Chapter 3: A Millionaire Overnight!
A hundred thousand dollars! Even before traveling to this world, Rhodes had never seen that much money in his life. You’d have to be an idiot to turn down an offer like that. After all, apart from this Hermès president, who else would be crazy enough to offer such a price for a mere guitar case?
“Deal!”
Rhodes sealed the deal on the spot. The case hadn’t been sold yet, so it was still his to offer. He had every right to make the sale. As for whether it was genuine or not, who cares? It’s not like he had claimed it was real. The guy had insisted it was authentic and willingly threw down a hundred grand for it. Even if it turned out to be a fake, it wouldn’t be Rhodes’s problem.
“Old John, I didn’t expect you to miss something like this,” Brown Carl chuckled, clearly in a good mood as he looked at the old man behind the counter. It was obvious that the two of them had a long-standing relationship.
“Luxury goods aren’t my area of expertise,” Old John shrugged. Every collector had their specialty, and luxury items weren’t his. Making mistakes was understandable.
With just two items, Rhodes had walked away with a profit of $110,000. Needless to say, he was feeling pretty good. He pulled out his wallet and poured out the mysterious silver coins he’d received from the exchange.
Seven coins from seven different countries and historical eras.
In the U.S., collectors had a strong interest in historic gold and silver coins, especially ones with cultural or historical significance, so their prices were often quite high.
Collectively, the seven coins could probably fetch several thousand dollars.
“Hmm?”
Old John, who had been glancing casually at the coins, suddenly froze. His eyes locked onto one particular coin—a Flowing Hair Liberty silver dollar. He grabbed a magnifying glass and began carefully examining its surface. After a long pause, he exhaled deeply.
“Where did you get these coins?”
“Family heirloom.”
Rhodes didn’t even blink as he lied through his teeth.
Total deadpan delivery, heh.
No one knew where these coins came from anyway, so he could claim whatever he wanted. But from Old John’s expression, he could tell that this particular coin was no ordinary antique. Even the $100,000 guitar case hadn’t made the old man react like this. Rhodes guessed the coin must be worth at least $300,000.
“The other coins are Central European, likely from the 18th or 19th century. They’re in excellent condition—well-preserved with fine engravings. I can offer $1,000 each for those.”
“But this one…” John pointed to the Flowing Hair Liberty dollar. “How much do you want for it?”
He didn’t make an offer himself—he wanted Rhodes to name a price. Rhodes stroked his chin and thought it over. Then he slowly held up five fingers.
He wasn’t sure of the coin’s true value, but better to shoot high. He asked for $500,000, but mentally he was aiming for around $300,000. If the offer landed anywhere above that, he’d be satisfied.
“Deal.”
Before Rhodes could say anything else, John immediately agreed, not an ounce of hesitation in his words.
“Five hundred thousand dollars. How do you want the payment?”
“Cough, cough, cough!”
Rhodes choked on his saliva, face twisting in disbelief.
He agreed to five HUNDRED thousand just like that?!
He thought maybe he misheard, but one look at John’s expression—like he’d just snagged the deal of a lifetime—told him everything. Clearly, this coin was worth way more than $500,000 but Rhodes had already named his price, and backing out now would be bad.
“Just wire it to my account.”
Leaving the antique shop, Rhodes was still in a daze. In less than an hour, he had gone from a broke nobody with less than $10 in his pocket…to a millionaire worth over $500,000. He stared at the cold, hard digits on his bank app and pinched his thigh.
“This really isn’t a dream…”
It wasn’t until he got back home that the excitement began to wear off. Suddenly remembering the $500,000 worth of coin, Rhodes pulled out his phone and started researching.
And sure enough, he found something—
The Flowing Hair Liberty silver dollar was the first $1 coin ever issued by the U.S. federal government—an incredibly rare piece. There were hardly any still in existence today. In fact, just a few months ago, one had sold at a major auction for $6.6 million. Which meant…Old John had scored massively by buying it for just $500,000.
Rare coins like these had massive collector value. You couldn’t just buy them, even if you had the money.
Still, Rhodes didn’t feel like he’d lost out. After all, that $6.6 million figure was an auction price, and auction houses always took a hefty cut. For a private sale, the coin’s actual market value was probably closer to four or five million.
Now that he had money, Rhodes’s next steps were simple. He pulled out his phone and placed an online order. He spent over $10,000 on a live, healthy Belgian Blue bull.
If trading just a few pieces of beef could strengthen his body, then with enough material…His physique could become exponentially more powerful. Then, finally, he’d be ready to explore the mysterious world beyond the time-space gate.
With the order placed, all he had to do was wait for delivery.
