Chapter 269: The Mother and Daughter’s Abundant Selflessness and Perseverance

Calix went outside to look for Director Li, intending to lay the sleeping Calliope in a more comfortable place. He smiled at the older lady once he spotted her on a bench nearby.

"How is Calliope?" asked Director Li as she returned Calix’s smile. Rising to her feet, she approached the younger man, "Has she calmed down?"

Calix appeared earlier than Director Li expected. It hadn’t been an hour from the time she left the office. She thought the husband and wife would spend a longer time to comfort Calliope.

"She’s sleeping. She cried so much earlier," Calix let out faint laughter, recalling what had just unfolded in the last hour, "But, she didn’t reject us. We believe we’ll get to talk to her better after she wakes up."

Calix filled Director Li in with more details. But, he hadn’t brought up the topic of bringing Calliope home with them yet. He planned to talk more to the child before deciding on anything.

"Oh, where’s Calliope’s bedroom? I’ll carry her there," asked Calix, reminding himself about his initial intention of looking for Director Li.

"You should head to the guest room, Mr. Xu. The one you used before. You can bring Mrs. Xu to rest there too. Spend some time together with just you three."

Director Li’s tone had a hint of teasing, earning a chuckle from Calix. He nodded, agreeing with the middle-aged woman.

"Yeah, perhaps I should do that. My wife and I were balls of nerves from last night. We could barely sleep."

Director Li lightly shook her head, sympathizing with the husband and wife. Even if she was not in their shoes, she could tell how nervous Calix and Leslie were. They had been waiting for this moment for a long time.

"Come. I’ll help to push Mrs. Xu’s wheelchair."

Mrs. An was waiting nearby but, Director Li didn’t plan to call the private nurse unless Leslie wished for it.

"Thank you, Director Li."

Calix and Director Li returned to the office. From the door, they saw the rear of Leslie’s head as she sat with her back facing them. She was cradling Calliope on the couch.

Lowering her head, Leslie brushed her lips on top of Calliope’s head. Calix and Director Li couldn’t see her face properly but, they imagined a blissful smile was carved on her lips.

"Leslie, Director Li’s back."

Calix’s voice caught Leslie’s attention. Lifting her chin, she saw Director Li and the man approaching her.

"Director Li... thank you for your help..."

Unable to contain her joy and gratitude, Leslie verbalized her appreciation toward Director Li. Her eyes were slightly swollen due to her crying but, their glimmering light conveyed her inner peace.

"Yeah, we’re very grateful for your help all this time, Director Li," Calix nodded, expressing him sharing the same opinion as Leslie’s, "We wouldn’t get to know our child. You also have been treating her well all these years."

Both Calix and Leslie were aware of horror stories associated with orphanages. Some children were unfortunate to have cruel people as their caretakers, forcing them to experience physical and mental abuse.

Director Li chuckled, understanding the deeper meaning behind the spouses’ words.

"Every child is precious no matter what kind of circumstances they came from. My mother often said, not all orphaned children are lucky enough to get their forever homes. So, she worked hard to ensure they were happy living here."

Director Li’s mother, the founder of this orphanage was committed to bringing happiness to these unfortunate children. Some of them lost their entire families while others were simply abandoned.

Every adoption applicant would be screened thoroughly by the former director with the help of the welfare council. She tried not to mistakenly send any child to a home that might rob them of their happiness.

Calix and Leslie exchanged a glance, thinking what kind of a saint Director Li’s mother was. Without any doubt, the middle-aged lady inherited her mother’s abundant selflessness and perseverance.

"Come, let’s go to the guest room," Director Li brought the wheelchair closer to the couch, saying, "I’ll push you, Mrs. Xu. Mr. Xu can carry Calliope."

Agreeing with Director Li, Leslie nodded once, "Thank you..."

Bending over, Calix carefully carried Calliope, sensing how light the child was. Leslie didn’t let go of Calliope until he firmly held her.

"She’s sleeping so deeply ah," Calix chuckled, his eyes admiring the sleeping Calliope fondly, "Haha, will she wake up hungry?"

Leslie shook her head in helplessness, happy to see ease and joy glowed on Calix’s countenance. She could tell he was as relieved as her.

’Time to focus more on Poppy.’

They still had so many things to tell and discuss with Calliope. Even if the child openly expressed her desire to follow them, they wanted to make some things clear for Calliope’s own benefit.

Bringing Calliope back with them meant she couldn’t easily meet her friends here anymore. It also meant changes in the environment.

No matter what, Calix and Leslie agreed to be open with Calliope aside from taking her opinions into consideration. Despite still being a small child, she was old enough to know and understand their concerns.

Leslie had already told Calix they needed to change their ways when communicating with Calliope. Talking to a child required different approaches than talking to an adult.

Soon, all three of them headed out of the office, including a child being carried.

Director Li pushed the wheelchair despite Leslie insisting she could move it herself. Calix walked next to them as he carefully held Calliope in his arms. None of them talked much until they reached the guest room.

"Feel free to rest here," Director Li helped Leslie to the bed while Calix placed Calliope on the mattress, "Have lunch with us, Mr. Xu, Mrs. Xu."

"We’ll do that," Calix agreed, "Thank you again, Director Li."

"See you soon..."

Director Li gave the spouses one last smile before leaving the bedroom. She didn’t forget to cast a look at the sleeping Calliope.

The child seemed to be unbothered by everything that happened around her as she slept soundly under her parents’ care.
