Chapter 14: Werewolves? Who isn’t one!

Crash!

The wooden wall of the cabin shattered. The force of the shotgun blast sent the possibly dead werewolf flying out of the house. As a lethal weapon for close-range combat, the destructive power of a shotgun was no joke. Forget wood, being this close, even sheet metal would be pierced clean through.

Rhodes’s eyes were cold, exuding a deadly killing intent. He reloaded calmly and stepped through the hole in the wall.

Four shotgun blasts at this range, huh? No werewolf should survive that.

Even if this one had a 90% chance of being dead, Rhodes was always the cautious type.

If you’re going to kill, you make sure there’s zero chance of survival.

He wouldn’t be at ease until even the corpse was incinerated. If there’s no 100% certainty of death, then it’s still alive.

Outside the cabin. The werewolf lay in a bloody heap, motionless. Rhodes slowly approached. Suddenly, his pupils contracted.

Werewolves may be strong, but they’re still made of flesh and blood. Apart from a powerful physique and regeneration, they weren’t all that different from humans. If you get shot, you bleed. If you take too much damage, you die.

He’d killed two werewolves before. When hit by a shotgun, most of their bodies were practically blown to bits. But this one? No such catastrophic damage. Even with dozens of steel pellets embedded into its flesh, it was only severely injured. Not fatal.

Swish!

The werewolf suddenly opened its eyes. The next second, its already beastly body began a full transformation. As it changed, its bloody wounds began to heal at an alarming rate. Pellets popped out of its body and clattered to the ground. Within moments, new fur had grown, and the human limbs were rapidly morphing into animalistic ones.

“Tsk!”

Rhodes couldn’t help but suck in a sharp breath.

Are you kidding me? This is a werewolf?!

He’d never heard of one with such thick skin.

Able to tank shotgun blasts? What kind of muscle monster is this?

“You planning to ascend to godhood or something?”

Without hesitation, Rhodes raised the shotgun and fired two rounds point-blank at the werewolf’s head. Just like how villains die from monologuing too long, Rhodes never understood those stories where the hero, despite having the upper hand, wastes time talking to the enemy, lets them transform, lets them kill half the party, then wins out of sheer determination.

What? Too many teammates? Sacrifice a few for dramatic tension? No, thanks. When he’s down, finish him off. The only good enemy is a dead one.

Two shots empty, no time to reload. Rhodes pulled out his revolver and emptied all six bullets straight into the werewolf’s eye socket.

By now, the howling beast had completed its transformation. Gone was the humanoid form. In its place was now a towering, three-meter-tall giant gray wolf. Its right eye was bleeding, half its face blown apart by the shotgun. Its remaining left eye glared with unrestrained savagery.

The good news was, it was crippled. The bad news was, that it didn’t seem to reduce its combat strength. If anything, it made it even more berserk.

“How troublesome,” Rhodes muttered.

If even face-full shotgun blasts couldn’t kill this thing, it wasn’t his fault for holding back. It was a shame he didn’t have any grenades.

Doesn’t matter how strong your stomach is, stuff two high-explosives in and you’re toast.

Once this is over, he must find some grenades. While he thought, the crazed wolf lunged.

“Awooo!”

Sharp claws and fangs tore through the air like a hurricane. Rhodes flipped out of the way. Behind him, a tree as thick as two men’s arms was shredded in one swipe.

Power, speed, reflexes, defense, and regeneration — this beast had maxed all its stats maxed out.

Rhodes grimaced as he watched the wolf’s wounds healing. Fighting a werewolf was like this was a matter of either kill or be killed. If he were just a regular human, he’d be as good as dead by now.

Too bad for you!

“You’re a werewolf?” Rhodes’s eyes gleamed viciously. “What, you think I’m not one either?”

He clenched his jaw and visualized a full moon rising in his mind. In a split second, a wild, bloodthirsty instinct surged up from deep within his veins.

“Awooooo!”

A suppressed growl erupted, like a king arriving to claim his throne. The whole forest went still. Even the insects and birds stopped making a sound.

Boom!

The giant gray wolf was sent flying, crashing through several trees. From the swirling dust, a massive figure slowly emerged, nearly three meters tall and covered in gray fur. It was Rhodes’s werewolf form.

His body, sculpted like it was cast from molten iron, bulged with muscle and glowed with raw power. His fur was tough as steel needles, shimmering in the light. His beast-like eyes gleamed a deep crimson. Fangs like knives and claws like razors made him intimidating. Aside from the head, much of his body retained a humanoid form, but the feral aura he emitted was primal.

Rhodes took a silver cross necklace from his storage space and wrapped it around his right hand.

Fighting werewolves? Use the one thing they fear most.

Sizzle!

The place where the chain touched his skin sizzled like cold water on hot metal. Rhodes ignored the burning pain. His werewolf bloodline was special, different from innate werewolves. So, ordinary silver had no effect on him. It couldn’t hurt him. For normal werewolves, though? Silver was deadly. And Holy Silver? Straight-up lethal.

Rhodes stared at the beastified, mindless werewolf in front of him. A blood-colored aura rose from his body.

Berserk Mode.

His gray fur took on a red sheen. His already immense power grew even stronger. Rhodes grinned. His fangs gleamed with bloodlust.

“Take a guess. How many minutes will it take me to kill you?”
