Chapter 296: Man in the Mirror
’Eh? What place is this?’
Blinking in confusion, Calix slowly looked around him. It seemed like he was inside an apartment, a quite old and small one. He was standing at the entryway, barefoot.
The apartment was quiet as if no one was there. He saw sunlight streaming through the windows, indicating it was the daytime. Tall but old buildings could be seen surrounding the area.
’Why did I feel... weirdly conscious ah?’
Calix looked down at his body. He found himself still wearing the light yellow pajamas from tonight.
Dreaming was not a weird thing when one was sleeping but, Calix was confused because of how real this dream felt. He even remembered going to bed with Leslie and Calliope earlier.
’Should I pinch myself?’
Driven by his curiosity or lack of better judgment, Calix slapped his right cheek.
’Ouch! Ow...’
Sensing pain from both his palm and cheek, Calix scolded himself. He didn’t know what made him slap himself instead of just doing a light pinching.
’Forget it. Let’s look around.’
Shrugging, Calix walked further inside the apartment. The entryway was small and short. It only took him three steps to reach the living room.
Calix stopped in the middle of the living room. Despite being small, the place was neat. Not even one used mug could be seen. He even smelled a subtle floral fragrance in the air.
’Whoever the owner is, he or she surely takes care of this place well.’
Calix didn’t know how long he would be inside this realistic-feeling dream. He simply thought it would be better if he spent some time here before trying to walk out of the apartment.
Sweeping his gaze around the living room, Calix’s eyes fell on a box sitting on top of a three-tier drawer cabinet.
’Aren’t those yarn balls?’
Hurrying to the cabinet, Calix peered into the brown box. He raised his brows, his eyes lighting up at the sight of the colorful yarn balls.
’Wow! Does the owner crochet too? Eh, this toy looks like Mimo.’
A red crochet fox toy lay together with the yarn balls.
Despite being aware some crochet toys shared resemblances, Calix couldn’t help but think how eerily similar this toy was to Calliope’s. The only difference was this fox toy looked new as if it had just been completed.
’Nah, I just dreamed of Mimo here. Tsk tsk, why does he follow me to this dream?’
Calix raised one hand, intending to pick up the crochet fox toy. Stopping midway, he was inevitably reminded of something.
Wait... Didn’t this mean he was in a ghostly state like Leslie before?
’Did she curse me ah?’
Shaking his head, Calix went through with his intention. He wondered about his ability to touch any physical items.
’...en?’
Once again pausing, a thought abruptly crossed Calix’s mind, followed by a weird sensation.
Frowning, he turned to look around the apartment. His eyes had an undecipherable glint in them this time.
’This place...’
Creases wrinkled Calix’s forehead as he didn’t understand the feeling that suddenly overtook his heart and mind.
He had never stepped foot in this small apartment but...
Why did he sense some kind of familiarity with this place?
The faded mint green color of the walls. The small throw pillows on the worn-out two-seater couch. The tiny crack on the wall near the five-tiered bookshelf.
’A dream... This is just a weird dream...’
Whispering to himself, Calix tried to contain his discomfort. He believed he was just stuck in a peculiar dream. He would return to reality once he woke up from sleeping.
"Honey~ Are you in there? I’m home!"
Calix froze, never expecting to hear a woman’s voice in this dream.
Who was she? The apartment’s owner?
Argh! Where to hide?
In his panic, Calix ran toward the two-seater couch on one side of the living room. He tried to hide by crouching next to the settee, crouching further toward the wall.
’Argh! Let me be a real ghost ah!’
Calix screamed inwardly, hoping the woman wouldn’t ever see him. He held his breath, trying so hard to make himself unheard and invisible.
But...
"Hey! What are you doing there? Wanna surprise me? Got you!"
The woman stood opposite Calix, catching him in no time. Laughing out loud, she seemed to be amused by what she was seeing.
’...crap.’
"Did you lose your screws ah? Honey, come out~"
Under Calix’s surprised gaze, the unfamiliar woman grabbed his right arm with both of her hands, trying to get him away from the hiding place.
’She... why wasn’t she surprised to see me?’
In a state of shock, Calix just let the woman drag him to stand. He awkwardly followed her.
"Honey! Guess what? I found a cute mirror at the thrift store! Like one from a fairytale!"
The lady quickly let go of Calix’s arm, acting as if she didn’t see the look of confusion on the man’s face. Her behavior also indicated she was close, having an intimate relationship somehow.
But, this was wrong ah!
He didn’t know this woman at all!
Did she mistake him with her husband?
"Excuse me, miss..."
Stunned, Calix abruptly stopped talking. Shivers ghosted down his spine as he realized something else was wrong with him.
His voice... why did his voice change?
"What are you talking about ah? Calling me ’Miss’?"
The woman chuckled. She had just gone to the kitchen before swiftly returning with a mirror, the one she happily brought up just now.
"W-well, I just..."
How should he explain this?
By telling this woman this was just a dream?
"Look! Your hair is all messy from your sleep! Hehe, still handsome to me~"
The woman approached Calix while positioning the mirror in front of him. Her delight made her oblivious to the pale look on the man’s face as soon as he saw his reflection.
Calix blinked, staring straight at the man in the mirror. Lips shivering, his feet were locked to the floor.
This... what was this?
Instead of finding his own face looking back at him, he saw a completely different man in the mirror.
