Chapter 243: If Angels Lived on the Clouds

Chapter 243: If Angels Lived on the Clouds

"Even if you can’t leave the past behind, expect how bright your future days will be from now on. Not only you but, Calliope too."

Lying alone on the double-seat rattan swing chair on the balcony, Leslie replayed Calix’s previous remarks in her mind. Blinking, she sensed her eyes and cheeks heating.

What he said effortlessly entranced her, rendering her speechless. She said nothing in reply, only responding to him with a slight smile.

’I want to believe in his words.’

Leslie clasped her hands together, placing them over her chest. She perceived warmth gushing out of her heart, inwardly blanketing her with a sense of comfort.

Slightly tilting her chin up, Leslie threw her eyes to the blue sky where puffy white clouds drifted by. She had been seeing this kind of scenery from childhood yet, it was always wonderful to her.

"Do angels live there? On the clouds?"

"Their white castles must be gorgeous! Can they take me there?"

"I want to live there... can’t I, Miss Angel?"

When Leslie was a child, she often wondered if angels resided on the clouds. She hoped they would spirit her away to their white castles, leaving behind her incessantly angry parents and bratty younger brother.

Yet, her wishes didn’t come true. She also learned that nothing lived on the white clouds.

’In the end, I got spirited away to this world instead. Long after I turned into an adult.’

Chuckling to herself, Leslie fondly reminisced her childhood memories. She rarely did so because she lacked the happy ones. Most of them were filled with her parents’ beratement and her brother’s mockery.

Leslie shifted her focus to something else, unwilling to be swept up by her previous life’s memories. Her heartbeat sped up again once she imagined facing Andrian and Harper later.

The middle-aged spouses were already here.

Not long after Calix attempted to continue giving her reassurance, Andrian and Harper arrived. Following the former, Leslie went downstairs to greet her parents-in-law.

Old Madam Xu was also there. She gave her opinions after welcoming his son and daughter-in-law back.

"You two look tired ah. Why don’t you take a breather before these youngsters talk to you?"

Andrian and Harper understood this meant Old Madam Xu had learned about the issue that led to Calix’s surprise visit today. Neither of them pressed their son as they agreed with the matriarch.

"Let’s have tea time outside. We can talk there. How about that?"

Calix and Leslie swiftly agreed with Andrian’s proposal. They also had no problems with Old Madam Xu’s earlier suggestion, thinking this was the best.

Andrian and Harper went out right after breakfast. Neither Calix nor Leslie knew where they had been going but, it was clear the middle-aged spouses appeared weary slightly.

Thus, all of them parted ways for the time being. They should meet at the pavilion by the pond in one hour and a half.

Calix brought Leslie back to his bedroom while Andrian and Harper went to theirs. Old Madam Xu wanted to spend some time in the greenhouse. A helper escorted her there.

After Calix helped Leslie to sit on the swing chair, he went out again. Edward suddenly called the young man, most probably it was work-related.

Leslie guessed Edward was purposely drowning himself in work even on the weekend.

The competent assistant would be away for his two-week summer vacation this mid-June. He might be busier completing his tasks while delegating some to his subordinates.

Shaking her head slightly, Leslie closed her eyes. She wasn’t sleepy but, the gently passing breeze made her drowsy.

’It’s okay. He’ll wake me up if I’m asleep.’

Not even trying to fight away her sleepiness, Leslie curled up on the swing chair, sleeping. The rustling of the leaves echoed in the air, singing her a soft lullaby.

Calix returned to the bedroom thirty minutes later. Breathing out a sigh, he recalled the phone call he received from Edward. The conversation took almost forty-five minutes.

"I bet he’ll sleep in the office tonight ah. That workaholic... aish."

Sighing once again, Calix knew his imagination wouldn’t stray far. Edward spent his weekend in the office. The young man intended to finish as many tasks as he could himself instead of passing them to his subordinates.

Any boss like Calix appreciated Edward’s exemplary work ethic. But, he still didn’t want his most trusted aid to be married to his job.

Hurm, should he set Edward up for blind dates?

Calix rejected the idea as soon as it emerged in his mind. Doing so meant he was just like his old grandmother. He was exhausted fending off her attempts before he decided to marry Leslie.

Well, not everyone desires romance ah. Someone like Edward was more inclined to fulfill his career ambitions first instead of looking for romance at the same time.

Shrugging, Calix decided not to dwell too much into his close aid’s private life.

Edward would start looking for romance if he wished for it. Or, if Aunt Wendy and Uncle Raymond began being more vocal about his lack of love life.

"Leslie, are you bored?"

Stepping closer to the balcony, Calix called for Leslie. His earlier intention to lie on the swing chair with her was interrupted by Edward’s phone call.

Not getting any response from Leslie, Calix quickened his pace. He raised his brows once he realized she was sleeping.

"Someone is enjoying her nap ah."

Calix stepped closer, only stopping two feet away from the swing chair. Leslie was deep in her nap, prompting him to think when she fell asleep.

Calix grabbed the throw blanket lying next to Leslie. After unfolding it, he covered her with the fabric. Not wanting to disturb her nap, he simply sat cross-legged on the balcony floor.

’At least, she doesn’t overthink. She really reacted better than I’d expected.’

Calix traced his memories back to last night. Sometimes, he found it hard to realize he and Leslie had gone past the most important and difficult phase – bringing up the subject of six years ago.

Silently staring at Leslie, Calix inwardly chuckled as he recalled how unsightly for him to cry so hard in front of her last night. Still, he appreciated her genuine concern. Never once did she make fun of him or even express her resentment.

’I’ll treat her well. I will treat Leslie and Calliope well, even better than before.’

Curling up his lips, Calix cemented the vow into his heart.

Leslie continued napping without a care for the world. As for Calix, he had fun taking her photos. Chuckling, he wanted to show these to her soon.

What kind of reaction would she show to him?

"..oh?"

Calix read a message sent by Andrian. His parents were going to the pavilion now with his grandmother.

The time had come.

Slowly standing up, Calix replied to Andrian’s text. He slipped the phone inside his pants pocket before moving closer to Leslie.

"Leslie, it’s time."

Gently patting Leslie’s right shoulder, Calix tried to wake her up. He quietly watched her eyelashes fluttering before a pair of almond eyes were staring back at him.

"...it’s time already?" asked Leslie, her voice slightly hoarse.

"En, it’s time."

Time for their next step.
