Chapter 535: Flying Spit
Chapter 535: Flying Spit
Oops, Jin Jiuchi thought. Had he stepped on a landmine...?
Come to think of it, the other players did mention that they would trigger a death condition once the ghosts realized that they’re not among their ranks. Therefore, when he brought up the Mad Hatter’s tea party, the ghost lady immediately saw through his real identity. After all, he was still a guest from afar back then – a human through and through!
"Why..." the ghost lady tightened her grip on Jin Jiuchi’s shoulder until her nails nearly dug into his body as though aiming to crush his bones. The eye which had turned into an empty socket glowed in an eerie scarlet as her flesh continued to disintegrate to reveal the bones beneath. "Why didn’t you say anything? Are you really not a ghost? ARE YOU—?!!" her pitch rose into a sharp screech, brimming with a mixture of hostility and excitement.
Despite the commotion they caused, oddly enough, no one turned or even so much as gave them a glance. Everyone was still absorbed in their own dance, and that included the players who had other plans in mind.
The ghost lady did intend to inflict some pain on Jin Jiuchi. Ghosts generally lost their perception of pain after death, except when they unluckily triggered the death condition. If that were to happen, they would then experience the excruciating agony of their soul being shredded apart and devoured by tens of ghosts until nothing remained. The ghost lady became excited just by the thought of it, her breath turning uneven. She was looking forward to Jin Jiuchi’s pained and terrified expression when his identity was exposed but when she took a closer look, she suddenly realized that... this person did not seem to be scared at all?!
Let alone scared, he even looked indignant as though she had mistakenly accused him of a great crime.
"How am I not a ghost?!" Jin Jiuchi retorted righteously as he took a large step back, opening up a considerable distance between them. He gestured at his own body, "Look at me— look at how glowing I am, which part of me doesn’t look like a ghost?! You can’t be blind, can you, Miss? Don’t think you can be mean to me and bully me just because I’m being friendly! I can tell Nian’er to... to... wait, what’s the word again?" He tilted his head and thought hard for two seconds before resuming with zeal, "Ah, that’s right! I can tell Nian’er to SUE you until you go bankrupt for tarnishing my reputation!"
He thoughtfully added after a beat, snarling with his teeth bared, "Don’t even think of underestimating him either! He’s super capable, I told you!"
The ghost lady was flummoxed. The ghost lady had no idea what was going on. The ghost lady felt like there must be something wrong with both her eyes and her ears. Otherwise how could this person not only not kneel down and beg for mercy, but unleash a tirade of furious complaints instead— spit and all?
Her grip on Jin Jiuchi’s shoulder lightened as the speed in which her body turned into skeleton ceased to a halt. "B–But you..." she sluggishly wiped the spit that had landed on her face, her mind racing to come up with a solid argument. "You were talking about the Mad Hatter’s—"
"Damn right, I was!" Jin Jiuchi interrupted her with fervor, his spit flying all over the place. "And so what? It’s been hours since the party, okay? Hours! Anything can happen in the middle. A baby can be delivered, the earth can split open, the sky can fall, and of course someone can die! Do I need to tell you how I die? Tsk tsk, I didn’t expect you to be so slow when you clearly knew I’m a new ghost around here!" The disdainful gaze Jin Jiuchi cast upon her made the ghost lady flush red. Finally, her appearance returned to that of a proper ghost— sweet and demure. It was hard to believe that she had almost transformed into a manic and violent skeleton moments ago.
"I–I deeply apologize..." she clenched her hands together, her face marred with deep shame. "I have wrongly accused you."
"Hmph!" Jin Jiuchi crossed his arms in satisfaction.
Deep down, he was actually a little disappointed that she did not press further about how he died. He had been looking forward to reiterating his brutal and savage fight with the Divine Oracle— of course this time it would be a whole new version than the one he had told the other players. It would be a shame to let his overflowing creativity go to waste, after all!
After dawdling for a while, Jin Jiuchi couldn’t resist prodding once more, "...you really don’t want to know?"
Assuming that his anger still had not abated, the ghost lady lowered her head further and shook it again and again, so deeply mortified that she wished she could slip into a cervice somewhere. "No, no, no, there’s no need... I believe you now! I’m truly sorry, please forgive me..." the ghost lady was so distressed that she nearly burst into tears, her shoulders trembling delicately.
Unfortunately, the man before him just happened to be a brute who had no tender feelings toward the fairer sex. Disappointment leaked into Jin Jiuchi’s eyes as he clicked his tongue, hating iron for not becoming steel. Before he could press for the third time, however, he abruptly caught sight of some sneaky movements on the edge of the clearing. A few players were whispering to each other, their behavior reeking of ill intentions.
It couldn’t be...
Had they found the location of the rewards?!
No, he couldn’t allow that to happen! He had to be the first to get his hands on the rewards, or else Nian’er would be thoroughly disappointed! Jin Jiuchi no longer had time to waste with the ghost lady. Waving his hand, he told her in a hurry, "Okay, okay, as long as you don’t accuse other ghosts in the future. Now, shoo. I have an important mission to tackle!" His figure had already weaved through the crowd by the time his last words fell, leaving the ghost lady at a state of utter loss and confusion.
Jin Jiuchi jogged all the way to the center of the dancing arena, his mind racing nonstop. He swore he had never used as many brain cells as he did tonight, and that was all because Shen Nianzu, the brain of the group, was not here! Alas, there was no one Jin Jiuchi could rely on but himself, so he could only suck it up and bear through it all by his lonesome.
Think, Jin Jiuchi— think! How can you stand out from all these ghosts and become the final winner?!
Without warning, Jin Jiuchi halted on his tracks, his gaze surveying the masses who swayed and twirled to the slow music. His heterochromatic eyes slowly brightened. He knew... he knew what he should do!
If all went according to plan, he would be crowned the champion of the competition for sure!
