Chapter 230: The Memories Disguised as Dreams Didn’t End There

T/W: Attempted suicide

----------

"H-hah!"

Sucking in a sharp breath, Leslie jolted awake. Her chest moved up and down quickly and successively. Her widened eyes expressed horror, terrified by what she had just seen—or rather, experienced—in her sleep.

"W-what... was that?"

Leslie randomly grasped the blanket, feeling how her back soaking in sweat. Shaking her head in disbelief, she perceived the intense shivering of her hands, originating from the fear and surprise in her heart.

"What time is it now..."

Leslie threw her gaze to the bedside table, looking at the small clock standing next to the rose bouquet table lamp. The faint white and pink lights cast a glow in the nearby area, allowing her to clearly see the clock.

03:10 AM.

"Haa... it’s still... early..."

Leslie went to bed nearing eleven. Her talk with Calix earlier and the rest kept her mind awake but, she still ended up going to sleep. Never did she expect to relive some of Charlene’s experiences in her dreams.

The vividness of those events frightened Leslie to the core, her stomach churning. Compared to before, what she encountered in her dreams just now was among the worst moments in Charlene’s life.

"That day... she got the idea... to end herself..." murmured Leslie. The hoarseness of her voice carried the trembling of her heart.

As if she was trapped inside Charlene’s body, Leslie also silently watched the pond when Charlene began wondering how to cease her misery by...

Drowning out of her free will.

Leslie shouted, trying to redivert Charlene’s focus from those dark thoughts but, everything was futile. She could do nothing because she was simply reliving Charlene’s history.

’So... so helpless... She thought she had no other choice.’

Charlene was backed into a corner. With no one on her side, dying seemed to be less painful compared to living.

Leslie unconsciously tightened her hands on the blanket. Frowning, beads of sweat trickled down from her forehead to the pillow underneath her head.

’I also saw... what happened next...’

The memories disguised as dreams didn’t end there.

Leslie also witnessed the moments Charlene tried drowning herself in the bathtub after swallowing a huge number of sleeping pills. The latter possessed the medications because of her insomnia.

No one had ever thought she would use them in an attempt to cease living.

"Mrs. Wang..." whispered Leslie, tears pooling in her eyes, "...she saved her..."

If not for Mrs. Wang, Charlene’s life would certainly end on that night.

Leslie remembered how Mrs. Wang was the only one showing a glimpse of kindness to Charlene. She wanted Mrs. Jiang and the others to treat the young lady better but, she received stern warnings in return.

Mrs. Jiang forced Mrs. Wang to withdraw to the background, forbidding the latter to interact with Charlene. But, fate had another story.

"I couldn’t see what... happened..." Leslie sighed in helplessness, "Only learned from... the people’s story..."

Because Leslie bore Charlene’s point of view, she couldn’t witness the moment Mrs. Wang saved the young lady. The details came from Charlene’s future memories.

On that particular night, Mrs. Wang came to deliver Charlene’s dinner under a colleague’s demand. The latter didn’t feel well. She ordered Mrs. Wang nearby to take care of the task.

Mrs. Wang felt something was amiss once she stepped inside the bedroom. She carefully called Charlene but, the young lady didn’t answer her even once.

The terrified Mrs. Wang found Charlene unconscious inside the bathtub. She quickly pulled the latter out while screaming for help. Two bodyguards barged into the washroom and discovered the horrifying scene.

Charlene was immediately sent to the hospital. The doctor urgently pumped her stomach, doing his best to rescue her from Death’s door. Fortunately, he succeeded.

’After a long time... Rowan and Bianca finally came.’

Leslie recalled the time Charlene was still hospitalized.

Instead of sympathizing with the depressed young lady, Mrs. Jiang viciously scolded Charlene. She only toned it down when Rowan and Bianca suddenly appeared after receiving the news of their daughter’s suicide attempt.

Charlene was not happy at all seeing Rowan and Bianca despite it being their first time meeting each other in months. She lashed out, screaming and demanding her parents to leave.

Saying the situation was messy was an understatement.

Leslie closed her eyes, trying to gather her thoughts after going through such dreams. She didn’t know what caused Charlene’s memories to resurface when she was sleeping earlier.

"No one should blame her... for losing hope... on her parents..."

Charlene withdrew herself from the world, including Rowan and Bianca who tried talking to her. Because of her mental instability, the doctor didn’t force her to do anything she didn’t want to.

"Why didn’t you let me... die?"

Charlene asked Mrs. Wang that question once. It happened shortly after Rowan and Bianca left in disappointment. The helper came to check on the young lady, anxiously worrying about her.

"You’d waste your life... dying for the likes of them. Miss Charlene, don’t you want to be reunited with your daughter ever again?"

Mrs. Wang’s words struck Charlene’s heart. The middle-aged woman gently cradled her as she broke down into tears. Her cries and words of sorrow darkened the private ward’s ambiance.

For the first time ever, Charlene felt as if someone truly understood her. Ironically, that person didn’t share even a drop of blood with her.

From that moment on, Charlene grew closer to Mrs. Wang. She also cemented her vow to break free from the Li family’s clutch no matter how much sacrifice and time it took.

’Turned out... Charlene planned her escape and ways to look for her child. But...’

Charlene was discharged after two weeks. The doctor ordered her to strictly follow what she had been told, including coming for regular check-ups.

Since Charlene’s release, more people had been tasked to watch over her movement. She also lost her freedom in her bedroom as one or two people would be assigned to stay there even during her sleeping time.

Charlene was mentally exhausted but, there was nothing she could do. She braced everything for her future freedom.

Because of her attempted suicide, Old Madam Li didn’t rescind her order even after Charlene returned to Silvercrest City. The young lady was still under watch, no matter where she went.

Her journey to freedom was indeed a tumultuous one.

’I need to check her other diaries. There should be more mentions of her findings.’

Charlene tried as discreet as she could when looking for her daughter. But, any attempt was swiftly sniffed out by the secret watchers. They reported her movements to Old Madam Li, earning rage from the vicious old woman.

"Your bastard is dead! DEAD! If you try this again, I’ll kick you out!"

Unwilling to make any risky moves, Charlene persuaded herself to be more patient.

Being kicked out of the Li family didn’t mean freedom would come her way. She knew her grandmother would still keep tabs on her every move.

After four years, Old Madam Li gradually loosened her supervision. It was late but, Charlene started taking her first crucial moves.

Discreetly accumulating her wealth and looking for her daughter.

But, her plans were cut short by the staircase incident.
