Chapter 157: The Throbbing Headache

Chapter 157: The Throbbing Headache

"Kazuya, I’m sorry if I sounded too full of myself but, I still have to ask. All this while, the things that you have done to me, did they have any meaning?"[1]

Leslie intently focused on listening to the audiobook, unaware of anything else that was happening around her if there was any.

The voice actress was narrating the female lead’s question following her inner monologue. She was having a heart-to-heart talk with the male lead.

’How will he answer her? Please! Let it be positive!’

Leslie’s brows slightly raised in wonder, anticipating how the male lead would answer the female lead. She unconsciously clenched the throw blanket covering her legs, excited to know if there would be positive changes in their relationship.

The voice actor softly yet firmly spoke, embodying the gentle nature of the male lead toward the female lead.

"What if I say I have the intention to pursue you? What if I tell you that I want to court you?"

’Aaaa! Yes!’

Leslie almost cried out in joy. Smiling to herself, she inwardly applauded the female lead’s courage and the male lead’s straightforwardness.

Sigh~ Just imagining them having that heartfelt talk by the river was enough to make her swoon.

’Yayyy! They’re together now? Aren’t they? Hehehe~’

In a happy mood, Leslie continued listening to the audiobook. Even if she wanted to stop, she couldn’t! The next Chapters made her squeal like a teenage girl.

’Hehe~ I can’t watch drama or read novels much but, at least I can listen to audiobooks.’

Leslie had been spending her time in the bedroom after breakfast the next day, sitting on the comfy bed. Even though it was Saturday—the beginning of the weekend—she had nothing much to do.

The weather outside was great but, Leslie still couldn’t stand how bright the sun could be. If possible, she wanted to step outside and enjoy the good weather.

Calix accompanied Leslie for breakfast before disappearing inside his home office. He was most likely preoccupied with his work as the leader of Xu International.

’Weekend is to be enjoyed ah. I hope he won’t be too busy.’

Leslie recalled Calix returned home early yesterday. He also had mentioned about finishing his impending work during the weekend.

Drowned in her pool of thoughts, Leslie didn’t notice the bedroom door was opened from the outside. Mrs. Su appeared as she walked into the bedroom.

"Mrs. Xu, it’s time for your massage," said Mrs. Su, trying to catch Leslie’s attention, "Let’s start our massage session, en?"

Smiling at the private nurse, Leslie nodded, "...okay."

Leslie paused the audiobook before pulling the earbuds off her ears and putting her phone on the bedside table. Her movement was slow as she was being careful not to drop the phone. Her grasp was still weak.

Leslie let Mrs. Su help her to lie down properly on the mattress. She initially sat with her back leaning on the cushy pillows, propping against the headboard.

"As usual, tell me if you’re uncomfortable," Mrs. Su folded Leslie’s long sleeves, revealing her skinny arms, "I’ll start from your right arm."

"...okay, Mrs. Su," Leslie whispered softly, understanding what Mrs. Su wanted to do.

Mrs. Su and Mrs. An continued massaging Leslie even after she regained consciousness. What they did was beneficial for the latter’s weakened limbs. The private nurses scheduled when the massage therapy should be done.

Leslie had come to terms with Mrs. Su and Mrs. An taking care of her body, including washing and cleaning her private parts. She pretended to be a newborn baby who was incapable of handling her own hygiene needs.

’For the sake of my mental health, let’s not overthink about it.’

That was what Leslie kept telling herself.

During the massage session, Leslie was bound to drift to sleep. Both Mrs. Su and Mrs. An were skilled in this field. She was grateful for Old Madam Xu who sent the experienced caretakers to her.

"Mrs. Xu, I’ll step outside for a moment. Please ring the bell if you need me, en?"

Mrs. Su covered Leslie’s body with the blanket after finishing the massage session. Leslie’s drowsy eyes hinted at her sleepiness.

"...I know... thank you... Mrs. Su..."

Closing her eyes, Leslie faintly heard Mrs. Su’s footsteps fading as the latter left the room. She couldn’t deny that she was sleepy but, her brain was wide awake.

The reason?

Finding Calliope’s whereabouts.

’I cried so much last night. It still feels like a dream.’

Unable to fall asleep, Leslie recalled the heartwrenching yet blissful moment that occurred last night. When she woke up this morning, she thought everything was just a dream.

But, it was not.

She had finally found her precious daughter.

This morning, Calix came to the bedroom to bring Leslie downstairs for breakfast. He jokingly teased her about last night’s event.

"Did you think you’re dreaming? Leslie, you’ve found where the girl is. Hehe, it’s not a dream ah."

Calix handed Calliope’s passport-sized photo to Leslie, much to her delight. She put the print on the bedside table, wanting to keep looking at it whenever she could.

Despite Calliope appearing very different from the one in her memories, Leslie didn’t mind about it at all. The little one was still her daughter.

’I need to get better quickly. Calix has promised to bring me to meet Poppy. But...’

Leslie’s heart was overwhelmed with happiness. Yet, it shriveled a little when a thought resurfaced in her mind.

’Charlene, she... she has a child, right?’

Slightly frowning, Leslie recalled her last meeting with Charlene. She also tried to remember every thought that crossed her mind during that time.

Leslie asked Charlene what was the second thing the latter wanted her to find. But, Charlene didn’t answer her clearly.

"You’ll eventually find it, Leslie. You will find it alongside your own precious treasure."[2]

Treasure...

Her treasure was Calliope.

What if... Charlene meant that she had a child as well?

Was the little girl who Charlene carried before disappearing for good her daughter?

If that was true...

"...who was... the... father? Shouldn’t I know from her memories? Urgh!"

Leslie winced. Out of nowhere, a piercing headache stopped her from continuing to think. The sensation was akin to what she felt before regaining consciousness in Charlene’s body.

’...why? Does it happen... because I try to think further?’

Leslie bit her lower lip, trying to endure how badly her head continued throbbing. The lingering pain churned her stomach. She couldn’t help but feel something ominous lurking beneath her ache.

’Mimo... why does my head hurt? Is it because I try... to guess about Charlene’s past?’

Having no choice left, Leslie sought Mimo’s help. She didn’t know whether the crochet fox toy had an answer or not but, she still needed to ask.

Mimo crawled next to Leslie’s left arm, nestling by her side.

Leslie, your guess is true. You’ve taken over Charlene’s body but, your memories are still aligning with hers.

Leslie exhaled a sigh. She didn’t expect that kind of matter wasn’t resolved yet.

’I thought I just needed triggers to remember any of her memories. Turns out, my memories and hers aren’t fully synchronized yet. When will it finish?’

That... I don’t have the answer. I’m sorry, Leslie...

Mimo’s dejected tone enticed Leslie to laugh. She didn’t blame the crochet fox toy for the lack of an answer. After several experiences, she understood that Mimo didn’t know everything.

’It’s fine. I’ll take my time... to think about it. Ah, my head’s still hurting. I better sleep for now.’

Sleep well, Leslie. I’ll accompany you here.

Leslie chuckled as she felt Mimo’s stubby upper limbs stroking her left arm, "Yeah... thank you..."

Unwilling to succumb to her headache, Leslie let sleep claim her consciousness. Her chest gently rose and fell in a successive pattern as she entered slumberland.

Eventually, her throbbing headache ceased.

Leslie didn’t remember how long had she been sleeping. Upon waking up, her ears caught the sound of pages flipping.

Who was it?

The question rose in Leslie’s mind but, for some reason, her heart already had the answer. Without a doubt, it was not Mrs. Su, her caretaker.

"...Calix?"

Without opening her eyes, Leslie whispered the name. A familiar chuckle responded to her.

"Did you get a nice nap?"

Calix’s mellow tone was imbued with playfulness, earning a soft smile from Leslie. Slowly opening her eyes, she saw him sitting by the bedside with a book on his lap.

"I did... I even dreamed... of something..."

Putting the book down, Calix reached out to help Leslie sit up. A smirk graced his lips as he looked at her sleepy countenance.

"What is it?"

Leslie blinked a few times, chasing her lingering sleepiness. Her answer prompted Calix to laugh harder.

"Your... pumpkin soup..."
