Chapter 298: Of Braids and Ribbons
"Yay! Matchy-matchy with Mama and Papa!"
A happy dumpling ran around the bedroom, her purple skirt billowing around her. High on her excitement, she ran and ran and ran, not showing any signs of stopping.
Calliope’s energetic antic brought laughter out of Leslie and Calix’s mouths. Both of them were still inside the ensuite wardrobe. The open door allowed them to see their daughter perfectly.
The husband and wife knew the little one would be happy to wear something similar with them but, it seemed like they had underestimated how joyful she could be.
Calliope wore a puffy-sleeved cotton dress in a light purple color. Pink and white flowers were embroidered on the chest area, complimented with a bow.
Calix opted for a pastel purple round-collared shirt. He paired it with a white jacket and long khaki pants.
As for Leslie, she chose a loose long dress in a lighter shade than Calliope’s. She wore a pink chiffon cardigan over her sleeveless dress.
"Poppy, want Daddy to do your hair?" called Calix from the ensuite wardrobe, "I’m doing your mama’s now."
"Ah! Poppy want!"
Calliope hurriedly ran to the wardrobe. Eyes glimmering with excitement, she stared at Calix and Leslie.
The man was brushing the lady’s silky long hair as she sat on the wheelchair, facing the huge vanity mirror.
"Papa, what will you do ah?"
Calliope was intrigued by what kind of style Calix would do for Leslie.
"A single braid. I’ll twist the plaits with a ribbon."
"Wow! Papa is so good!"
Calliope’s praise earned a boastful smile from Calix while Leslie burst out laughing. She put her small hands on her mother’s lap, continuously looking at the husband and wife.
"Poppy, Mama needs to pick a ribbon... Wanna help me?"
Wanting to include Calliope further, Leslie asked for the little one’s help. She gestured at the ribbons lying inside a box on the vanity table.
Leslie’s question perked Calliope up. Standing so close to the vanity table, she grasped the edge while standing on her toes.
Chuckling, Calix put down the hairbrush. He picked Calliope up. His sudden action earned a gasp from the little one.
"Can you see them now?"
"Can!"
Frowning, Calliope intently stared at the ribbons. Leslie and Calix held back from laughing too much.
Oh~ A pink ribbon, a purple ribbon, a yellow ribbon~
So many ribbons ah!
But...
"Papa, can Poppy matchy-matchy with Mama?" asked Calliope without looking away from the ribbons.
"You want a braid too? With a similar ribbon?" Calix raised his brows, swiftly understanding what the little munchkin meant.
Calliope quickly nodded, expressing her wants.
"Alright, Papa will do that," Calix agreed, Laughter still laced his tone as he continued speaking, "Now choose the ribbons."
"That one! White!"
After Calliope decided on the ribbons, Calix put her back on the floor. He deftly braided Leslie’s strands with the white satin ribbon, the color contrasting her jet black hair. He brought the braid to her front once he was done.
"Poppy, your turn."
"Okay~"
Calliope climbed on the vanity stool next to Leslie’s wheelchair. She giggled when Calix sprayed her head with a sweet-smelling hairspray. Leslie smilingly watched the father and daughter’s interaction.
"Our buttercup is ready!"
"Wow~ So pretty!"
Calliope openly admired her ribboned braid. Her round and unadulterated eyes expressed her pure joy. She looked at her reflection in the mirror before tilting up her chin to gaze at Leslie.
"We’re matchy-matchy! Poppy is happy~"
Calliope’s excitement lit up a bulb in Calix’s mind. Taking his phone from the vanity table, he immediately opened the camera app.
"Let’s take photos!"
"Photos?"
Calix’s sudden suggestion intrigued Leslie and Calliope. The mother and daughter stared at the man in curiosity as the man moved away from them, finding a good spot to capture some of their photos.
"What a waste ah if we don’t take photos," said Calix while adjusting the position of the phone. He stared at Leslie and Calliope through the screen, "Poppy, move closer to your mama."
"Like this?"
Calliope swiftly scooted toward Leslie. At the same time, the lady put a hand on the child’s back, assuming a more affectionate pose.
"Yeah! That’s good! You guys are free to move. Three, two, one!"
Kacha! Kacha!
Under Calix’s encouragement, Calliope giddily posed for the camera while Leslie couldn’t change her posture much. The man took several photos before he finally put down his phone.
"All looks so good! We need to print these later," Calix sighed in delight. He already imagined the number of photo albums their family would have in the future.
"Calix, won’t you take photos... with us too?"
"Ah."
Leslie’s question stunned Calix. The husband and wife exchanged a look.
"Papa, take photos together!" Calliope echoed Leslie’s sentiment. Bobbing her head up and down, she exclaimed, "We’re matchy-matchy. Should take photos together ah."
Unable to refuse his wife and daughter, Calix nodded once. He laughed sheepishly as he had indeed forgotten to include himself in their family photo.
"Let’s take them downstairs," suggested Calix, thinking of the lounge, "We can ask Aunt Wendy or someone else to help."
"Sounds good..."
"Yay!"
After making sure everyone was ready, the family of three headed out of Leslie’s bedroom. They already had breakfast together earlier, prepared by Aunt Wendy.
Mrs. Bai had returned home, replaced by Mrs. Sang. Mrs. An and Mrs. Su wouldn’t come back until the day after tomorrow.
Downstairs, Calix, Leslie and Calliope posed on the three-seater couch. Uncle Raymond took the role of a photographer.
"Miss Poppy and Mrs. Leslie look so pretty ah! Mr. Calix should be grateful to have you ladies!"
"Uncle, does my handsome face nothing before them?"
"I’m sorry, sir. It’s not."
"Hahaha!"
Laughter echoed in the lounge as happiness reflected from the family of three, witnessed by Uncle Raymond and Aunt Wendy. The clicking sounds of the camera harmonized with their giggles.
Calix fondly smiled at Leslie and Calliope as he immersed himself in the halo of bliss. He couldn’t deny how happy he was right now.
Today seemed ordinary but, these two angels’ presence brightened up his day. He couldn’t wait to experience more with them.
His lovely wife and darling daughter.
