Chapter 173: Of the Dawning Sky and His Warm Touch
A few minutes before five, Calix entered Leslie’s room to wake her up for their early morning stroll. He was amused to see she was already up. Her lively eyes showed no traces of sleepiness.
"Did you set up the alarm?" asked Calix, his voice tinged with chuckles. Quickening his pace, he headed to the bedside.
"I did..." Leslie’s lips curved into a smile, staring at Calix under the dimness of the bedroom, "Can’t afford to... miss the sunrise..."
Leslie slept before ten o’clock struck. She was giddy at the thought of going for an early morning stroll. The crack of dawn had its own charm, incomparable to the sunset.
"Wait here," Calix carefully helped Leslie to sit up. He pushed the blanket away, "Let me wash your face first."
Leslie nodded once. She quietly watched Calix heading to the ensuite washroom. Her ears caught the faint sound of water hitting the base of the sink. Soon, he returned with a bowl of water and a clean face towel.
"Do you want to do it yourself?" asked Calix while putting the bowl on the adjustable overbed table. He pushed it to face Leslie.
"Let me... it’ll be quite... messy tho..."
"It’s fine," Calix folded the long sleeves of Leslie’s nightgown, "Take your time."
Leslie grinned at Calix before slowly bringing her hands into the bowl. The water was warm, which suited her preference. The orange light of the table lamp left glimmers on its rippling surface.
Scooping some water in her palms, Leslie slowly bent down to wash her face. She felt better once the water made contact with her skin. Little droplets of water slid from her palms, traveling down to her elbows.
After several slow movements, Leslie was done washing her face. She patted her cheeks a few times before taking the towel handed by Calix.
"Wear this shawl," Calix pushed the overbed table to the wall before grabbing a shawl hanging on a chair, "It’s quite chilly outside."
"Okay..."
Calix draped the shawl over Leslie’s shoulders. Under her request, he bundled her long hair into a loose bun.
"Ready?"
Leslie grinned, answering Calix with a nod of her head.
Placing one hand under her knees and the other across her back, Calix carefully carried Leslie from the bed. Her wheelchair was just placed nearby.
Calix pushed the wheelchair out of the room. The entire mansion was blanketed in silence, save for the white noise in the background.
"Wanna have breakfast outdoors? We can eat in the pavilion by the lake," asked Calix, referring to one of the garden pavilions, not the one built alongside the wooden deck.
"Sounds nice..." Leslie agreed without a second thought, "I haven’t been... to the garden... at dawn..."
Calix’s amused chuckles resonated above Leslie’s head, followed by his words, "Now you can’t randomly sleep in the garden at night anymore. Do you miss it?"
Leslie shook her head in helplessness, recalling the time she slept by the flower bed at the Xu family’s ancestral home. She had done the same thing a few times in this mansion’s spacious yard too.
"Of course... I miss doing that... sleeping outdoors is... good..."
More laughter escaped Calix’s lips. His mind couldn’t help from conjuring some plans based on Leslie’s words.
Soon, the husband and wife reached the door leading to the outside. Calix moved Leslie from the indoor wheelchair to the outdoor one.
The tranquility of the dawn welcomed them in the backyard. The sun would rise very soon. Calix led Leslie to the lake, her favorite part in the backyard.
Streaks of violet, amber and ruby were reflected on the water’s surface as the sun slowly ascended above the horizon. The vibrant hues also washed over the trees, flowers and grass.
"Are your eyes okay?" Calix glanced at Leslie who kept staring at the dawning sky from the hills.
"I’m fine... thanks for asking... I can see it... for now..."
Calix smiled. He didn’t realize how mellow his gaze and the curve of his lips were, "Seems like you’re enjoying it. I’m glad. Oh, wanna feel the grass?"
"Huh?"
Leslie’s confusion was cleared right away by Calix. He told her that he could help her to stand if she wanted to plant her feet on the grass, something she hadn’t done in almost three months.
"Want... I want that..."
How could she refuse the suggestion?
Even though she couldn’t walk as usual yet, Leslie still wanted to feel her feet brushed against the soft grass.
"Okay~ Here I come."
Bending down, Calix took off Leslie’s socks. Then, he wrapped one arm at the backside of her waist.
Calix draped Leslie’s right arm across his back as well. Her petite frame gently collided against his sturdy one as he supported the underside of her knees.
"I’ll lower you to the ground now. Hold on to me."
Leslie nodded nervously. Calix slowly lowered her feet before gradually letting her stand while being supported by him. His sturdy hold around her waist silently told her that she wouldn’t fall.
"How do you feel? Good?"
Leslie chuckled at the sight of Calix’s huge grin. Faint heat spread from her cheeks down to her neck. She could feel his high body temperature through the layers worn by them.
Leslie was aware of how comfortable she was being physically closer to Calix. Everything started on the day she woke up in Charlene’s body.
Yet, she couldn’t help but be conscious about it.
"Feels so nice... the grass is soft..." replied Leslie while shifting her eyes to the ground.
The dewdrops cooled Leslie’s feet as she stepped on the grass but, she didn’t mind it. The sensation felt better compared to the time she was being a soul.
Leslie and Calix watched the sunrise until half of the sun showed itself on the horizon. The dazzling ball of light gradually chased the darkness away.
"I’ll go and get our breakfast," Calix pushed Leslie to the pavilion he talked about before, "Aunt Wendy’s already in the kitchen."
The housekeeper always started her day at five in the morning. Calix used to tell Aunt Wendy to take it easy but, she said she was always an early riser.
As for Uncle Raymond, he usually showed himself at the mansion around six in the morning. He would occasionally sleep in if he was exhausted the day before by tending to the yard.
Leslie simply followed Calix’s plan. Even though he said he could clock in a bit later than usual, she was still thinking about not bothering his morning too much.
"Let’s wash your feet first."
There was a faucet nearby. Calix gently held Leslie’s feet one by one before rinsing the dirt off. He didn’t notice the bashful look expressed on her countenance.
"Okay, I’ll go now."
"I’ll wait here..."
Calix made sure Leslie didn’t sit facing the sunrise before leaving the pavilion. He was afraid the brightness would gradually hurt her eyes.
While Calix was away, Leslie relished the quiet time she had in the backyard. Her mind recalled the moments she shared with him just now.
’My heart feels funny.’
Pursing her lips, Leslie hoped that Calix didn’t hear how loud her heart was beating when he held her close earlier. She still sensed the lingering warmth left by his touch.
