Chapter 264: What Did She Dream of Last Night
Blinking her eyes, Calliope tilted her head, confused and intrigued by Calix’s words. She looked at Leslie before moving her eyes to Director Li. The older woman was serving the cups on the table.
Eh... Why did everyone look serious ah?
Calliope was still a child but, she was old enough to perceive the situation around her. She couldn’t help but wonder what made her favorite uncle and aunt look sad.
"Uncle and Auntie wanna talk to Poppy? About what?" asked Calliope, pointing to herself with one hand, "Why do you look sad ah?"
Calix and Leslie froze momentarily, never expecting Calliope to notice the somber ambiance around them.
Director Li said nothing as she assumed the role of a listener. She wouldn’t speak until it was needed. It was better to let the Xu spouses and Calliope talk between themselves first.
Refraining from sighing out of uneasiness, Calix curled up his lips but, the smile didn’t reach his eyes. He quietly asked Calliope, "Poppy, do we look sad to you?"
"Yes," replied Calliope with a nod. Her round eyes expressed her curiosity, "Why, Uncle? Had bad dreams? Auntie too?"
Calliope recalled the time she spent with Leslie and Calix yesterday.
She had so much fun going on a picnic with them, so much so that she wanted to do it every day.
Calliope’s desire led her to come up with a wish before she went to bed last night – the one she started having but not daring to say it out loud.
While hugging Mimo, Calliope kept chanting the same prayers until she drifted into sleep. She woke up happy because of the visions she saw in her dreams.
Would Uncle and Auntie be happy if she said what her wish was?
What if they become more sad ah? She didn’t want to make them unhappy with her.
But, her friends Ruby and Daisy said Uncle and Auntie would be happy. If not, they wouldn’t come to see her again.
Conflicted with her inner turmoil, Calliope stared from Calix to Leslie simultaneously. She didn’t notice how tightly she held the toy Mimo.
"Uncle and Auntie had bad dreams?" Calliope repeated her question. Stopping for a pause, hesitancy overtook her small heart before she said, "Poppy... didn’t have a bad dream."
Could she tell them?
Or, she shouldn’t?
What should she do ah? Could anyone tell her?
Noticing the slight change in Calliope’s expression, Leslie parted her lips to speak "What did Poppy dream... last night? Can you... tell us?"
"Yes, tell us, Poppy," Calix tried to soften his countenance, hoping to ease the little one’s worries, "We’d love to hear it."
Leslie’s willingness to hear and Calix’s reassurance perked Calliope up. Her eyes suddenly gained another layer of joy as her countenance brightened.
"Hehe, well..."
Giggling, Calliope’s little mind no longer thought of her previous worry. She tilted her chin up, looking at Director Li as if wanting to get the older woman’s consolation as well.
Director Li chuckled, relieved to see Calliope was back in high spirits. She nodded once, "Go on, Poppy. Tell Mr. and Mrs. Xu what did you dream last night."
Calliope blinked. Resembling the soft pink color of the begonias from yesterday, her chubby cheeks blushed slightly.
"Poppy, Auntie and Uncle go for a picnic again. Hehe, then Uncle brings Poppy to play with a big big swing. Auntie calls Poppy to eat strawberries! Many strawberries like rose flowers!"
Calliope’s little heart couldn’t contain the immense joy, leading it to overflow. She only tasted happiness as she dreamed of spending more time with her favorite aunt and uncle.
Playing together, dining together and... waking up from a fulfilling sleep together.
Like a family.
She was still reluctant but, she remembered what her granny often told her and her friends.
No one would know what they wished for if they didn’t dare to voice those thoughts.
So, she would tell them.
"Hehe, Poppy wonders when we can play like that every day," resumed Calliope, still smiling shyly yet full of hope. Without her being aware of it, each of her words touched Calix and Leslie’s hearts.
Calix shifted his gaze from Calliope to Leslie, finding she was also looking at him. What Calliope had just told them seemed to come at the perfect time.
Feeling more at ease, Calix focused back on Calliope. He threw a question to the little one, "Then, what if we make your dreams come true, Poppy?"
"...huh?"
Caught off guard by the simple words, Calliope blankly stared at Calix. Her little mouth parted slightly, forming a round shape.
Calix paused, trying to get his question to sink into Calliope’s head. He swore he could hear how loud and erratic his heartbeat was right now.
Calliope shook her head. Her reaction froze Calix and Leslie. Flustered, none of them dared to speak.
"Poppy, did you shake your head because you dislike the idea?"
Director Li took over, thinking Calliope’s action was actually not due to her refusal. Rather, the reason was simply her being a child who often showed some expressions without any deeper meaning.
"Ah, no, not that!" Calliope shook her head again. In a panic, she quickly told Calix and Leslie, "Not because Poppy doesn’t like it ah. It’s because... Poppy thinks of something else... and gets excited."
Shrinking her neck, Calliope kept moving her eyes from the husband and wife to the toy in her arms. She seemed very conflicted with whatever going on in her mind now.
Calliope’s reply flooded Calix and Leslie with relief. Anything was fine as long as the little girl didn’t directly reject them before hearing the rest.
"Can we know what is... Poppy thinking now?" asked Leslie, wondering what was troubling her daughter, "Maybe we can help..."
"Yes, yes," Calix nodded repeatedly, holding back from scaring Calliope with more questions, "You can ask us, Poppy."
Calliope didn’t immediately answer Calix and Leslie. She wandered her eyes from them to the toy Mimo before they settled on Director Li.
"Poppy wanna ask..." Calliope returned her gaze to Leslie and Calix, her voice akin to a whisper, "Do Auntie and Uncle want to adopt Poppy?"
So, they could become a family.
