Chapter 307: A Proud Son of the Heavens

"XANDER!"

Calix’s voice thundered in the room, flaring vibrations in its wake. Xander’s accusation detonated his suppressed wrath.

How dared he?

How dared he?!

Intense rage swallowed Calix. He gripped his fists hard, digging the nails deeper into his palms. Fury heated his entire body as his blazing gaze was locked on Xander.

"Apologize to my wife. You’ve disrespected her."

Calix lowered his voice, seemingly trying to hold himself back. The eerieness of his quiet tone carried along his stifled anger. The whites in his glowering eyes reddened.

Xander, Leslie and Violet froze under the man’s explosion of fury. None expected to see Calix abruptly lashing out right after the former’s shocking accusation toward Leslie.

"C-Calix... calm down..."

As the party involved, Leslie was perplexed by Xander’s accusation. She didn’t know from who or where he heard such a distorted truth.

Before Leslie herself could show any reaction, Calix was the first to admonish Xander. He acted as if he was the one slandered by that man.

"Calix... calm down..."

Leslie tugged at Calix’s right hand, feeling the man’s body trembling in anger. Brows furrowing, she hoped he wouldn’t say anything he might regret later.

To her surprise, he loosened his fist before grasping her hand gently. In the midst of his setting rage, he still wanted to offer her comfort.

Still locking his eyes on Xander, Calix growled, "Leslie is my wife. Calliope is our biological daughter. Get your facts straight."

The creases on Xander’s forehead deepened. He really didn’t expect to receive such a harsh reaction from Calix, his friend who was generally calm and level-headed when facing troubles.

Did he get bewitched by this woman?

What had she done?

Xander shifted his gaze from the fuming Calix to the frowning Leslie. He loathed women who pretended to be pure on the outside while possessing rotten hearts.

Xander clenched his jaw taut, trying to stifle his own frustration and rage from bursting. He stared at Leslie as if she was poison.

"Look at me, Xander."

Suppressed fury tainted Calix’s usually mellow voice. He abruptly stood up, standing right before Leslie. He hated seeing how deprecating Xander’s gaze on Leslie was, enough for him to tear more into his long-time friend.

They had been the best of brothers for almost three decades. How could Calix not know what Xander had in his mind?

"If you quickly divorce her, you won’t get stuck raising another man’s child," Xander narrowed his eyes, unwilling to back down, "You’re too good for her, Calix."

Xander’s further words exasperated Calix and baffled Leslie more. Violet was also puzzled by her boyfriend’s continuous slanders toward the sick lady.

Her eyes widened in perplexity, Violet held Xander’s arm, "Hey... what are you talking about? Xander, this is serious! You can’t just accuse Mrs. Xu like that."

"I know what I’m doing," Xander quickly dismissed Violet’s concern. He kept looking at the infuriated Calix and the confused Leslie, "This has been going on for months. I can’t let this witch ruin my friend."

Calix took a deep breath, trying everything he could to calm the raging waves of his wrath. No matter how infuriated he was, getting into a full-blown verbal fight wouldn’t be a good choice now.

The longer this tirade went, the more Leslie had to listen to Xander defaming her.

Calix stared pointedly at Xander, showing his stance in this matter, "You won’t listen to me at all, won’t you? Leave. You’ve disrespected my wife and me enough tonight."

Calix wanted to force an apology out of Xander for Leslie but, she didn’t deserve any phony one.

Xander Qin had lived his entire life like a proud son of the heavens. Even if he committed mistakes toward his elders, lowering his head to gain forgiveness was something he wouldn’t ever do.

"Wake up, Calix," Xander brooded, stubbornly trying to make his friend see sense, "Don’t tie yourself to this vile witch!"

"Xander! Leave!"

"W-wait! Calix, wait!"

Leslie yanked her hand from Calix’s grasp, now trying to hold his arm with both of her palms. Her action shifted his focus from Xander to her.

"Leslie, don’t worry, I won’t..."

Leslie quickly cut Calix off, shaking her head repeatedly before firmly saying, "No, no, listen to me first! I have... something to ask him."

Calix wanted to stop Leslie, knowing Xander wouldn’t cease defaming her right on her face. But, her resolute look made him hesitate.

"...okay," Calix nodded once, relenting to Leslie, "I’ll kick him out the second he mistreats you."

Leslie laughed in helplessness, a trace of amusement cast on her face. She smiled, trying to reassure Calix, "Okay. Thank you, Calix..."

Calix returned a faint smile to Leslie but, his smiling face dropped once he looked at Xander, "Pretend to be civil, won’t you? I won’t hesitate to kick you out if you don’t."

Pressing his lips in a straight line, Xander gritted his teeth. He was annoyed to see how easily Calix succumbed to the woman’s request.

Calix had never acted like this!

Just how deep this witch had ruined him?!

"...yeah, let’s be civil," Violet whispered in Xander’s ears, sharing the same sentiment as Calix, "Listen to what Mrs. Xu wanna ask you first."

Violet was still bewildered by Xander’s action. She didn’t know what had pushed him to berate Leslie, even calling her a witch. This behavior was uncalled for.

"Mr. Qin, tell me..." Leslie began to speak. Engaging in a battle of stare with Xander, she showed no hints of fear as she calmly said, "You knew about me giving birth... to a child. Who... told you that? Where... did you hear it?"

Leslie’s inquiry seemed to shed some light on Calix as he listened to her questioning Xander.

Yes... she was right!

How did Xander know about Calliope?

Even he himself learned nothing about it until later.

Calix silently berated himself. He was so immersed in his own rage that he forgot the root of this problem.

All this wouldn’t happen if Xander didn’t know about Calliope’s birth!
