Chapter 559: I See You
Chapter 559: I See You
There was a brief pause from the other side before Noir’s low voice drifted over, "...Where are you?"
"Ah, me?" Gu Luoxin scanned the empty, dimly lit house and the pitiful cold dishes before him, and suddenly felt the urge to cry again. But he quickly tilted his head to blink back the tears; the last thing he wanted right now was Noir finding out how much of a crybaby he was!
"I’m at— wait," he was just about to answer when he recalled a more important matter, "Why are you calling me, Senior? Do you need something?"
Noir had been giving him the cold shoulder these past few days. He had even rejected Gu Luoxin’s offer to bring him food. Hence it struck him as odd that the man was giving him a call all of a sudden. The first possibility that popped into his mind was that Noir needed his help for something. He did not even bother entertaining the notion that Noir had called him just because. The man’s distant demeanor had successfully eliminated whatever whimsical fantasies that had once filled his mind.
Gu Luoxin couldn’t help but worry. What could have troubled a Great God like Noir?
This time, the silence from the other side stretched longer, so much that Gu Luoxin began picking on his nails. Blood seeped out of his cuticle, but he did not even take notice of it.
In lieu of an answer, Noir asked once more, "Are you at the dorm?" The voice transmitted over the phone was slightly subdued and muffled due to the sharp whistles of wind in the background. It sounded like he was outside.
"No, no, I went back home yesterday," Gu Luoxin hastened to reply.
At this point, he was almost certain that Noir needed him for something. Oh how he wished he could climb over the network line and appear by Noir’s side the next second! The urgency and agitation nearly caused him to stumble over his words, "How about this? Can you wait for me for two— no, one and a half hours? I will go back to the campus now!"
As he spoke, he had already jumped to his feet and rummaged through the cabinet with his phone pinched between his neck and shoulder. His burning desire to see Noir was one thing, but he couldn’t just leave these dishes out here. After all, he had no idea when he would be coming back again!
The depressed gloom hanging over his head had vanished at some point, turning him energetic once more.
Gu Luoxin had calculated it properly— taking the bus to campus would take several stops, but if he rode the bicycle stored in the garage, he could definitely save a lot of time!
Hearing the noisy clutter from the other end, Noir frowned, obvious disapproval in his tone. "No need," he asserted. "I was just asking casually. You should spend more time with your family."
Gu Luoxin let out a quiet chuckle. "Unfortunately, I’m alone right now."
"Hm?"
Gu Luoxin’s hands did not stop moving as he placed the food containers into a canvas bag, intending to take them away with him. Perhaps because his hands were occupied, or it was the vivid realization that Noir was waiting for him to speak, Gu Luoxin found that his heart no longer felt as heavy as he recounted, "We were supposed to have a meal together, but my uncle couldn’t make it in the end. Geez, he is such a workaholic. How could he still be thinking about work on New Year?" he grumbled under his breath.
Just moments ago, he had clearly acted so sensible when facing Uncle Gu, but now... when it came to Noir, he had no idea why the complaints just rolled off his tongue so smoothly. And the realization caused him to blush. Goodness, why did he sound so soft and... coquettish as if... as if he was acting spoiled?! Was he secretly hoping for Noir to comfort him?!
Better wake up from your dream soon, Xinxin!
Screaming internally, he scrubbed the dirty plates with twice the fervor and managed to get everything done within three minutes. After making sure that the stove was off, he hurriedly slipped on his coat, grabbed his backpack and rushed to the front door, panting slightly, "I’m on my way now, Senior! Please wait for me, I will try to reach there as soon as possible! Hello... hello, Senior?"
Gu Luoxin was startled by the sudden sharp, whistling gust that crackled through the phone. It sounded similar to a static of electricity, making him wonder whether the call had been disconnected due to the network error.
But when he pulled the phone away and glanced at the screen, he found that the timer was still running, counting each second that passed by. Though this time, he could no longer hear Noir’s voice.
The revelation caused Gu Luoxin’s heart to sink. What exactly was going on over there?!
"Hello, Senior? Can you hear me?!" Gu Luoxin had no choice but raise his voice, nearly hollering into the phone speaker. "Why is it so noisy over there? Are you outside right now??"
Stumbling as he put on his shoes, he slammed the front door open and— oh my God, it’s so cold!!!
The biting chill that blasted him on the face was a harsh contrast to the warmth of the house, sending a faint tremor coursing through his body. Gu Luoxin sneezed twice, but he did not slow down his pace as he made his way to the garage on the side of the house, pulling out an old bicycle from within. He had forgotten to wear gloves in his haste, and the moment his fingers wrapped around the icy metal handlebars, a sharp cold seeped into his skin, turning it numb in an instant.
Nevertheless, like a warrior who feared neither frost or fire, Gu Luoxin persisted.
He was about to swing his leg over and mount the bicycle when Noir’s voice sounded once more, this time startlingly clear as though the man was mouthing the words right into the speaker, "I see you."
The words traveled to Gu Luoxin’s ears with crystal clarity, halting him on his tracks and leaving his mind blank for a second.
S–See who? Me???
He instinctively looked around, but his neighborhood was so desolate that not even a single person could be seen. Who would be so foolish to go out in this kind of weather? Oh, that’s right, there was him— a foolish Xinxin.
The point was, there was nary a single soul in sight aside from himself, so how could Noir say that—
All of a sudden, the line of Gu Luoxin’s thoughts screeched to a halt.
He jerked his head up, his eyes widening, just in time to see a familiar figure descending from the sky. A gust of wind stirred the fresh snow as the tip of Noir’s feet landed in his courtyard with effortless grace, his majestic bone wings flapping behind him. The wind tousled his brown curls, revealing his forehead and sharp features in all their breathtaking glory. Clad in a white turtleneck and long trench coat that accentuated his tall frame, he looked almost surreal... like a snow prince or a impossibly gorgeous elf who had just stepped out of an oil painting.
With a loud clatter, Gu Luoxin’s bicycle crashed to the ground.
"Holy shit..." he blurted out, jaws hanging slack in shock and astonishment.
