Chapter 354: Fallen Star

"Chirp chirp chirp!"

Gu Luoxin was certain that his soul had bounced out of his body for a few seconds. His head was ringing with a deafening noise, and when he came to, he found himself sprawled on the ground again with Toki hovering anxiously above him. He managed to summon a reassuring smile and patted the baby’s head before propping himself up by an elbow.

"... I’m fine," he said, his own voice sounding muffled to his ears.

Grimacing, Gu Luoxin swept his gaze over the surroundings and witnessed an intense battle unlike anything he had ever seen before.

Light and darkness suppressed each other, and the shockwaves they created were so powerful that he felt like his brain had suffered a concussion. Even though he had been flung to the wall in the far corner, he still felt his skin prickling with goosebumps from the massive turbulence in the air.

Just what kind of terrifying player was his leader?

With a gasp, he spotted Noir and Ying’s unconscious body a short distance away. When the first explosion occured, both of them had been the closest to the epicenter of the chaos. That must be the reason why Gu Luoxin could regain his consciousness faster. Of course, he could not disregard the possibility that Toki had protected him again.

Gu Luoxin pushed himself to stand and carefully dragged Noir and Ying away from the tumultuous battle in the center.

After making sure that both of them were alive and breathing, Gu Luoxin finally turned his attention to the two little Jin Jiuchis who had their eyes locked onto the battle ahead. The sight of the black and crimson marks over their bodies broke his heart to pieces, but he resolutely fought back the urge to cry.

He might not be able to assist Shen Nianzu, but at least he could ensure the safety of his teammates!

With that resolution in mind, Gu Luoxin rushed toward the two children and grabbed hold of their tiny arms. "Come on, don’t stand too close!"

However, the two of them acted as though they did not notice his presence at all, their eyes remained fixated on the mystical battlefield. Gu Luoxin saw their lips quivering and moving to form words, and when he leaned down to listen, what he heard immediately caused his blood to run cold.

"Oh no..."

"Nian’er is going to lose... he’s going to lose..."

What?

Gu Luoxin jerked his head up so quickly that his neck issued an audible crack. There, through the formidable interplay of light and darkness, he witnessed in horror as Shen Nianzu shot forward with his blade aimed at Medeia, only for the said weapon to shatter into pieces before it could pierce into the witch’s heart.

Icy Veil Blade, the unique-level prop that had accompanied Shen Nianzu starting from the Shishen Apartment until now – and perhaps even longer than that – was broken by the very last barrier that protected Medeia’s heart.

In the end, Shen Nianzu bet his everything on this single attack and lost.

The witch was no less stunned by this sudden turn of events, as she had been certain that she would meet her demise again for sure. But soon her bafflement transformed into pure ecstasy. She threw her head back and cackled away, delighted. "Father! Oh, my great father in Hell, are you finally willing to bestow your protection upon the humble me?"

Before Gu Luoxin could react, the twins broke free from his grip and rushed forward, screaming in terror, "Nian’er!!"

Shen Nianzu felt himself plummeting from the sky, despair washing over him. Even though his ears could no longer work, he could somehow tell that Medeia must be laughing at him. Laughing at his desperation, his futile and pathetic struggle, his failure.

That was just how the nightmare creatures were – arrogant, condescending and sinister.

Shattered pieces of the blade glittered around him as though reminding him how fleeting the lifespan of a star was. He had burned himself to the limit, and now he had to bear the consequences for it.

He had fallen. He had lost.

The muscles in his body refused to heed his orders and he could no longer muster even a shred of strength in his body. However, before he could crash to the ground, he felt two pairs of arms catching him securely. As he strained to crack open his heavy eyelids, Shen Nianzu gazed upon the tearful faces of the twins. Their lips were moving, but Shen Nianzu could not catch any of their words through his fading senses.

Ah, he was mistaken. Not all nightmare creatures were like Medeia. There were also some who were nice to the point of foolishness, with the twins before him as a prime example.

Don’t cry, Shen Nianzu wished to tell them. Quickly run away and don’t look back.

However, his voice had abandoned him, and he could no longer feel his entire body.

"Nian’er... no, Nian’er!!"

Tears flowed out uncontrollably from the twins’ eyes, their expressions stricken with sheer panic. Shen Nianzu’s body felt abnormally light when they caught him earlier. His skin had been torn open and his flesh was scorched black, drenching him in blood from head to toe. They couldn’t find an intact patch of skin on him, and furthermore, his leg was...

"No, Nian’er! You can’t die! You can’t leave us!" Silver-haired Jin Jiuchi cradled Shen Nianzu in his arms, crying so hard that he struggled to catch his breath.

Beside him, his horrified twin was desperately trying to staunch the blood flow from Shen Nianzu’s leg to no avail, since the flesh, muscles and bones had been blasted away, leaving behind a gruesome stump. Unlike his brother, his wept in silence as his small body shook from the force of his fear, grief and sorrow.

They could feel it with every inch of their soul – Shen Nianzu was dying.

Their Nian’er was going to die soon, and it was all because of—

"Foolish human!" Medeia spat out with sinister glee. "Do you think you can challenge me at your current level? If not for you employing dirty tricks last time, do you believe I would have fallen in your hands?" The more she recalled what had just transpired earlier, the more satisfied she was and she couldn’t resist laughing out loud.

Until an inhumane growl echoed through the air, drawing her attraction.

The two Jin Jiuchis, with their messy and bloody appearance, confronted her. Fury and vengeance boiled in their red-rimmed eyes. "How dare you... how dare you harm Nian’er! We will make you regret it!"

Again, the witch burst out laughing, even more uproarious this time. She laughed so hard that her stomach cramped up and tears squeezed out of her eyes. "You?" She scoffed, her smile twisted in incredulity. "You two want to make me regret it? Are you capable?"

They weren’t.

The twins were born as incomplete individuals. Let alone strong enough to match a high-caliber nightmare creature in strength, they couldn’t even grow up and shed off their childish appearance.

But what if... what if they had a way to solve this? What if they had a way to get stronger and avenge their lovely little Nian’er?

Medeia’s laughter came to an abrupt halt as she took in the spectacle unfolding before her, astonished and disgusted in equal measure. "What the hell," she couldn’t help but curse under her breath.

"No—!" Gu Luoxin let out a hysterical scream, his eyes bloodshot with tears. "You two... stop! Please stop!!!"

Instead of pouncing on the witch, the twins began tearing into each other.
