Chapter 191: The Particular Night of Six Years Ago
Unfortunately for Calix, what happened on that particular night six years ago was still hazy in his mind. He barely remembered anything until recently.
Little pieces of that night started regaining some of their clarity early this year.
Calix wasn’t sure what had triggered his memory but, he made up his mind to marry Leslie after confirming she was that woman from that night.
Other people thought he simply chose a comatose lady to escape from his grandmother’s plan to get him a wife.
’No matter what is the reason, I’m such a scum. I’ve made her suffer.’
Keeping his eyes closed, Calix’s face contorted in agony. The sunlight beamed through the floor-to-ceiling windows, casting shadows from the back.
Calix’s heart ached terribly as those memories resurfaced in his mind, reminding him of the pain he had unknowingly inflicted on Leslie.
Calix remembered attending a banquet hosted by the Bai family on behalf of his father. At some point, he became drowsy until he requested to be escorted to one of the lounges.
’But... the attendant led me to a hotel room.’
Calix didn’t consume alcohol much that night. He was certain he wasn’t drunk, yet his consciousness kept slipping in and out.
The attendant left him alone in the hotel room. Calix vaguely recalled throwing himself on the mattress. In his drowsiness, he didn’t notice someone else was occupying the same bed.
’I felt weirdly hot after I got into the room. Then...’
Heat began spreading from his lower body, suffocating him with an intense thirst for a woman’s touch. When he realized what was happening, a pair of slender and soft hands grabbed him from behind.
Calix only realized a woman’s presence at that moment. His sanity warned him this was a trap but, his desire won control over his body when his mind projected the image of the lady he used to yearn for on the woman.
The rest was history.
Before dawn broke, Calix was stirred awake from his deep slumber after a passionate night with the woman. No one knew how horrified he was once he realized he bedded a stranger.
"I’m sorry! Miss... I’m sorry!"
The woman’s frightened face told Calix she didn’t expect such an encounter with him either. In the franticness, she hurriedly dressed up while apologizing profusely to him as if she was at fault instead of him.
Calix barely stopped the woman to ask her name. Her tearful eyes showed fear and distrust. Before he could say his name, the woman sprinted out of the room, leaving him speechless and confused.
’I only learned her name later. Much later.’
Exhaling a sigh, Calix forced himself to remember more. His inability to do so terribly frustrated him.
Saying he felt bad for Leslie for not finding her sooner was an understatement. The sudden discovery of their biological child bewildered Calix.
Certainly, the Li family played a major role in hiding Leslie’s pregnancy and, Calix also believed they might be responsible for abandoning Calliope at the orphanage.
Old Madam Li had already despised Leslie’s existence. Bearing a child out of wedlock would just increase the former’s hatred toward her own granddaughter.
Most probably, Leslie was forced to be separated from her child. Now that she gained another backing in the form of him, she began looking for Calliope.
’If only... if only I went to her sooner.’
What Calix deduced from the uncanny night was:
1. Someone maliciously made sure he was brought to the hotel room where Leslie was.
2. Both of them were under an influence, most probably potent aphrodisiacs. That explained how uncontrollable they were toward each other.
3. The person who manipulated him to head to the hotel room might or might not be the same person who designed his car accident.
All the assumptions Calix made next were entirely based on his blurred memories. That night happened just before he got caught in the particular accident that almost killed him.
Almost six months had passed after the passionate night he spent with her. Even after he emerged from the coma, he didn’t really recall that moment.
At that time, Calix’s priority was getting better. He suffered from month to month in order to regain his normal mobility and strength. Then, he tried getting the truth behind the accident, only to receive unsatisfactory findings.
His family failed to unearth the truth when he was still in a coma. What kind of chances he had after months?
"But... why Leslie?"
Slowly opening his eyes, Calix’s gaze fell on the DNA test results lying on the desk. Until now, he wasn’t sure why Leslie was the woman caught in this mess with him.
Did that person want to create a scandal between the Xu family and the Li family?
Or, Leslie was simply in a bad place at a bad time?
Calix understood he was still far from the truth. But, that was not the important thing to him right now.
Locking his fingers together, Calix rested his elbows on the armrest. More thoughts circulated in his mind while reminding him of Leslie who waited for his return after work.
"Now... how can I face her?"
Calix couldn’t stand deceiving Leslie any longer. He believed that she wasn’t aware that he was the man from six years ago.
Leslie had yet to fully recover to her normal state. If not for finding out who Calliope was to both of them, Calix was willing to bear the agony of waiting.
Their daughter Calliope had been away from them for years. Calix wished to embrace the little one, promising a safe and happy world to her. He assumed Leslie was just the same as him.
Fortunately, Calliope was surrounded by loving people. Director Li, the caretakers and the children shared an affectionate relationship. The little one wasn’t viewed as a burden to them.
"When should I tell Leslie?"
Shutting his eyes closed, Calix let out a repressed sigh. He faintly listened to the phantom echo of his heartbeat, raging waves violently crashed to the shoreline of his heart.
