Chapter 470: Girl And Her Fairy (2)

Unfortunately, life did not proceed as in fairy tales. Happily ever after was not real. Just because she had managed to escape from the confines of her former home and settle in the palace did not mean that only happiness awaited her. Sure, her husband was extremely loving, loyal, and caring, yet he could never fill the void left behind by Lumina’s continuous absence.

After entering the palace, Lumina, who had promised that she would always be there for her, kept disappearing with the excuse that her life was no longer her own, and she’d better spend more time with her husband instead.

"Now that you’ve found your true love," Lumina offered her a beautiful smile she loved the most, yet her words were akin to a cold knife stabbing into her heart, spreading a burst of chill around, "you won’t need me again. You’ve already achieved your happiness!"

What was true love? She wondered. Was it the tightening of her throat whenever she swallowed the words she wanted to speak? Was it the chill that permeated her limbs each night she laid in her husband’s embrace? Or was it the overwhelming sense of loneliness and sadness that engulfed her even when she was in a room full of people?

Tell me, Lu. Even after I’ve come to this point, why did I feel like I was happier back in that house, when there were only the two of us alone?

To ease her loneliness, she could only take out her beloved glass slippers whenever she was alone and caressed it gently as though reaching for the warmth that she had once basked in— the warmth that had begun to fade from her memory.

But even this small comfort could not alleviate the trails she faced within the palace walls.

Her life in the royal court was far from smooth. Many politicians and noblemen were not happy with the Prince’s decision to wed a commoner, and they decided to make it known to her loud and clear with pointed remarks and subtle jabs. Despite the outward displays of admiration from the ladies at tea parties, she could tell they were mocking her behind her back. In this regard, her stepmother and stepsister, who blatantly showed their hostility in front of her face, seemed almost preferable.

She had no friends, no allies, and the only person whom she could depend on was her husband, who had recently ascended to the throne.

Yet even his attempts to defend her often backfired, as it only painted her as a weak and helpless Queen who could do nothing but hide behind her husband’s back.

But she told herself that she should persevere, because this was the life granted to her by Lumina.

She told herself as such every single time she felt suffocated within the palace walls. But all resolve came crumbling down years later, when she stumbled upon undeniable evidence of her husband’s infidelity, and the other party was none other than... her stepsister!

The one person she had believed she could rely on, her stalwart ally and faithful husband, was suddenly torn from her grasp. It felt as though the ground had been ripped out from beneath her feet, leaving her unsteady and adrift.

Amidst her tears, she struggled to pinpoint the source of her anguish. Was it the betrayal of her husband, who had vowed to love her for eternity only to sleep with her stepsister behind her back? Or was it the realization that she was on the brink of wasting this dream life Lumina had bestowed upon her? Perhaps it was the overwhelming sense of inadequacy she felt about herself?

"Why are you crying again?" A familiar, comforting voice cut through the turmoil in her mind, causing her to raise her head with a gasp. There, she found Lumina’s tiny body hovering in front of her, helping her wipe away the tears on her face. "Did you have a fight with Caen? You need to face your problems in order to grow stronger, remember? Come on, wipe your tears. You’re meant to be experiencing the happiest time of your life right now. I saw your son just now, he will surely grow up to be a looker like his mother!"

Happiest time... She burst out laughing when she heard that. She doubled over with laughter, yet tears continued to cascade down her cheeks. When was the last time she had truly felt happiness again? What an irony. She seemed to have forgotten how it felt to be happy.

"What’s wrong with you?" Lumina’s voice was tinged with concern, her eyes searching hers for answers.

Still with a twisted smile on her face, she gazed at the little fairy and posed her question, her voice thick with desperation, "Lu, if I were to leave this place, would you come with me?"

"L–Leave?!" Lumina exclaimed in shock. "You want to leave the palace? Why?!"

Instead of answering, she pressed on, her tone pleading, "Let’s leave, okay? Let us leave this place behind for good. We can find a house where it’s just the two of us. We can go back to that time..." the only time she had ever felt genuine happiness, she reminisced bitterly.

But Lumina’s response was like a dagger to her already wounded heart, becoming the last straw that broke the camel’s back. "I–I can’t!" She retreated with a troubled look. "I can’t leave with you. I have no idea what you’re going through, but you’re a strong woman. I believe you can definitely overcome this! Besides, there are so many poor girls out there who rely on my magic to shape their destinies..."

"You... help others too?" The realization hit her like a thunderbolt, her world suddenly tilting on its axis.

"Of course!" Lumina responded earnestly. "I am the fairy godmother, after all. It’s my purpose to bring love and happiness to those who need it the most!"

This possibility had never crossed her mind before, but in retrospect, she should have seen it coming, shouldn’t she? Lumina was kind-hearted, she would never turn away from those in need.

Now that she had become a Queen, now that she had achieved a life that others could only dream of... it was only natural that Lumina would move on to others.

Left alone in the solitude of her chamber, she sank to the ground, laughter bubbling up from her throat as she buried her face in her hands. "Ha... hahaha..."

Did you wipe their tears like you did mine, Lu? Did you cheer for them, hug them, and sing them soothing lullabies? You told me that I don’t need you anymore, but why can’t you see that... I need you now more than ever?

In the end, the people she cared for drifted away one by one. In the end, she remained all alone. Why? Why would they leave when she needed them the most? Why did they abandon her? Why?!

Amidst the chaotic whirlwind of her thoughts, a dark and sinister voice whispered inside her mind, "Do you wish to seek revenge?"
