Chapter 247: The Only Woman For Him
Soon, Calix arrived at the Italian restaurant. The chauffeur dropped him off before going away, either waiting at someplace nearby or returning to Xu International. He told the younger man to do as he saw fit.
Office workers from the nearby areas filled the restaurant, enjoying their lunch after a busy morning. Seeing neither Xander nor Davin had arrived, Calix asked one of the waiters where the reserved table was.
"Please come this way, mister."
The waiter led Calix to a table next to the glass-paneled walls in the back, quite secluded from other patrons. The former served him some plain water before resuming his job.
Slipping his hands into the pocket of his pants, Calix leaned comfortably against the chair’s backrest. He turned toward the glass wall, silently watching the passersby and vehicles moving outside.
’The food here is good. A bit different from the ones in Rome. Still, I think she’ll love it.’
Calix hadn’t brought Leslie out to any restaurant after she regained consciousness. He suggested it twice but, she said she wasn’t comfortable eating out even in a private dining room.
’Maybe I can try asking her again. She’s in a better condition now than before. Oh, should I take her for a car ride tonight?’
As Calix was immersed in his thoughts about Leslie, he didn’t notice Xander and Davin appearing at the door. He also didn’t realize some eyes—mostly from ladies—were on him from the beginning he entered the eatery.
Knock! Knock!
The sound pulled Calix out of his trance. Taking his eyes off the glass wall, he found Xander already sitting in front of him while Davin pulled out the chair to be seated.
"Happy to see me?" asked Calix, curling his lips into a smirk, "You’ve been bugging me for days ah."
"You’re so hard to reach nowadays," Davin complained with a dose of humor in his tone, "Too busy with your wife? Hehe, where did you bring her yesterday? Oh! Happy belated birthday, buddy."
"I’m one year older now," Calix grabbed the glass of water, twirling it slightly, "I haven’t received my wedding gift. Include it together with my birthday gift, okay?"
"Hah! You’re still asking for gifts at this age?"
Davin called for a waiter. After placing their orders, the friends continued talking. Xander finally spoke for the first time.
"We should plan another celebration for you," said Xander after taking a sip of his water, his husky voice monotonous, "If you don’t want it at Viluxs, we can do it elsewhere."
Calix shrugged, expressing his disapproval, "No need for a celebration ah. This is enough for me."
"Bring your wife along. We haven’t met our sister-in-law," Davin chimed in, snickering at Calix, "Are you hiding her away, huh? I wanna introduce myself to her."
"She’s still recuperating," Calix quickly gave the most plausible excuse. Putting the glass down, he said, "My father will take over my seat for a while starting next week. I gonna bring my wife to see some specialists."
"Huh? What happened?" Davin gasped, shocked by Calix’s words. He hastily asked, "Did her condition worsen? Are you going abroad?"
Xander raised his brows, seemingly interested in learning about the issue as well. Calix didn’t respond immediately. He held back from laughing at his two friends.
"She shows some improvements than before. But, we’re seeking options if we can get better treatments. My parents encourage us to do that. Actually, it’s Grandma’s idea to have my dad step in."
Calix swiftly sold his grandmother’s and parents’ names in this conversation. Xander and Davin would instinctively understand his family was also involved in this decision.
"Seems like your family treats her well."
Xander opened his mouth again, ending his sentence prematurely. Narrowing his eyes, the look in his dark orbs was unfathomable.
Raising his brows, Calix happily replied, "Everyone likes Leslie. Eve hasn’t met her tho. No worries, surely she’ll like her new sister-in-law too."
Davin glanced from Calix to Xander, silently hoping no cold war broke out between his friends after what happened at Viluxs a few weeks ago. He had repeatedly reminded Xander not to say anything that would spoil Calix’s mood today.
’Please, ah. Let’s be civil.’
Xander continued staring at the smiling Calix but, no words came out from his mouth anymore. After what seemed like a long time, he nodded once before pulling his gaze away.
Calix also said nothing. Shifting his focus to Davin, he casually started another conversation. He acted as if he didn’t notice Xander’s subtle objection involving Leslie.
There was no need for a war of words unless Xander openly voiced out his disagreement like before. Calix also knew he didn’t have to act disgracefully if the situation didn’t call for it.
Despite having a slight tension in the air, the trio’s lunch went smoothly. Calix mostly talked to Davin while Xander remained the listener.
"I have to go now," Calix glanced at his wristwatch after finishing his food and drink, "Edward brings forward some of my schedule. See you guys later."
The time was five minutes after the one-hour mark. Calix needed to rush back to the company now. If he wanted to return home like usual, he had to do some cramming.
"Ah, so soon?" Davin frowned. Putting down his fork and knife, he grumbled, "Urgh, what to do? You’re simply busier nowadays."
"I’ll contact you guys once I’m less busy. I can’t promise when tho. Bye-bye."
Rising to his feet, Calix waved one hand at Davin and Xander. He didn’t bother speaking more than necessary with the latter, not in the mood to entertain Xander’s broodiness.
Tsk, this brat dragged him out for this meal but, he couldn’t even act a bit decently?
"Bye, tell us when you’re going away ah. Don’t just keep it quiet," warned Davin, almost putting both of his hands on his hips.
"Yeah, yeah. Thanks for the meal."
Spinning on his heels, Calix hurriedly walked out of the restaurant. The chauffeur had just returned. The younger man pulled the car right on the roadside opposite the eatery.
"Go back to the company" ordered Calix once he entered the car.
"Yes, CEO Xu."
Sensing vibrations from his phone, Calix fished it out of his jacket pocket. He initially thought a text came from either Leslie or Edward but, the sender was Davin.
’A private message. About what this time?’
Tapping on the screen, Davin’s text was displayed on the screen. Calix’s curiosity changed to bewilderment.
[Davin: Aish! I didn’t have the chance to talk to you personally ah]
[Davin: I’m saying this just because, okay? No hidden motive!]
[Davin: No wonder Xander brought up Aria before. I heard she’s coming back soon. Maybe he thought you’d get in touch with that woman again]
[Davin: I’m just saying this, okay? Don’t be mad at me ah]
Blinking, perplexity overtook Calix. He had never expected to learn such news from Davin.
Aria would return soon?
But, even if the news was true, why did Xander act like that?
Frowning, Calix exhaled a sigh. His head throbbed slightly. Swiftly tapping on the screen, he replied to Davin’s messages.
[Calix: Don’t mind Xander or the news. Leslie is my wife. She’s the only woman for me. My only partner. I don’t need any reminder of my past]
Without hesitating, Calix sent the text to Davin. Discomfort swirled in his darkened orbs.
