Chapter 211: The Original Storyline Crafted by the Author
That night, sleep didn’t come easily to Leslie. Aside from recalling the pleasant moments she experienced during the family meal, she also kept envisioning her first meeting with Calliope tomorrow.
Which was the best way to approach her daughter?
Would she cry right after seeing her little one?
How should she interact with her precious child?
Those thoughts kept Leslie awake. Fortunately, she finally drifted to sleep before the clock struck one in the morning. Her lips remained curled up as good dreams accompanied her sleep.
But...
Leslie was unaware of the darkness lurking beneath. It extended its claws, breaking into her good dreams before replacing them with visions tainted with despair and helplessness.
"What was that..."
Blinking her eyes, Leslie groggily stared at the ceiling above. She caught the sound of her slightly hoarse voice, questioning herself over the nightmare that stirred her awake.
Instead of a dream, it felt more like a memory from a distant past.
"What did I just... dream? Did it happen to... Charlene before?"
Leslie lightly grasped the blanket covering her body. Pursing her lips, she tried to recall what she had just dreamed. It was quite hard because the visions were not too clear.
But...
Bearing Charlene’s point of view, Leslie remembered the sensation of tightly embracing a man as their legs tangled on a bed, sharing their body heat.
’Seems like this is another one of Charlene’s dormant memory. The one that I...’
Leslie turned toward the bedside table. Her gaze quietly landed on the drawer where she kept Charlene’s diaries. Her mind inadvertently recalled one particular entry from six years ago.
"Did the memory come back... because I’m heading there... this morning?"
Was her guess true? About how the author planned the original storyline between Charlene and Calix before she transmigrated?
Then...
"What if Poppy is..."
Biting her lips, a sense of helplessness took over Leslie’s heart. She was unsure whether to be happy or not regarding her assumptions.
Leslie couldn’t imagine the blow on Calix if the truth was aligned with her guesses.
’Stop thinking of the worse. You know how he is.’
Leslie refrained from sighing out her worry. She took a quick look at the clock. The needles were pointing to four-fifteen in the morning. It was still early.
Calix changed their schedule a little. They would head to the airport at seven-thirty instead of six-thirty. The one hour difference was enough for Leslie to continue sleeping.
’Let’s sleep some more. Leslie, stop thinking.’
Slightly shaking her head, Leslie shut her eyes. She didn’t see Mimo anywhere. It might go playing by itself somewhere.
Reluctant to ask the crochet fox toy about what she had just dreamed, Leslie didn’t call Mimo to return to the bedroom.
Unfortunately, Leslie couldn’t sleep anymore. Her active mind defeated her lingering drowsiness. Countless what-ifs and whys kept her mind awake despite her effort to silence them.
Leslie eventually waved the white flag to surrender. She lay on the bed, occasionally changing her positions until Mrs. Su came to wake her up at six. The private nurse would assist her in getting ready as usual.
"Mrs. Xu, you look tired. Couldn’t sleep last night?" asked Mrs. Su while combing Leslie’s hair in front of the vanity mirror.
Mrs. Su’s question earned Leslie’s laughter. Staring at the mirror, she found how sluggish she looked despite freshening herself with a shower.
"Perhaps I’m too excited... for this trip..." Leslie spoke the half-truth, not mentioning what had bothered her sleep last night.
"Hehe, this will be your first trip away with your husband," Mrs. Su chuckled, being happy on behalf of the spouses, "Even though it’s just a day trip, surely you’ll be so excited. Isn’t it?"
"Oh... yes, yes, that’s true..." Leslie smiled awkwardly, feeling bad for lying to Mrs. Su despite not being her intention, "I wonder how the day... will be..."
"Mr. Xu is generous enough to hold his birthday party at the orphanage," responded Mrs. Su happily. She knew where the Xu spouses were heading, "Hehe, I can tell he’ll play so much with the children ah."
Leslie burst out laughing, agreeing with Mrs. Su. The private nurse was already familiar with Calix’s lively nature. He was someone who would challenge the children to play games with him.
"Oho~ Laughing about me ah. Tsk tsk, you’re caught in the act."
Leslie and Mrs. Su froze, never expecting Calix to walk into the ensuite wardrobe. The man breezily made his appearance under the ladies’ stunned looks.
"Why? Are we wrong?" asked Leslie once she regained her composure. She glared at the smirking man, "Mr. Xu, you know yourself..."
"Well, I can’t deny that," shrugging, Calix smiled lopsidedly, "The event planner has set up games for the children. Of course, I need to tag along."
Edward found a great event planner to hold the party at the orphanage, shocking Director Li the first time she heard about it. The planner handled everything – decorating the whole chosen venue, handling food catering, preparing the door gifts and the birthday cake.
Calix didn’t care about having a birthday party for himself or not. He had outgrown that phase decades ago. He only used it as an excuse to spend more time at the orphanage.
"Oh, right, wanna me do your hair?" Calix stepped forward, noticing that Mrs. Su was brushing Leslie’s hair.
"If you’re okay with it..." Leslie replied with a smile.
Mrs. Su swiftly left the wardrobe, leaving the spouses alone. Calix started by continuing to comb Leslie’s hair before sprinkling the hair spray serum as usual.
"Dear customer, which hairstyle do you want?" Calix raised his brows, staring at Leslie’s reflection in the mirror.
"What’s your opinion... Mr. Hairstylist?" Leslie chuckled, roleplaying along with Calix, "I’ll entrust you... with this..."
"Hurm..." Calix pondered for a moment before his eyes twinkled, "A crown braid interlaced with a ribbon. Do you wanna me to braid all your hair? Or let them down too?"
"Let my hair down..."
"Okay."
Calix opened the vanity drawer, retrieving a yellow ribbon. It perfectly matched Leslie’s pastel yellow dress.
Without saying much, Calix started dividing the parts to create the braid while letting the rest cascade behind Leslie’s back. He didn’t realize how intently she was looking at him through the mirror.
Today, CEO Xu discarded his formal suit for a set of casual outfits. He wore a V-neck shirt in the baby blue color, paired with a cream-color jacket and long light gray cargo pants.
"Calix..."
"En?"
At the call of his name, Calix shifted his eyes from Leslie’s hair to her eyes in the mirror. Seeing her smiling lips brought one of his own.
Locking her gaze onto his, Leslie said, "Happy birthday, Calix... I haven’t wished you..."
Leslie initially wanted to wish Calix through a message once midnight struck but, she dropped the idea. She wanted to do it once meeting him today.
"Wow, this year I have a wife to wish me Happy Birthday," Calix grinned, teasing Leslie with a wink, "Hehe, thank you ah, Mrs. Xu."
"I don’t prepare anything... for you..." Leslie sighed in regret, "I’ll get something... once I’m better..."
"It’s fine. You have..." Calix paused before he quickly changed his words, "I mean, you don’t have to. Just have fun with me and the children today."
Calix initially wanted to say Leslie had given him the best birthday present ever – Calliope.
But, it was not the right time.
