Chapter 193: Could They Build Their Family Life Together?
"I think I’ve made a good decision. Isn’t it?"
The echo of Calix’s murmur was only audible to himself. Lying on the mattress of his bedroom, his gaze traced the carvings engraved on the ceiling.
"She looked so happy... I’m glad."
In the silence of the midnight, Calix recalled the rest of his conversation with Leslie that happened earlier. The surprised look on her face was vividly conjured in his mind.
"Did you... just say you want to celebrate... your birthday there? With the... children?"
Calix replied to Leslie’s question with a nod of his head.
"If you feel better, I can bring you to visit the child there. Since we’re at it, I think of throwing a party with the children. It’s the weekend so, we won’t be disturbing their schedule."
As Calix started explaining the reason, Leslie’s bewilderment gradually changed to delight. Pure joy was reflected in her eyes, unknowingly alleviating the tension that suppressed his heart.
"Yes! I want... I want to go there! Thank you, Calix... As long as you’re fine... changing your initial plan... that’s it..."
Calix noticed Leslie’s slight hesitancy behind her cheery countenance. He quickly reassured her that he did this out of his free will.
Thus, both of them had to make some changes to the family meal. Calix planned to bring it forward to Friday because they would head to Frostwich Town in Bridgeland City on the next day.
Calix told Leslie that he would talk to Old Madam Xu about her health tomorrow when he visited the ancestral home. They only had one week to spare thus, they should deal with everything as quickly as possible.
Leslie pondered for a moment before coming up with a suggestion, surprising Calix.
"Tomorrow... what if I follow you along? I think your... grandmother wants to see me... once she hears about me..."
Leslie’s words sounded plausible. Calix knew his elderly grandmother too well.
Haha... aside from smacking his back for concealing such a big matter from her, she would surely want to meet Leslie.
Thus, Calix agreed. He and Leslie planned to visit the Xu family’s ancestral home before noon.
For the rest of the night, Calix and Leslie had dinner by the lake as promised. She kept saying how happy she was to receive the flowers. Aunt Wendy had already put them into a vase.
After returning from the lake, Calix accompanied Leslie resuming her Scrabble game. They spent quite some time before her sleepiness caught up to her.
While she was deep in sleep right now, he was still tormented by countless thoughts.
"Haa... this is not even the important part."
Exhaling a loud sigh, Calix roughly rubbed his hands with both palms. A sense of exhaustion tugged at his fatigued heart and mind, wearying his body.
Within a short time, Calix had made up his mind. He would reveal the truth and ask about her side of the story sometime after she met Calliope.
"I should contact Director Li tomorrow. Yeah, before going to Grandma’s place."
Calix brought his hands down from his face to his chest, clasping them together. He silently recalled his conversation with the orphanage director about Calliope the other day.
During their private talk, Calix asked for Director Li’s cooperation to get samples from Calliope for the DNA test. The older woman was surprised to hear his request.
"This is just my assumption, Director Li. I can have my people doing it discreetly but, it’s better if you’re aware of what I’m doing. The situation is complicated. I can’t explain any to you yet."
Calix’s words bewildered Director Li. She didn’t expect that he personally paid a visit to the orphanage because of this hidden reason.
Despite being baffled, Director Li promised to cooperate. If this matter assisted Calliope in finding her birth parents, she was more than willing to help.
"Calliope’s origin is a mystery until now. We suddenly found her in front of our doorstep. No matter what the result is, it’s better than not checking it at all."
Thus, Director Li passed Calliope’s hair still intact with follicles and her clipped nails to Calix before he left that late afternoon. He promised to contact her as soon as possible.
Calliope’s hair and nails, Leslie’s nails and Calix’s nails – everything was sent to the genome institute. He emphasized anonymity to avoid leaking the results to outsiders.
"...daughter. I have a daughter."
Blinking, Calix sensed heat emanating from his eyes as his gaze became blurry. He lightly touched one of his eyes, feeling the dampness of his unshed tears.
Calix couldn’t lie about how surprised he was to learn that Calliope was his biological daughter. Despite the shock, he was not repulsive to the fact.
To be frank, Calix found himself imagining bringing Calliope into his and Leslie’s life as soon as he could. He wanted to give the child what she had lost in the past five years, building their family life together.
But...
Would Leslie wish the same?
Calix had no doubt about Leslie’s desire to reunite with Calliope – her daughter. Yet, he wondered about her acceptance of him as the little one’s father.
Calliope wasn’t the fruit of their love. She was the result of that night from six years ago when both of them were practically strangers dragged into a messy yet heinous plan of someone.
"What will she decide... after she learns about me?"
Sighing once again, Calix dragged himself to sit up. He randomly grabbed the blanket lying underneath him, a deep frown marring his forehead.
Leslie was a good woman. Calix couldn’t deny how comfortable he was whenever they were together. He also believed she could be a wonderful mother to Calliope.
And, he would give his all to be a great father to the little one.
Calix was fearful that one day Leslie would look at her with eyes full of hatred and disgust. She might wanted to initiate divorce as soon as possible to get away from him.
If that really happened... what should he do?
