Chapter 46: His resolve

Chapter 46: His resolve

Samuel walked through the halls of Lucas Realty, his mind still clouded with suspicion. Every glance and hushed conversation among employees felt like another layer of mystery unraveling around him.

The company he had once commanded with confidence now seemed like a web of hidden agendas. The people he had trusted were no longer safe from his doubts.

His phone buzzed, snapping him out of his thoughts. It was a message from Zinnia: "Thank you for the lunch. It was lovely."

---

Earlier that day, Samuel had taken the time to prepare a special lunch for her. He wanted to remind Zinnia of their bond, to show her that she was still cherished amidst the chaos surrounding them.

He filled a basket with her favorite sandwiches, a fresh salad, and a slice of rich chocolate cake. It felt small, but he hoped it would mean something to her.

"Timmy," Samuel called, summoning his assistant. "I need you to take this to Zinnia at home. Make sure she gets it."

"Got it," Timmy replied, taking the basket with a nod. "I’ll head over right now."

As Timmy left, Samuel watched him go, feeling a flicker of hope. He wanted Zinnia to appreciate the effort and feel loved, even from a distance.

When Timmy returned a short while later, he had a satisfied grin on his face. "She loved it, sir. She smiled the entire time I was there and thanked me for bringing it."

Warmth spread in Samuel’s chest. Zinnia’s smile had always been his favorite sight. "Did she seem okay?"

"She seemed better than before," Timmy reported. "But she still has that weight in her eyes. You know how she gets when things are tough."

Samuel nodded, understanding all too well. Despite the complications in their relationship, Zinnia still reached out with small gestures of gratitude. Maybe there was still hope for them, he thought.

But that hope felt fragile, as delicate as glass. One harsh word or wrong step could shatter everything. With James back in the picture, Samuel wasn’t sure how long he could hold on to Zinnia without losing her completely.

---

Pushing those thoughts aside and focusing on the present, Samuel continued down the corridor until he reached his office. Timmy was already waiting for him outside, clipboard in hand, his expression serious.

"I’ve started looking into the board members, as you asked," Timmy said quietly. "But it’s going to take time. Some of these people have layers of connections that are hard to track."

"I expected that," Samuel replied, his face impassive. "But don’t stop until we know everything. I want to find out who’s really behind the news about James, who’s aligned with Revilo, and who’s just sitting on the fence, waiting for the wind to blow in their favor."

Timmy nodded and stepped aside as Samuel entered his office. The room was large and sleek, with floor-to-ceiling windows that let in a flood of light. Yet today, even the sunlight couldn’t chase away the shadows creeping into Samuel’s mind.

Sitting at his desk, Samuel leaned back in his chair and stared at the ceiling. He allowed himself to think about Zinnia again—about their life together.

After spending the day with her yesterday, things had felt different. Not better, but more familiar, more like the early days of their engagement when they had still been hopeful and figuring each other out.

He remembered their first meeting during the blind date, how awkward it had been, and how neither of them had expected much. Yet somehow, they had ended up together, and for a while, it had been good.

Samuel had thought he could love her, that they could build a life together. But then, the coldness had crept in, almost without warning.

He felt like a failure for thinking their relationship might end up like his parents’—once happy, now divorced. So he had tried hard not to tie the knot, to keep extending their supposed marriage, believing that Zinnia might move on.

It was easier that way. At least they weren’t married yet, so she was still free to go. Without marriage, a divorce wouldn’t happen between them.

His parents’ divorce had scared him of the unknown feelings. The fear of suddenly being loved only to be left behind later had held him back. He was used to coldness and loneliness, so he chose to stay in his comfort zone.

But now, with everything happening, he suddenly realized how much of a coward he had been. He should have fought for Zinnia. He should have fought for their future. He should have faced the uncertain future head-on.

Not fighting for his happiness seemed cruel, especially with the regret of not fighting for his love weighing on him. He no longer wanted any regrets.

He had wasted all the time he had. Those moments should have been happy times if he had been true to his feelings.

Now he wouldn’t be that scared and weak man again. He would fight until the very end for the life he once dreamed of and continued dreaming of with Zinnia.

Yet, he also knew he couldn’t be selfish. He didn’t want to make Zinnia sad again. Her happiness mattered most to him, and he would be a true man, ready to accept whatever ending awaited them.

His resolve solidified within him, and he clenched his fists, determination flooding his veins. The shadows in his mind began to lift, replaced by a fierce light.

"I will fight for you, Zinnia," he vowed quietly to himself.

His heart raced with purpose. He was ready to confront whatever came next, ready to take action and fight for their love. Whatever the outcome, he would stand strong.

This time, he would be the man Zinnia deserved. He would be the partner who fought for her and for their future together. He would prove that love was worth the struggle.

Samuel knew the path ahead would be difficult. But he was prepared to face it head-on. This was his chance to make things right, to mend the pieces of their relationship that had frayed over time.

No more hiding. No more running away from his feelings. He would show Zinnia that he was all in. The time for hesitation was over. It was time for action.

He stood up from his desk, filled with a new energy. There was a fire in his heart, a determination that burned brighter than any doubt.

"Let’s do this," he whispered to himself. "For Zinnia. For us."
