Chapter 228: Her Sorrow Gnawed Into Her Battered Soul
T/W: Mention of attempted suicide
----------
Lying alone on the bed, Leslie let her eyes wander to the ceiling. The orange lights cast a faint glow on her countenance. The frowning of her brows expressed concern brewing in her mind.
’She almost ended herself once. That... showed how severe her situation was.’
The memories related to Charlene’s confinement six years ago were tainted with misery. Leslie couldn’t help but wonder if this was the reason she couldn’t sync her memories well with the ones belonging to Charlene.
Grasping the blanket hard, Leslie calmed herself before she let those memories resurface. She particularly brought up the ones after Calliope’s abrupt disappearance from Charlene’s side.
The more Leslie immersed herself in those heartbreaking memories, the more immense her heartache was.
"W-where’s my child? Where’s Calliope?"
Charlene’s strained voice echoed in Leslie’s mind. As if she went through the event herself, Leslie sensed her weak body trying to crawl down the bed using what little left of energy after an exhausting labor.
"My child... please! Where is she?"
Charlene’s panic overtook Leslie’s heart, forcing herself to quickly stabilize her emotions. She needed to go through these memories with a calm mind if she wanted to learn more about Charlene’s suffering.
Leslie quietly watched the two middle-aged women who appeared in Charlene’s memory. One of them appeared tensed while the other had a stern look on her face.
Mrs. Wang and Mrs. Jiang. Those two names came to Leslie’s mind, courtesy of Charlene’s knowledge.
"Do you want to kill yourself? Just stay in bed! Don’t make things hard on us ah!"
Shouting in anger, Mrs. Jiang showed no shred of sympathy to Charlene. She stomped her feet hard, rushing to the frail new mother who tried leaving the bed.
"My child! Give my child back! Please!"
Charlene cried out of desperation as she weakly struggled against Mrs. Jiang’s pushing. Mrs. Wang ran forward, trying to pull the other older woman from the new mother.
"Get off her! What are you doing? She has just given birth!"
Mrs. Jiang shoved Mrs. Wang away, clearly enraged by the latter’s interference.
"She doesn’t know her place! No one here cares for her!"
Mrs. Jiang pushed Charlene for the last time before rashly leaving the room. She tumbled on the bed, pain flaring all over her body.
"M-miss Charlene!"
Through Charlene’s hazy gaze, Leslie watched Mrs. Wang’s contorted countenance. The middle-aged woman hurriedly helped the former to lay properly on the bed.
"Mrs. Wang... please... where’s my child?"
Charlene’s pleas tore Leslie’s heart into pieces, reminding her of the time she carried Calliope’s lifeless body in her arms. The former’s immense sorrow took a toll on her mind but, she forced herself to continue living the memory.
Mrs. Wang’s orbs reddened, lips trembling. Guilt and sadness overflowed from her eyes, her grasp on Charlene’s body weakening.
"I’m sorry... they... they took your baby away... No one knows where..."
What happened next surprised both Leslie and Mrs. Wang.
"L-let me go! Let me find her! My child! Please, my child!"
Charlene painstakingly pushed Mrs. Wang away. She dragged her body from the bed, ignoring the intense ache erupting from her lower abdomen. She tried to evade when the older woman tried getting her back to lie.
"Miss! Don’t do this! You’re endangering yourself! Please!"
Mrs. Wang’s cries fell on Charlene’s deaf ears. She was determined to get out of this damn wretched place and find her newly born daughter.
But...
"ARGH!"
"MISS!"
Charlene tumbled on the floor from the bed during her struggle against Mrs. Wang. The latter hurriedly got her but, it was already too late.
Red blood marked its territory on the floor.
Leslie saw black as Charlene fainted. She winced as the onslaught of the latter’s aches also spread through her senses.
’This was... too much...’
Shuddering, Leslie forced herself out of Charlene’s memories. Cold sweat broke on her back, dampening the fabric of her nightgown.
’Too much... too cruel...’
Leslie ran her hand over her eyes, feeling the wetness of her eyelashes tainted with tears. Shaking her head, she coerced herself to calm down instead of succumbing to Charlene’s despair.
Mimo had told Leslie a few times before about getting her and Charlene’s feelings into one. Even though she managed to control most of them, there might be a few cases where she could not.
’Let’s think about it again.’
Leslie skimmed over the surface as she didn’t want to immerse herself completely in Charlene’s heartwrenching memories. The pain made it hard for her to separate herself from the latter’s own being.
’She was sent to the hospital. Then... she got isolated from other people...’
Charlene lost a lot of blood following her fall from the bed. Once she woke up, she found herself inside a private hospital room. Only Mrs. Wang was with her.
Despite her fragile state, Charlene kept asking about her newborn daughter. Mrs. Wang tearfully asked her to think and take care of herself first. Her mental health would plummet more if she didn’t do so.
But...
Charlene couldn’t and wouldn’t stop inquiring about her child, resulting in her being reprimanded by Mrs. Jiang who held power in the holiday home.
Mrs. Jiang barged into the hospital room, clearly annoyed by Charlene’s woes. Without feeling any pity toward the new mother, she threatened Charlene.
"We’ve gotten rid of that bastard! Don’t you dare look for her! Old Madam Li won’t stand still if you go against her! You’ll be locked up here until you learn your lessons!"
Since then, more eyes followed the unfortunate woman.
Charlene was not allowed to go out of the hospital room during the entire week of her hospitalization. Two bodyguards stood outside, preventing her from leaving.
Once Charlene was discharged, her world was only inside the bedroom. She was barred from stepping out even to the hallway. The situation only changed after one month.
At that time, Charlene was strong enough to walk and do other physical activities. Sadly, her sorrow kept gnawing into her battered soul, slowly eating her life away.
One day, Charlene decided to end it all.
