Chapter 189: Don’t Butt in When I Speak
That morning, Calix got to have breakfast with Leslie, much to his delight. He couldn’t miss going to the office today but, he told Edward that he would clock in later than usual.
Aunt Wendy prepared the usual spread for breakfast. Calix and Leslie had a small bowl of savory porridge each. Soft-boiled eggs and chicken mushroom steamed buns were served on plates.
"I thought today’s your... day off..." asked Leslie after sipping some soy milk. Her eyes drifted from the cup to Calix who held it, "You didn’t sleep in today... en?"
Leslie finished washing up and getting ready slightly before seven. She had just wheeled herself out of the bedroom when her eyes caught Calix walking down the hallway.
Instead of casual clothes, Calix was clad in his usual three-piece suit. His countenance looked fresh as if he hadn’t come home late at midnight from a business trip.
"Morning, Leslie."
Calix’s cheerful salutation reminded Leslie that the man had indeed returned. She returned his morning greeting before both of them headed to the dining room downstairs.
Putting down Leslie’s glass of soy milk, Calix replied smugly, "I wanna laze around all day but, what to do? Yours truly’s presence is highly sought after in the company. I heard there’s a long line of people wanna see me."
"Tsk, we all know those people... will just annoy you ah... Don’t act so smug..."
Calix made a face, pretending to look disheartened, "Ouch! Don’t hurt me with the truth."
Leslie chuckled, thinking how dramatic CEO Xu could be from early in the morning. Lifting one hand, she slowly reached for one of the buns before putting it on Calix’s plate.
"Have some more ah... If you don’t wanna pass out... from anger and hunger... eat more this morning..."
While saying so, Leslie prayed for the well-being of the people who might be on the receiving end of Calix’s wrath. They should refrain from making silly mistakes unless they actually miss seeing their boss turned into a fire-breathing dragon.
Who knew? The three-day separation made them long for their boss’ wrath.
Grinning, Leslie laughed at herself. She feigned ignorance when Calix openly stared at her with one hand supporting his chin. The look of mischief and suspicion glimmered in his dark eyes.
"Feed me... Don’t slack off..."
Shrugging, Calix’s smile had a hint of a smirk. He scooped another spoonful of porridge, "Aye, aye, ma’am. I’ll eat that bun after feeding my lady here."
Leslie blinked, sensing the heat emanating from her cheeks. For a second, Calix’s gaze seemed beguiling despite having a hint of mischief.
Ring~ Ring~
The sudden ringing of Calix’s private phone broke Leslie’s reverie. She quietly watched him pick up the call. His eyes glinted in excitement, making her wonder who the caller was.
"Morning, oh pretty and gorgeous lady~ Did you miss me?"
Stunned, Leslie’s lips parted. Her shock was quickly replaced by realization once she recognized with whom Calix usually spoke like that.
Haha... he started annoying his grandmother right after connecting the call.
As expected by Leslie, Old Madam Xu expressed her annoyance by scoffing at Calix.
"Why do you assume I missed you ah? Listen to what your grandma wanna tell. Don’t butt in when I speak."
Calix cackled, happy to know his attempt to bug his grandmother worked well. Wiggling his brows, he replied, "Grandma, don’t be such a tsundere[1] ah. Do you know what that term means? Wanna me explain it to you?"
If this was a face-to-face conversation, Calix swore his grandmother was rolling her eyes, agitated by his antics.
"Cut it. I want to ask about your birthday. Do you want to hold a party?"
Calix’s cheerful countenance immediately changed as he grimaced. He acted as if he heard something disgusting from Old Madam Xu.
Leslie silently watched Calix talking on the phone with his grandmother. The change in his expression made her wonder what they were talking about.
Old Madam Xu’s question reminded Calix of his approaching birthday the end of this month. If not for his grandmother, he might forget about it.
"Why a party? A party is a gathering of annoying humans. I’d rather have a meal together like usual."
Leslie almost choked. She eyed Calix in disbelief.
What did he mean by that? Did his grandmother plan to throw a party? All of a sudden?
Old Madam Xu let out a sigh, thinking how she had already anticipated this answer. Grumbling, she said, "I thought you wanna have a party this year. After all, it’s your birthday after getting married."
Calix paused from replying anything. His grandmother’s last remark sprouted an idea in his mind, about something he had been talking about with Leslie.
Drifting his eyes to Leslie, Calix responded, "Grandma, there’s something I wanna do but, let me tell you later."
"Hurm... Alright. Tell me beforehand just so we can prepare anything well. I’ll hang up now. I’d rather talk to my plants than you."
"Hahaha! Bye-bye, pretty lady~"
Tut!
Without replying to her annoying grandson’s greeting, Old Madam Xu immediately ended the call.
"Why did your grandma... call you?" Leslie asked curiously, wondering what made Old Madam Xu contact Calix early in the morning, "Did she plan to... throw a party?"
From the bits of Calix’s conversation, Leslie roughly made that assumption.
What did Old Madam Xu want to celebrate? The entire Xu family had just gathered for the Qingming holiday last month.
A smile tugged on Calix’s lips at the sight of Leslie’s curious look. Lifting one hand, he gently flicked her forehead.
"It’s my birthday. Grandma asked whether I wanna have a party or not."
"What?" surprised, Leslie’s eyes widened. Calix’s grinning face was reflected in them, "Your birthday? When is... that?"
Leslie recalled seeing their marriage certificates before but, she didn’t remember the date of Calix’s birthday.
If Old Madam Xu asked about that now, shouldn’t it happen soon? Perhaps, the end of this month or the early of the next one.
"Next week’s Saturday, May 27th," raising his brows, Calix quickly brought up what he had in mind, "I told Grandma I wanna have a meal with just our family. But, I have another additional plan. Wanna hear?"
"Sure..."
Nodding, Leslie paid her full attention to Calix. She was still surprised to learn that Calix’s birthday was quickly approaching. She wondered what else he had in mind.
"How about..." Calix reached out for one of Leslie’s hands, placing it between his palms. Softening his tone, he directly brought up his suggestion, "...meeting our family during that day?"
"...huh?"
Calix’s proposal reminded Leslie of their conversation before. They had talked about revealing the state of her health within this month or the next. They also promised Irene they wouldn’t hide it any longer.
"Let’s do that..." Leslie nodded, agreeing without thinking much, "It’s a good occasion... for that... Will you tell your grandmother... about me first?"
Leslie didn’t think showing up at the celebration without telling—at least—Old Madam Xu was a good idea. She was reluctant thinking how surprised the old lady would be.
Old Madam Xu gave off the vibe of a kindhearted grandmother which was a true fact. Leslie would like to form a relationship with her.
Shrugging, Calix casually replied, "I will tell Grandma. We don’t wanna risk her fainting that day."
"Hehe... Your grandmother will nag at you... if she heard that..."
Smiling, Leslie eagerly anticipated her meeting with Calix’s family.
