Chapter 627: Went Missing

Amidst the chaotic ruins of the city, five sleek aircrafts emerged on the horizon, each one bearing the sirens’ insignia. They were unmistakably vanguards, sent to scout the situation. The soldiers stationed on the deck were all mechanically enhanced, and they swiftly assembled weapons from the components of their own bodies.

One of them couldn’t help but click his tongue and remark in a mocking tone, "Where do they find the nerve to fight us on land?"

Despite the grim atmosphere, there was no hint of panic among them, not even when the aircrafts’ artillery locked onto them.

For they had the Eldest Young Master standing behind them—humanity’s greatest weapon and the strongest human recorded down history.

With a low mechanical hum, Noir’s back split open, and from within emerged a barrel forged from alloys darker than space. The body pulsed with a bluish glow at the seams, and the same glow began lighting up on Noir’s cybernetics eyes down to his entire body.

He looked hard and cold from head to toe, except for his soft curly brown hair that fluttered wildly with the wind.

In that moment, anyone looking at him would never have thought that he was human, for he resembled machine all the way more. The barrel, now mounted on his shoulder, rotated with eerie precision and locked onto its target.

And before the enemy aircrafts could even close the distance, he gathered energy and—fired!

A blinding bolt erupted from the barrel, tearing through the sky with the fury of a dying star before smashing right onto the aircrafts!

It was too late for them to evade—not that they could. The force of that single attack seemed twice, or even thrice stronger than a missile, eliminating each and every aircraft in an instant and turning them into a spectacular show of fireworks!

"Haa..." Noir released a stream of vapor through his lips as particles of light gathered at the core of the barrel once more.

All around him, the soldiers were pressing themselves close to the ground to avoid being blown away altogether with the energy shockwaves. Upon seeing Noir recharging without a rest, someone blurted out in awe, shuddering, "Damn, our Eldest Young Master is particularly fierce today..."

"Is he mad that his betrothal ceremony is interrupted midway because of this?"

"Of course, duh. If it were you, could you still be nice and patient if someone ruined your wedding?"

"That... makes sense."

"Oh God, I never pegged him as such a romantic!"

"Tsk, suddenly I pity the sirens for picking a fight today, of all days..."

Noir paid no heed to the soldiers’ hushed chatter. Not only because he couldn’t be bothered to, but also because they were not exactly wrong—he was indeed a little pissed off. And above all, he was in a hurry to end this war that had crashed upon them without warning.

For some inexplicable reason, he could not seem to remove the last look Gu Luoxin gave him before they parted from his mind, and it left him with a bad aftertaste in his mouth. He could not begin to fathom where this sense of urgency had come from, but one thing remained unchanged: Noir always acted following his instinct.

End the war, catch an aircraft, and fly to the Garuda territory—that was his main plan for now.

For that, he was not going to show the sirens any mercy.

Unfortunately, things didn’t quite go as planned. Perhaps shocked by the overwhelming power contained in Noir’s single attack, the sirens dared not send over any more aircrafts, and any attempt to breach the tower was swiftly subdued by the soldiers. It seemed like they had vividly recognized their disadvantages and were now discussing their next countermeasures.

Alas, time was the only thing Noir did not have at the moment.

He was briefly considering whether he should just go on offense when a soldier called out to him quietly from behind, "Eldest Young Master."

It was none other than the person Noir had instructed to take care of Young Master Ares and his servants’ corpses, one of this identity’s trusted subordinates who would never betray him to side with his father.

At the sight of the man’s somber expression, Noir felt his left eyelid twitching ominously. He put aside his cannon for a second, asking in a low voice, "What’s the matter?"

The soldier placed a hand over his own mouth and took a couple of steps forward to whisper into Noir’s ear.

With each word spoken, Noir’s pupils dilated sharply, and his expression turned darker than the bottom of the pot. Rarely had the soldiers ever witnessed their Eldest Young Master displaying such vivid shifts of expression on his face—he even started exhaling steam with each breath he took, evidence of his agitation!—and they became so alarmed that they dared not even breathe too loudly.

However, the Eldest Young Master did not explode as they had feared, instead he merely pressed his lips tight and spat out a single order, heavy on emphasis, "Investigate."

"Yes, Sir!"

Even after the soldier departed in a hurry, the others still dared not relax, for Noir’s expression was growing heavier with each passing second.

"The body in the lounge... it went missing." He recalled what the soldier had reported earlier. "My sincerest apologies, Eldest Young Master. We let our guard down for a second and—"

The body in the lounge, it could only belong to Young Master Ares.

—Young Master Ares’ corpse had gone missing.

What a spectacular turn of events, Noir thought expressionlessly.

The young master’s death had been confirmed by Gu Luoxin and a couple other soldiers; there should be no mistake about it. Unless he had the ability to self-resurrect and walk away on his own, it could only mean one thing: someone had taken the corpse away.

Who? How? And more importantly—for what?

Noir had no way of knowing these answers until he caught the perpetrator, much to his chagrin.

Similarly, the death of His Highness Prince Kaivia was also surrounded by a shroud of mystery. If Noir’s instinct had not failed him, he was certain that both incidents were linked, likely done by the same party.

Someone, or a group of people, had been going around killing the young masters of the main territories—their current goal unknown. Going by logic, after the demise of the young master from the sky and sea territories, the next target couldn’t be more obvious; it should be the land territory. Or in other words, him or Jin Jiuchi.

The two of them were going to be targeted soon.

And yet, despite the threat of death looming over him, Noir found himself unexpectedly distracted. He cared more about the strange disappearance of Young Master Ares’ body than the hidden enemy targeting his life. Perhaps it was because he was quite confident in his ability to leave here unscathed, whereas Gu Luoxin—

It would not bode well for him.

The sense of urgency in Noir’s chest grew stronger.
