Chapter 542: A Little High

Jin Jiuchi felt his blood boiling as a layer of crimson haze shrouded his vision. The restlessness and agitation he had been painstakingly suppressed since he was separated from Shen Nianzu finally erupted at this moment, corroding every last bit of his sanity and leaving nothing but a single resolve— kill! He had to kill them and tear them apart limb by limb!

A murderous growl emanated from his throat, every cell in his body buzzing and thrumming in cruel anticipation. But just as he opened his jaws wide, ready to unleash his fiery wrath on the first victim, the world suddenly spun before his eyes.

It felt like he was riding a rollercoaster at five times the speed. The scenery rapidly receded around him like a cicada shedding its shell, and the long-lost sensation returned to his body once more, leaving his body and mind utterly disoriented. He was so dizzy that he could no longer discern his surroundings.

A piercing ache struck the center of his chest, compelling him to take his first gasp of fresh air after a long while, and an odd sensation filled his entire mouth, making him feel like he had just eaten a mouthful of dirt.

"He’s alive! Ahhh, he’s alive, isn’t he?! I just saw his chest move!"

"Mn, he is."

The loud shriek piercing Jin Jiuchi’s sensitive eardrums was akin to sharp nails scratching across a chalkboard, elevating his simmering wrath into a volcano ready to erupt.

He snapped his eyes open, still clouded with a murderous haze, and his lips pulled back into a silent snarl. Every fiber of his being was ready to destroy anything that stood in his path. But then he took in the face hovering above him – a face so delicate and exquisite like a doll, staring at him with a mixture of concern, relief and overwhelming joy – and everything abruptly screeched to a halt.

Jin Jiuchi stared into those breathtaking pale purple eyes, dazed.

His pupils, which had once dilated into needle points in his berserk state, slowly widened until they became fully expanded. Just like a ferocious beast retracting its teeth and claws upon coming across something that utterly captivated it.

A-An angel...?

"Am I..." he began to speak, only to choke and cough at the strange substance clogging his throat. He did not think much and swallowed it before trying again, slightly breathless, "Am I... in Heaven...?"

Shen Nianzu had placed his ear closer when he saw Jin Jiuchi’s mouth moving for fear that the latter was feeling uncomfortable somewhere, but upon hearing what the man said, he pulled back again, the concern in his eyes morphing into pure amusement and exasperation.

In a strange whimsical mood, he played along, "No," he pinched Jin Jiuchi’s cheek in a teasing gesture, "You’re in Hell."

Jin Jiuchi nodded seriously like it was the one and only truth he could accept. "Then you... you must be the prettiest demon around... hehe..." his weak whisper came out nearly in a slur, and after saying those words, his face broke into a dopey, infatuated smile.

Gu Luoxin, who had been ecstatic about his teammate’s revival from death while spinning in circles with Lucius in his arms, now lifted the black cat to cover his face, his shoulders trembling minutely. Heavens, he could not do this. He could not keep watching – it was too damn embarrassing! What the hell was up with that pick-up line? Could Jin Jiuchi get any more cringy than this?!

"X-Xiao Shen..." he called out in a small, trembling voice. "He... what is he..."

He could not bring himself to ask, ’Is his brain broken?’

Jin Jiuchi could not even recognize his beloved Nian’er anymore. Something must have gone wrong with his brain! How tragic! Gu Luoxin lamented in tears. That silly husky wasn’t even that smart to begin with, and now his level of intelligence was lowered again?!

Shen Nianzu intended to stand up, but Jin Jiuchi promptly seized his arm and stared at him with a gaze so intense he might as well burn a hole into Shen Nianzu’s face, leaving him with no other choice but to stay put for the time being.

With a helpless expression, he addressed Gu Luoxin and Noir, despite the latter showing no concern whatsoever. "Don’t worry, I think... he’s just a little high."

Huh?? Gu Luoxin was bamboozled. He couldn’t resist peeking over Lucius’ furry belly to give Jin Jiuchi a scrutinizing look, though the other person’s gaze had been fixated on Shen Nianzu from the very first second he opened his eyes, as though afraid the ’pretty demon’ who awakened him from his slumber would vanish if he so much as moved his gaze away. He was indeed acting a little strange and more sticky than usual, but...

"Can someone get high from the revival potion?" Gu Luoxin voiced his confusion aloud, with the black cat echoing along with a ’meow’.

Of course, Shen Nianzu was also none the wiser, for he had no other examples to study from. But Jin Jiuchi indeed looked high at the moment, thus Gu Luoxin and Noir were forced to listen to their cringy and toothache-inducing conversation:

"What’s your name, pretty demon?"

"Shen Nianzu."

"Wow, what a pretty name! Hehe... why don’t you ask my name as well?"

"... What’s your name?"

"Tsk, how can I remember something as unimportant as that when my mind is full of you?"

Jin Jiuchi asked again after a pause, "How did I end up in Hell?"

Shen Nianzu, somewhat impatient but trying to hold back his temper, flashed a sweet yet chilling smile, "What do you think?"

"Well, if you ask me..." The tail end of Jin Jiuchi’s voice rose into a silly giggle. "I think it’s to meet you ah! Don’t you think this is fate? That’s right, we must be fated to each other!"

"Right??" he tugged on Shen Nianzu’s hand when he received no response.

Be patient, Shen Nianzu, he has just come back to life. Shen Nianzu took a deep breath to restrain his anger before he could punch the man in the heat of the moment. Maybe the pain could make Jin Jiuchi come back to his senses faster. But before he could prove his hypothesis, his eyes met with Jin Jiuchi’s bright and enthusiastic ones, and all of a sudden, Shen Nianzu felt a strange impulse akin to a kitten’s claw scratching at his heart. The idea consumed him so quickly and thoroughly that he could not resist at all.

Suppressing a smile, Shen Nianzu feigned a regretful expression. "Too bad," he sighed. "I have a lover already."

"WHAT?!" Jin Jiuchi took to the devastating news as though his entire world was crumbling apart. Redness crept up on the corners of his eyes, and his features distorted in rage until he looked completely deranged. He grabbed hold of Shen Nianzu’s shoulders, yet he dared not exert much strength for fear of crushing the delicate bones, leaving him trembling all over. "Who..." He gritted out with much difficulty, "Who is it?! I will kill him— no, I will make him suffer a fate worse than death! He dares to covet my pretty demon!"

"Hmm, I wonder who~" Shen Nianzu almost sing-songed as he completely relished in the current situation.

Gu Luoxin and Noir, who were forgotten on the corner: "..."

Dumbfounded, Gu Luoxin stared at the barest smirk curling on the corner of Shen Nianzu’s lips and felt like he could spot a pair of devil’s horns on top of the silver hair and a long tail swaying leisurely behind him. Holy shit...

As expected of his S Big Boss who could tame a nightmare creature! That’s hella cool!

Looking at the anxious and despairing Jin Jiuchi who looked like he was ready to kill, a mix of pity and schadenfreude arose in Gu Luoxin’s heart. He even wanted to laugh a bit. Too bad they could not get their phones into this Cycle, otherwise he would have recorded this scene to blackmail Jin Jiuchi in the future!
