Chapter 518: Sausage

Gu Luoxin blinked, "Huh? What did you just..."

Noir’s voice just now was too low, causing Gu Luoxin to miss the second half of his sentence. But just as he was about to ask again, a long and fierce growl emanated from his own stomach, loud enough that it attracted the attention of Shen Nianzu and Jin Jiuchi who were engrossed in their own pink bubbles.

"Ah!" Gu Luoxin yelped, wide-eyed in fluster and mortification. "T–This is—"

"Damn it, Xinxin, do you have a T-Rex in your stomach?!" Jin Jiuchi burst out into a fit of laughter as he roused into a sitting position, angering Gu Luoxin so much that a train of steam almost billowed out of his ears.

He wouldn’t have reacted as strongly had this been under normal circumstances. But the main problem was, Noir was here! The person he liked was right beside him, listening to his stomach gurgling and roaring akin to a– a freaking dinosaur! Arghh, this was all Jin Jiuchi, this pig teammate’s fault! And worse, this was not the first time the other person had rubbed salt directly onto his wound and relished in his suffering!

Was there still kindness and camaraderie in this world?!

Before Gu Luoxin could resort to violence out of sheer rage and drag Jin Jiuchi down with him, however, an item was being held right under his nose, followed by an appetizing and mouth-watering aroma.

T–This was—

"A sausage?!" Gu Luoxin and Jin Jiuchi’s jaws hung open, shock and astonishment evident on their faces.

Gu Luoxin stammered out, his round eyes flicking between Noir and the sausage back and forth, "S–Senior, you..."

"Mn," Noir offered once more, still as cool as cucumber. "For you."

Gu Luoxin felt like he had never heard anything more beautiful than these two words. He accepted the sausage with both hands with a flattered expression like a vessel receiving a reward the Emperor had bestowed upon him.

Across from them, Jin Jiuchi’s drool nearly overflowed from his mouth and watered the soil beneath him as his eyes were glued to the meat in Gu Luoxin’s hand. "No, wait—" he forced himself to look away, albeit the bobbing motion on his throat had betrayed his inner desire. "Where did you get this sausage from?!" he questioned Noir, his eyes sharp and fierce like that of a vulture. Where had his listless and vulnerable self from earlier gone?

In response, Noir glanced at him like he was a mentally disabled person, which he truly was. "Green," he said curtly, too lazy to waste even one more word on this person.

Players could not bring their own possession into the Cycle aside from props and skill cards. In exchange, however despicable or tormenting the Cycle was, the Nightmare would never truly let them starve to death. It’s just a question whether they dared to eat or not.

In this Christmas-themed Cycle, food, water, and medicine could be procured from the green boxes scattered across the forest and also ones the helicopter would drop each hour. Therefore, the sausage in Noir’s hands could only come from the green box. It was a question that did not need to be asked to begin with.

However, Jin Jiuchi firmly suspected that Noir was lying.

Otherwise how could he, with his unparalleled and handsome nose, only manage to obtain biscuits and bread all this while?! Wasn’t the disparity a little too large?!

Impossible! That left only one possibility – Noir must be playing foul!

When he relayed his doubts and listed the suspicious points with the flair of a criminal prosecutor interrogating a defendant, Noir did not even deign to spare him a glance. Instead, he fished out another packaged sausage from his pocket like a magician performing a trick and, under Jin Jiuchi’s expectant gaze, handed it over to Gu Luoxin.

"Eat more," he said.

Jin Jiuchi’s expression instantly sank.

"HAHAHA!" With delicious sausage in his mouth and a new one held in his hand, Gu Luoxin pointed at Jin Jiuchi’s nose and cackled without restraint. "Do you understand now, Da Shen? It has nothing to do with whose nose works better. It’s Senior’s luck that’s a thousand times better than yours!" He munched on the sausage with his eyes squinted in bliss, feeling like he could finally pay back all the grievances he had suffered twofold. The ordinary snack became all the more savory when combined with Jin Jiuchi’s darkened face. Goodness, this must be the most delicious sausage in the whole world!

And all of this was only possible because of the emerald-eyed man beside him.

"Thank you, Senior!" Gu Luoxin flashed him a smile so wide and radiant that his eyes nearly bent into crescents, pure and childlike joy emanating from every inch of his body.

In return, Noir’s eyes softened ever so slightly, the change so subtle it could have been mistaken for a trick of light. Perhaps not even he noticed the faint ripple of emotion stirring within him. "Mn," he replied, his tone as steady as ever.

Jin Jiuchi became more aggrieved the more he thought of the injustice he had just suffered. Seething in rage and frustration, he was left with no other option but to turn to the jade doll for help. "Nian’er!" He cried out indignantly, but Shen Nianzu merely raised his eyelids lazily. Although he looked very cute and lovely doing so, Jin Jiuchi had more important matters to discuss, "Look at Xinxin! Look at how stingy he is! He doesn’t even want to share half his sausage with me! Are we still teammates?!"

Gu Luoxin rolled his eyes hard, but when Shen Nianzu turned to look at him, he immediately plastered a sweet smile on his face, offering, "Would you like a sausage, Xiao Shen? It’s so fragrant, chewy, and yummy!"

Jin Jiuchi gasped, unable to believe what he was seeing. "You even want to bribe my Nian’er?!" he clutched his chest, seemingly as though he was about to have a heart attack.

Faintly amused, Shen Nianzu shook his head and replied with a ’no, thank you’ before turning to Jin Jiuchi, clicking his tongue in exasperation. "Noir gave it to Xinxin, so it’s up to him whether he wants to share it with you or not. Why are you being so dramatic over a single sausage? Haven’t you eaten your fill at the tea party earlier?"

"B–But..." Jin Jiuchi sputtered, feeling a twinge of guilty conscience prickling at him – if that even existed in his dictionary. Sure, he was the one who had eaten the most at the tea party while Shen Nianzu and Gu Luoxin did not even get to take a bite— but this and that were two different matters altogether! Even if he was full from cakes, he still hadn’t had any sausage yet! Alas, in the face of Shen Nianzu’s stern glare, he dared not make any excuse for himself and could only sulk on the corner like a wilted cabbage.

Gu Luoxin took it all in with utter glee. What everyone said was correct— revenge was a dish best served cold! Justice might be late but it would never be absent!

Ha, take that, Da Shen!!!

After wolfing down the whole sausage, Gu Luoxin felt satisfied and comforted – both physically and psychologically. He looked at the untouched, still wrapped sausage in his hand before tentatively prodding the man beside him. "Um, Senior..." he extended his hand, intending to give it back. Earlier, he had only received it to spite Jin Jiuchi and it wasn’t until now that he felt a little embarrassed. Getting to eat one was already more than enough for him, hogging two would be too shameless. "How about you take this back? I haven’t touched it yet, don’t worry. In case you’re hungry later..."

However, Noir shook his head and refused. "Keep it. I still have more."

Gu Luoxin was startled. "You still—"

"YOU STILL HAVE MORE?!!" Jin Jiuchi cut in, utterly flabbergasted and dumbfounded. This time, even Shen Nianzu appeared a little surprised. They had relied on Jin Jiuchi’s nose all the way and managed to secure a few packages of biscuits and bread, which he thought was already better than most.

Yet as it turned out, compared to Noir, they were considered dirt poor!

Holy shit, wasn’t the man’s luck simply off the charts?!

The SJG trio looked at Noir as though he was a wealth-beckoning cat statue, sending an inexplicable chill rising on the man’s spine.
