Chapter 178: Watching the Spouses’ Interactions

After another bout of crying, Irene finally went to wash her face in the nearby washroom. Calix and Leslie stayed in the lounge.

"Her reaction was better than I thought," Calix chuckled while referring to Irene’s antics. He served the desserts and drinks on the coffee table, "All in all, she seems so happy."

"That’s good..." Leslie’s smile was tinged with helplessness, her eyes softening, "I just want to... have a nice chat... with her... today..."

"You’ll surely do."

Aunt Wendy made two desserts to welcome Irene for the first time. She baked yuzu bread pudding and strawberry yogurt cake. Aside from those, she also included spicy mayo egg sandwiches.

For the drinks, Aunt Wendy prepared iced butterfly pea tea with fresh slices of lemon on the side. A glass jar of mineral water accompanied the tea.

While the husband and wife talked, Irene reappeared. Her face was slightly damp from the water. The redness of her face was nothing compared to her swollen eyes.

"Come and sit with your sister," Calix gestured to the vacant seat on Leslie’s left side. He occupied the right side one, "Aren’t you hungry after all that crying? Have drinks too. What if you get dehydrated."

Narrowing her puffy eyes, Irene complained, "Brother-in-law, you talk so much. Are you actually an old lady in disguise?"

Calix scoffed, never expecting such a response from Irene. Leslie clammed her mouth shut, holding back her laughter.

"Ignore him... come here, Irene..." Leslie patted twice on the seat pointed by Calix, "Aunt Wendy made desserts... let’s try them..."

"Okay~"

Irene glared at Calix before hurrying to Leslie’s side. He rolled his eyes, thinking how his younger sister-in-law might have the potential to be as annoying as his own younger sister.

"Big Sister, you can’t eat by yourself, en?" Irene remembered how stiffly Leslie moved. She concluded her sister was unable to do many things like normal, "Let me feed you ah."

Irene’s worry was still reflected in her glossy eyes, enticing Leslie to smile. Reaching out for the former’s hand, she gently squeezed it.

"Thank you for worrying... but, enjoy your... time here..." Leslie spoke word by word, her eyes locking into Irene’s concerned gaze, "Let’s have a chat... Your brother-in-law will... help me if needed..."

Leslie was actually bashful when saying the last sentence out loud. But, she wanted to show Irene that her relationship with Calix was great. He also had brought up the matter before the young teen arrived.

"I’m sure Irene will worry about us. How about we act like usual?"

At first, Leslie was confused with the meaning of Calix’s words. His explanation helped to clear her puzzlement.

Thus, Leslie worded it out when talking to Irene.

Baffled, Irene shifted her eyes from her elder sister to her brother-in-law. Her mind conjured up the images of Calix feeding Leslie.

"...okay."

Instead of asking anything, Irene nodded in understanding.

Leslie and Calix exchanged another smile.

"Come, come. Choose what you wanna try first," Calix passed a plate and a dessert fork to Irene, "Let’s have lunch together. Surely you wanna stay longer here, en?"

"Yeah, I’ll tell Mom and Dad about that," Irene referred to the time she would leave. Picking a slice of the bread pudding, she asked, "Big Sister, you don’t want me to tell Mom and Dad about you, do you?"

Irene remembered Leslie saying no other people knew about her regaining consciousness aside from the medical providers. Calix also reminded her to come here with a driver instead of her parents.

This meant the spouses still planned to keep Leslie’s current health condition a secret.

Leslie and Calix glanced at one another. Nodding, she passed the baton to him instead of answering Irene’s question herself.

"For the time being, please don’t tell anyone yet," Calix withdrew his eyes from Leslie, now looking at his curious younger sister-in-law, "We’re waiting for your sister to get better first. Then, I’ll arrange a family meeting between ours."

"Your brother-in-law is right..." Leslie chimed in, showing her stance was the same as Calix’s, "We’ve discussed about this... Perhaps, at the end of... this month or... next one..."

Leslie didn’t mean to wait until she could move her body as usual. But, at least she wanted to gain more strength and mobility than right now.

"Okay. I’ll zip my mouth," Irene quickly agreed. There was nothing to question her elder sister about her decision, "If Mom and Dad ask, I’ll just tell them you’re doing fine."

"Thanks, Irene..." Leslie’s lips curled up, happy to know how readily available Irene was in cooperating with her and Calix, "You can come... here anytime... if you want..."

"Hehe, okay~"

As they continued enjoying the desserts, Irene chatted more with Leslie and Calix. The high school girl did most of the talking while the spouses listened to her stories.

At the same time, Calix fed Leslie like usual. Irene seemed to be surprised for a moment once she witnessed it then, she simply joked saying how close their relationship was.

"Leslie, are you sleepy?" Calix focused on Leslie as he saw how drowsy she looked later. Her eyes kept drooping, "How about getting a nap?"

"I think so... wake me up... in thirty minutes..."

Neither Leslie nor Calix saw the confused look on Irene’s face.

Leslie?

Why did her brother-in-law call her sister by that name?

"Irene, sorry..." Leslie smiled apologetically at Irene, not noticing the puzzlement lacing the teenager’s countenance, "I can’t stay awake... for longer... I’ll just take... a short nap..."

"Ah! Big Sister, it’s okay! Let’s talk again after your nap," Irene woke up from her stupor, nervously reassuring Leslie that it was fine if the latter wanted to rest, "I’m not in a rush to get back home."

"I’ll go and put your sister to bed," Calix carefully picked the drowsy Leslie from the couch, moving her to the wheelchair, "Wanna follow? I can give you a home tour soon."

"Oh, okay."

Putting down the plate on the coffee table, Irene quickly followed Calix and Leslie. They headed to the home elevator.

’Seems like Big Sister is really telling the truth. Brother-in-law cares about her very well.’

Irene couldn’t help but observe Leslie and Calix’s interaction. Even though the man loved to joke, he tended to speak softly to her elder sister.

If possible, Irene wanted to ask more about their marriage. But, this was not a suitable time.

Once they reached the bed, Calix picked Leslie up from the wheelchair before laying her on the mattress. Irene didn’t miss any of the spouses’ interactions as wonder spread in her heart.

"I’ll bring Irene to see around the house," Calix ran one palm over Leslie’s head before brushing her bangs aside, "Call Mrs. An if you need anything."

"Okay..." Leslie smiled at Calix before shifting her eyes to Irene, "Have fun... touring the house... I’ll have lunch with you..."

"Big Sister, don’t worry about me," Irene flailed her hands, unsure what to do, "Haha... I have all the time in the world. Just have a good rest then, we can chat again."

"...I’ll do that."

Unable to hold her drowsiness any longer, Leslie closed her eyes, falling asleep easily.

Smiling, Calix arched his brows. He made sure to cover Leslie properly with the blanket before focusing on Irene, "Let’s go. How about we have a chat after the home tour?"

Irene nodded, "Okay."
