Chapter 245: Weren’t You the School Grass?

"Are you tired?"

Faint laughter laced Calix’s voice. His question earned a chuckle from Leslie. She didn’t notice how the man’s gaze softened as he locked his eyes on her countenance.

"Yes... But, I’m so relieved..."

Calix and Leslie had just returned from the Xu family’s ancestral home. They had a pleasant dinner with Old Madam Xu, Andrian and Harper. All three of them assured the spouses of their indefinite support.

"I’ll consult with Edward about my schedule," said Calix as he carried Leslie to the couch in her bedroom, "Hopefully, we can go to Calliope before this week ends."

"Don’t be hasty... I know you’re busy..." Leslie advised Calix, not wanting him to overwork himself in the process, "Now that Grandma, Mother and... Father know, we have less... pressure for our... plan..."

"I’ll do that. Don’t worry ah."

Calix carefully lowered Leslie on the couch before taking his hands away from her petite frame. Instead of immediately leaving the bedroom, he threw himself on the seat next to her.

"Aside from rearranging my schedule, I’ll look into a residence there," said Calix, referring to the place where they would reside temporarily, "It’ll be better if it’s closer to the orphanage."

Despite being a small town, Frostwich Town was blessed with a good economy. Local and foreign tourists alike often dropped by there for a short visit before continuing their journey to the neighboring towns.

"I’ll just follow your... arrangements... Hehe, it’s great to be... a salted fish sometimes... You handle everything while I... can be lazy..."

Calix scoffed, pretending to glare at Leslie. She continued laughing, expressing how light her heart was now.

In actuality, both of them had already expected their discussions with Old Madam Xu, Andrian and Harper would bring positivity. Yet, their tensed nerves were inclined to think of the worst.

The Xu family’s matriarch and Calix’s parents promised to keep Calliope’s existence and their plan a secret. None of them wanted anything to go wrong.

"As much as we want to see our grandchild, we won’t force you to introduce her to us. The child needs to settle in with you two first."

Andrian’s words and Harper’s reassurance delighted Leslie and Calix. The middle-aged spouses’ understanding warmed their hearts.

Then, Calix openly told Leslie, his parents and his grandmother about his next step after bringing Calliope into their family safely. He was adamant about settling scores with the Li family.

Harper chimed in, expressing her disdain toward Old Madam Li, Rowan and Bianca.

"We’re angry ah but, remember to ask Charlene about it. Don’t do anything without discussing it between you two. She’s the most affected party here."

Old Madam Xu and Andrian vehemently agreed with Harper’s opinion. They didn’t want Calix to do anything that could strain his relationship with Leslie.

Even though the Li family treated Leslie cruelly, the matter regarding hearts and familial bonds was always delicate.

All in all, Calix and Leslie received the utmost support from the three people much to their relief.

"Shouldn’t you go to... bed?" Leslie took in the faint lines of exhaustion marring Calix’s countenance. Her smile softened, "We’ve been out... since morning..."

The clock was pointing to nine-thirty. The time was actually still early but, what happened today was enough to drain them physically and mentally.

Calix blinked. Despite realizing Leslie was simply being concerned for him, he still felt a bit disappointed hearing that.

"Well... can’t I stay here longer? I won’t interrupt you," Calix paused, remembering something else, "Ah, sorry. You’re tired too. I’ll call Mrs. Su to help you."

Calix really wished to be near Leslie’s presence longer but, he shouldn’t disturb her resting time. Like him, she was also tired from today’s events.

Leslie chuckled, sensing how flustered Calix was. Seeing him like this made her want to tease him but, she held back. Extending her left hand, she grabbed the hem of his right sleeve.

"You can sit there... I don’t want to... sleep yet..."

Calix blankly stared at Leslie’s finger tugging his sleeve before his eyes returned to her smiling countenance. The mellowness in her gaze silently charmed him into abiding by her words.

"Okay..."

Lowering his eyes, Calix randomly stared at the carpet under his slippered feet. He faintly sensed Leslie taking her hand off his sleeve.

A rush of heat swirled to his ears at that particular moment, making him more conscious of the short distance between them.

"Calix, what kind of student... were you in high school?"

"...huh?"

Leslie’s question brought Calix’s attention back to her. Turning his chin toward her, he eyed her with confusion.

Laughter bubbled up from Leslie’s mouth. Grinning, she said, "I bet you were popular ah... you and your friends... you guys were... the school grasses[01], right?"

"W-what? Hahaha! No ah. Xander was the only school grass. We’re nothing compared to him."

Disbelief flickered in Calix’s eyes. He didn’t know from where Leslie heard such a thing.

Leslie giggled, trying to recall the small details she had read about Xander’s school days in the novel. As the male lead, he was the most popular male student, followed by his cliques.

Hehe, just like the famous youth drama.

If Xander was the number one, Calix was the first runner-up. Davin and their other friend should be in the third and fourth places.

"Don’t lie ah..." Leslie chuckled, amused by Calix’s attempt to hide his fame during high school days, "I heard Mother and Grandma... talked about it earlier..."

Calix and Andrian had a private conversation before dinner. Old Madam Xu and Harper entertained Leslie when the men were away.

The excited Harper opened up a little about Calix’s school days. She proudly admitted how famous her second son was throughout kindergarten to university.

Calix was speechless, never expecting Harper and Old Madam Xu to air his embarrassing school years to Leslie during his absence.

Sigh...

How could he forget ah? Whether he was there or not, his mother and grandmother wouldn’t think twice about bringing up his past.

"T-then, how about you? Weren’t you the school flower? My wife is as beautiful as a goddess. Shouldn’t you be one?"

Blinking, Leslie burst out laughing after a momentary pause. Her shoulders shook as the echo of her giggles filled the air.

"What?" Calix raised his brows, wondering what was so funny, "Hey, I’m speaking the truth ah. I didn’t make fun of you."

"Hehe..." Leslie rubbed her teary right eye. Calix’s words genuinely tickled her heart, "Then... does it mean you think... I’m on goddess-level beautiful?"

"Yes! Everyone can tell you’re beautiful ah."

Calix replied without missing a beat. He didn’t notice how red his face had been as he spoke those words out loud.

"Hehehe... thank you, I appreciate that..."

Leslie continued laughing but, Calix didn’t feel offended by her reaction. A helpless smile was drawn on his lips instead, expressing the subtle signs of his infatuation for her.

He had encountered thousands of beauties but, no one shone the brightest like her.

Why?

Because his heart only belonged to her.
