Chapter 262: Are You Worried About Her Acceptance?
Sitting alone in the lounge of the villa, Leslie quietly stared out the open sliding door. The night view of this place was good, enough for her to feel at ease. She enjoyed the pleasantness of the passing breeze.
The clock was pointing to nine-fifteen in the evening. A tranquil silence blanketed the entire area as Leslie was left alone for the moment because Calix stepped out to make a call to Edward.
Aside from Mrs. Su who was on duty tonight, the rest of the helpers had already retreated to their rooms. The bodyguards took turns patrolling the vicinity to ensure its safety.
Hugging one of the throw pillows, Leslie shifted her eyes to the glowy moon. She couldn’t help but recall one particular moment that happened during the picnic.
Intrigued by what might be in Calliope’s mind, Leslie brought up a question to the little girl. She asked her daughter after all three of them including Calix alighted the rowboat.
"Poppy, if you can have one of your wishes... granted, what will it be?"
Calliope’s response was quick. She showed no hesitation at all as she excitedly replied to Leslie.
"Play with Auntie and Uncle! Many many many times! Hehehe~"
Calliope’s infectious laughter expressed her genuine happiness. She continued jumping up and down, almost stumbling on her little feet. Calix had to grab the little one to prevent her from falling over the deck.
"Then, do you wish to be with us more often?"
Calix asked Calliope after making sure the little girl stood firm on her tiny feet. Leslie didn’t think he would follow up with that kind of inquiry.
Once again, Calliope’s answer drew smiles on Calix and Leslie’s countenances.
"Of course! Hehe~ Where can we go next? Auntie, Uncle, can Poppy follow you to the beach?"
Calliope’s reply reminded Leslie and Calix of their wish to bring their daughter to enjoy the beach in summer. They swiftly agreed, saying that time would surely come.
Certainly.
After they finished the rest of the picnic foods, Calix and Leslie sent Calliope back to the orphanage. They told the little one about their visit the next morning. Hearing it cast a bright smile on Calliope’s small countenance.
"Pinky promise! Can?"
"Hehe, okay..."
"Me too!"
Calix and Leslie went along as Calliope stuck out her pinky finger. The little turnip head cutely bobbed her head from side to side, singing to a tune.
Before leaving the orphanage, Calix and Leslie talked to Director Li. They simply filled the older woman in about the picnic aside from confirming the meeting time again.
’Tomorrow is the day.’
Calliope’s wish set aside some of Leslie’s concerns about what would come tomorrow. She believed both she and Calix would definitely win over their daughter’s heart despite the possible initial rejections.
"Haa... finally."
Lifting her chin, Leslie turned to look in the direction of the voice. Calix walked into the lounge, still holding his personal phone in his right hand.
"Was it about work?" asked Leslie, wondering what Calix had to say to Edward, "Are there rumors... about your... absence?"
Calix had been away for two days. Leslie couldn’t help but wonder if some of the rumors went rampant.
The busybody staff often had fun talking about their bosses’ private lives, even exaggerating the stories. Such situations occured in all kinds of workplaces.
"Gossipers around, rumors fly around," Calix shrugged, snickering at Leslie with mischief glinting in his eyes, "Well, let’s not focus on that. We have a bigger and more important matter tomorrow."
Throwing himself on the couch, Calix sat next to Leslie. He propped one arm over the backrest, letting his hand dangle just a few centimeters away from her shoulders.
Leslie pursed her lips, fully understanding that Calix’s focus was also on Calliope’s matter.
One of the Xu family’s lawyers—Mrs. Diana Fu—would come as soon as Calliope agreed to follow Calix and Leslie. The talented female attorney would handle everything involving the legal aspects.
Calliope was the Xu spouses’ biological child. Even though the process was not as difficult as adopting a child, Calix didn’t want to leave any loopholes.
Director Li would be there alongside the spouses and the little girl. Even though Calliope enjoyed being with Leslie and Calix, she still needed the director’s presence when the revelation finally happened.
"Are you worried?" asked Leslie, her tone trembling slightly. She unconsciously tightened her grasp on the throw pillow.
"Yes, I’m worried."
Calix nodded without any hesitation. Placing his gaze on her countenance, he saw a similar concern swirling in her eyes.
Being able to reunite with their long-lost child brought pure delight to both Calix and Leslie. But, they also couldn’t ignore the looming fear and uncertainty.
Calliope would be introduced to a world very contrasting to the one she lived in now. Calix and Leslie often discussed what they should do during the transition period.
Neither of them wanted to pressure their precious daughter with anything. They even decided to delay introducing the little one to the Xu family’s main branch.
If Calliope said she wasn’t ready to meet anyone, so be it. Her comfort was Calix and Leslie’s topmost priority.
"We’ll be fine," Calix repeated solemnly, trying to reassure Leslie, "We will."
Leslie hummed softly, followed by a nod.
"Yes, we will..."
Calix and Leslie didn’t talk much after that. Sitting side by side on the couch with only a few centimeters of a gap, they simply enjoyed each other’s company in silence.
More thoughts about Calliope came to their minds. Both of them tried to settle their tensed nerves down, reluctant to let their worries consume their joy.
Soon, it was time for bed. Calix helped Leslie to her bedroom before Mrs. Su took over.
"Get as much sleep as you can, Leslie," advised Calix before leaving Leslie’s bedroom, "Have a good dream."
"You too, Calix..."
Leslie wanted to say more but, no words came out of her mouth. She quietly watched Calix disappearing behind the door. The echoes of his footsteps faded gradually.
Tomorrow.
Tomorrow was the long-awaited moment they had been waiting for.
