Chapter 178: Superhero Without A Cape
Chapter 178: Superhero Without A Cape
In another space.
Gu Luoxin clung to the wall for support as he struggled to catch his breath, droplets of sweat trickling down his cheeks. He had no idea how long he had been running, but he was still stuck on the second floor of the ship. He had shouted and called out to his teammates to no avail, as his voice was entrapped here with no way out, just like him.
His face was pale as he slowly slid down to the ground, pulling his knees up to his chest and making himself as small as possible. Involuntarily, a sob escaped his lips. "Guys, where are you..." he whispered in a raspy voice that lacked strength.
When he woke up in this place, he was terrified to death. He found himself all alone, surrounded by nothing but rows of tightly shut doors and neverending hallways. The walls seemed to cave in on him, suffocating him with an overwhelming sense of dread. Even his footsteps scared him as it made him think that something ominous was lurking behind.
Time dragged on with the pace of a crawling snail, leaving him physically and mentally drained. He even thought that he would die here all alone, swallowed by the ever-present silence and solitude. But then, just as his spirit sank deeper into the abyss—
BANG!
A wooden door was torn open and slammed against the opposite wall. Startled by the loud sound, Gu Luoxin raised his head with a gasp to find Noir walking out of the door, with Lucius perched on his shoulder like always.
At that moment, he was not exaggerating when he said that the man was covered in a dazzling halo, the light almost burning into his retina. Even Lucius’ black fur looked particularly glossy and sleek, making it the most dashing cat Gu Luoxin had ever seen. But he dared not close his eyes, because what if everything was only a dream and the man disappeared after he blinked? After all, what were the odds that someone truly showed up right when he was on the verge of breaking down?
As such, he could only stare at Noir in a daze, and he was still unable to come back to his senses when the emerald-eyed man approached and stood before him.
Noir scrutinized his shrimp-like posture silently before asking, "...What are you doing there?"
It was such a simple and nonchalant question, but Gu Luoxin felt as though he had been dragged out of the choking darkness to welcome the holy light. "I..." he opened his mouth to answer, only to choke on his tears. Oh God, how embarrassing! To burst out into tears in front of someone else— a person he had only met for two days at that! Gu Luoxin tried to wipe his tears, yet it kept rolling down his cheeks unstoppably, as if venting out the fear and stress he had been enduring all this while.
In the end, he could only choke out amidst the sobs, "S–Sorry... I’m v-very sorry, Great God. I’m just..."
Noir took another look at him and tossed Lucius to him. Shocked, the black cat let out a grievous ’mroow!’ as it flailed its limbs in midair.
Gu Luoxin scrambled to catch the little ancestor, dumbfounded. T–This was...
Alas, he was not given the chance to ask because in the next moment, Noir decisively turned around, strode to the nearest door and kicked it open like he did earlier, tearing it from its hinges. Gu Luoxin’s jaws were agape as he watched Noir move to another door and kick it down again, then again and again...
Only when the little ancestor snuggled deeper into his arms did Gu Luoxin return to his senses. Having been trapped in this strange maze for an indeterminable amount of time, his body had long become weak and cold. But now, he could feel the heat radiating from the black cat’s soft body, warming him from head to toe. As he stared at Noir who had moved a few meters ahead, an inconceivable thought crossed his mind.
Did Great God bestow upon him the divine cat to... cheer him up?
Gathering his strength, Gu Luoxin scrambled to his feet, cradling the little ancestor close to him. He trotted after Noir, staring at the space beyond the doors which revealed nothing but pitch black emptiness. He shuddered and quickly caught up to the man, sticking close like a small aggrieved animal, "G–Great God..." when Noir cast him a faint look, he swallowed before asking in an extremely formal tone, "You... what are you doing?"
"Finding a way," was all Noir said before he returned to his task. He showed no restraint at all as he kicked down each door, tearing them open with force.
Upon seeing the void beyond the door, Gu Luoxin suddenly grasped the situation, "Oh, oh! The reason why you kick so many doors down is to find another place just like how you found me?"
"Mn," Noir affirmed.
Gu Luoxin stared at him with sparkling eyes. Right now, in his eyes, Noir was no different from a superhero without a cape. He knew that if it was himself, he would not dare to break down the door even if someone fed him a leopard’s gall. However, with Noir here, he unexpectedly found the fear that had been weighing down on him vanished without a trace. Not only that, he was also eager to help and assist in any way he could.
If it was kicking down doors, even he could do it!
"Great God, Great God, let me—" He wanted to offer his help, but Noir instantly shot him down.
"No need," he said. "Just hold on to Lucius."
"Meow~" the black cat sang with its eyes narrowed as though agreeing with Noir’s words.
Gu Luoxin had no idea whether to laugh or cry. What to do? At present, his image in Noir’s eyes must be a weakling, a scaredy cat who could do nothing but whine and cry. He swore that he was not such a person! He was capable and powerful too, though his heart was just a liiitle weak. But how should he prove it to Noir? Should he summon his kingkong and let the man know how mighty he actually was?
As Gu Luoxin was contemplating over his choices, Noir already broke down more than ten doors and still showed no signs of breaking out into sweat. Until the next moment, he kicked down another door and—
"No, no, this is not fair, I told you. Didn’t you also dance along with me? So you can’t just la—ah! What is that sound?! Scared me to death!"
Gu Luoxin’s eyes lit up when he heard that voice. "Da Shen! Da Shen, it’s us!" He rushed forward and saw that the door in front of Noir was connected to another identical hallway. Gu Luoxin poked his head out and saw Jin Jiuchi standing in front of an open door. "Who are you talking to? Have you found—" he raised his gaze to Jin Jiuchi’s face, and all the words were promptly lost in his throat.
"Y–Your eyes..."
After their close interaction over the past few weeks, of course Gu Luoxin knew that Jin Jiuchi’s eyes were originally silver. But currently, one of those eyes had turned pitch black, giving him a unique and eye-catching pair of heterochromia eyes. Not only that, he also had a golden slit pupil just like the rampaging beast in the previous Cycle!
Gu Luoxin sucked in cold air. W–What was going on here? Alas, before he could even gather his thoughts, a gust of wind brushed past his ear as Noir rushed forward briskly, seizing Jin Jiuchi by the collar and pressing him against the wall!
This was the first time Gu Luoxin had ever seen such an aggressive Noir that he couldn’t help but be stupefied. He had not even wrapped his head around the current situation yet when he heard Noir ask, his voice tense,
"Who— no, what are you?"
