothering her despite the minimal signs. Strangely, he didn’t think it had anything to do with his perceptiveness, the one skill he cultivated from a young age.

Leslie parted her lips yet, no words slipping out of them. She stared back at Calix, finding his usual mellow gaze on her. The way he looked at her helped to ease some of her concerns.

"Well... do you remember what we’ve talked about... before? The one related to... introducing Calliope to your entire family..."

Calix tilted his head, wondering, "Which one? About telling her our biological child?"

"Quite close..."

Fighting against her hesitancy, Leslie brought up her previous conversation with Calix. She specifically talked about how some people would think Calliope was not his biological child.

"There’s a chance people assume... Calliope is a child we adopted instead of... being biologically ours. They also... might think she is mine but... you’re not her father..."

Leslie’s quiet tone was audible in the air, her concern reaching Calix as he paid full attention on her. He didn’t miss even the slightest change in her expression.

"I’m worried if those people will... try to do something behind our backs..."

Leslie was aware of the tight security around Calix and his immediate family but, some people tended to lurk in the dark as they waited for the perfect chance to execute their plan.

Calix let out a soft hum, understanding where Leslie’s concern lay. Smiling at her, he lifted one hand, reaching for one part of her silky locks.

Blinking, Leslie’s eyes shifted from Calix’s mellow countenance to his right hand.

Calix twirled Leslie’s locks around his finger, finding comfort in the simple action. She watched him playing with her hair in silence, a faint blush blossoming on her cheeks.

"Knowing my relatives, some will have that particular thought," responded Calix. His eyes still lingered on Leslie’s face, "I’m prepared for such possibilities."

Calix had experienced and heard many things throughout the years he was raised in high society. Deception was a staple food for most in this circle.

The Xu family might look peaceful in general but, they still had plenty of two-faced people hiding among the rest.

Pursing her lips, Leslie pondered more about the knowledge she gained from Mimo[01]. Calix might already have some people in mind but, she still wanted to subtly leave him a hint.

"If they did a DNA test behind our back... who do you think will they be?"

Instead of naming the possible culprit, Leslie guised her attempt as a question. She fiddled with the skirt of her nightgown, waiting for Calix to answer her.

"Hurm... if we’re talking about the stupidest person to even try this, it should be that foolish Gerard. You know, the one you threw stones before?"

"..."

Leslie didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. Calix sounded so disinterested once he mentioned that man’s name as if he wasn’t bothered by the latter attempting such a thing at all.

Letting Leslie’s locks go, Calix crossed one of his legs onto another. He propped up an elbow, supporting his face with the back of his hand. He didn’t let his gaze stray away from her.

"I want to see him screw up," Calix smirked, imagining how funny Gerard’s face would be if that really happened, "Still, I won’t let him mess with our precious daughter. He might try some tricks but, he has to answer me if he even snatches one of her hairs."

Leslie chuckled, knowing full well Calix was thinking of Gerard’s doom. She pointed out, "Before he answers you... I think he has to face Grandma first..."

"Oh, you’re right."

Calix’s mind shifted from Gerard to Old Madam Xu. Without a doubt, the stupid young man would earn the iron old lady’s ire if he ever did such a thing. After all, the Xu family’s matriarch was known to disdain underhanded tricks.

"Well, everything’s up to how he uses his brain."

Shrugging, Calix didn’t care whether Gerard would truly do something behind his back or not. No matter what, he intended to keep an eye on the man and several other deceitful relatives.

Leslie simply nodded. She felt better after bringing this matter up to Calix even though she knew how meticulous he was in everything.

"You should go to sleep..." Leslie glanced at the wall clock, finding the time had already gone past ten, "Won’t you get busier later? Edward... will go on his trip soon, isn’t it?"

"Oh, yeah... He’ll go and enjoy the summer. I wonder when I can bring you and Poppy to the beach."

Calix let out a sigh, thinking of Edward’s upcoming summer getaway. He knew for sure both Leslie and Calliope would enjoy their time vacationing at the beach. He had already planned to bring them to one of the Xu family’s private islands.

Leslie liked the idea but, she was aware Calix would be too busy for that. Perhaps, they could go after Edward returned from his vacation.

"Summer has just started... we’ll go to the beach when there’s free time... Oh ya, the Dragon Boat Festival is coming... We can go there first..."

Leslie’s words reminded Calix of the upcoming festival in two weeks. It should fall on Thursday. Xu International would be on leave until the weekend. The four-day holiday was enough for now.

"Alright! Let’s bring her there. She’ll love it, won’t she?"

"She will..."

This would be the first festival they celebrated together as a family. Just thinking about it made Leslie happy. Calix’s joy was also evident on his beaming face.

"Good night, Leslie."

Calix rose to his feet, inwardly forcing himself to leave the bedroom.

"Sleep well, Calix... See you at breakfast..."

"Yeah, you too."

Calix grasped the sides of his pants, holding back from reaching out for her again. He yearned to embrace her but, he didn’t dare.

’Soon, I need to talk about our marriage with her.’

Burying the thoughts from being expressed on his face, he gave her one last smile before stepping out of the room.
