Chapter 221: She Was Bound to Be Surprised No Matter What

Leslie and Calix didn’t talk much during their ride home. Both of them were exhausted from spending more energy than usual playing with the children. Yet, one could say none of them regretted going to the orphanage.

Leslie took a quick nap on the flight while Calix was still wide awake. He kept recalling every moment he spent with Leslie and Calliope earlier.

Really, he didn’t expect to receive anything from the little one.

Calix handed the box storing Calliope’s precious pebbles to Logan for safekeeping. It was placed together with the gifts presented by Director Li.

’Perhaps we can do something with the stones.’

Calix was reminded of the beautiful pebbles and seashells crafts done by Lucille for Amelia. His sister-in-law usually used them to make planters, accented decors and small jewelry.

Calix intended to talk about turning Calliope’s pebbles into something with Leslie before proceeding with anything.

Of course, the talk was not as important as what he planned to tell her tonight.

Calix, Leslie and their entourage reached Mapleview Hills before six. He dismissed everyone including Mrs. An who followed them to the orphanage. All of them were as tired as them.

"Welcome back, Mr. Calix and Mrs. Leslie. Did you have fun?"

Aunt Wendy cheerily greeted Calix and Leslie at the front door. Uncle Raymond was nowhere to be seen.

Perhaps he was preoccupied with the yard work. The middle-aged man boasted about decorating the garden with new topiaries to welcome summer soon.

Aunt Wendy and Uncle Raymond knew where Calix and Leslie were heading to today. But, they simply thought the spouses wanted to do charity by holding a party at an orphanage.

"We had fun..." Leslie merrily replied to Aunty Wendy. Above her exhausted countenance was a layer of delightful glow, "The children... were so adorable... Hehe, we played and ate... a lot..."

Calix smilingly watched Leslie and Aunt Wendy’s interaction. He pushed the wheelchair forward as the ladies kept talking. Their chatter echoed in the hallway leading to the lounge.

"They loved the cake... and the games prepared... I played in the... pool ball with the children... Oh! Look! I got some... temporary tattoos..."

Leslie showed the prints on her arm, earning chuckles from Aunt Wendy.

"I got them too."

Rolling the long sleeve up to his elbow, Calix also did the same. His action made Aunt Wendy laugh more.

"Seems like both of you really enjoyed the trip. That’s good. You should do that more."

Aunt Wendy’s gaze mellowed. She was glad to see the similar joy and contentment expressed by the spouses despite looking physically worn out.

"We plan to go to the beach this coming summer," Calix still remembered his promise to Leslie before, "Leslie can stand a bit longer now. Perhaps, she can already walk when it’s time for the summer getaway."

Leslie noticed hope tingeing Calix’s voice. Each of his words gently brushed her heart, inadvertently colored her smile with a hint of shyness.

"That’s a good plan! Mr. Calix, you’ve been busy with work. Mrs. Leslie hasn’t been to anywhere much too. If you can, have a longer vacation. Edward said he’ll be away for two weeks. Is it true?"

Calix clicked his tongue. It seemed like Edward had been showing off about his future summer vacation to his aunt and uncle.

"I told him to go and find a girlfriend," Calix shrugged, recalling how annoyingly smug Edward was when he bragged about his vacation, "But, I doubt it ah. He’d rather bring back a coconut tree than a girlfriend."

Leslie and Aunt Wendy burst into laughter. They couldn’t help but wonder how Edward would react if he ever heard his boss complaining about his non-existent love life.

Calix brought Leslie upstairs while Aunt Wendy went to the kitchen. None of them felt like having heavy meals for dinner. The middle-aged lady said she would prepare some soup and bread.

While carrying Leslie to the bed, Calix asked, "Mrs. Su should arrive soon. Is there anything I can do? Want me to prepare the tub? I can call Aunt Wendy to help you."

Mrs. An assisted Leslie to the toilet at the airport lounge earlier. He heard her talking about how much she wanted to soak in a bath once they arrived home.

Playing under the sun for hours made one feel uncomfortable.

Leslie pondered for a moment before shaking her head. Chuckling, she verbally refused, "Thanks but, no... I can wait for Mrs. Su... I’ll just... relax before she comes..."

Calix had prepared the bath for Leslie a few times before. But, she didn’t feel like calling Aunt Wendy to help her after he left. The older lady should be busy cooking now.

"If you say so," Calix nodded once, lowering Leslie to the mattress, "Take your rest. Wanna have dinner a bit later than usual?"

"Sounds nice... I might take a short nap... again..."

Leslie was still full from the party. Her eyelids also kept drooping, urging her to get some shut-eye. She should think about eating after getting her share of rest.

"En, do that. I’ll nap too."

Covering Leslie with a blanket, Calix made sure she was comfortable in bed before stepping out of the bedroom. He glanced at his wristwatch, finding that the time had just hit fifteen minutes after six.

’I don’t think I can sleep.’

Exhaling a sigh, Calix put both hands inside the pockets of his pants. His footsteps sounded heavy as he walked down the hallway, heading to his bedroom.

With frowns marring his forehead, Calix tried envisioning how tonight would be. He had been rearranging words in his mind, wondering what was the best way to begin.

Yet, Leslie was bound to be surprised no matter what.

Once Calix entered the bedroom, he quickly shut the door before hurrying rushed to his bed. He unlocked the bedside drawer, bringing out the familiar envelope. His expression turned gloomier.

These DNA results...

Leslie would finally be aware of their existence tonight.
