Chapter 217: Chapter 217: Inner Disciple Selection Ceremony! (6)

Then—

"Ahhh!"

"Eeeeek!"

More desperate screams echoed from behind.

Reon swiftly turned around—only to witness a horrifying scene:

The four brothers who had just defeated the puppet now struck down by unseen swords from behind.

"W-What...?" Reon muttered in shock, eyes wide.

Their lifeless bodies crumpled to the ground.

Then—

From the shadows, six figures emerged.

The leader—a moderately handsome man with long, flowing hair—knelt down and casually picked up the Purple Crystal from the ground.

He laughed darkly.

"Hahaha... those fools fought themselves to exhaustion for this Purple Crystal, and we just walk in and take it with ease. Stealing is definitely the smartest strategy. No wasted energy."

A beautiful female beside him smiled coldly.

"That’s right, Brother Shi. It’s barely been two hours, and we’ve already stolen two Purple Crystals. Just four more and all of us will pass this round."

Brother Shi grinned wider.

"Hahaha, exactly. Let’s keep going."

Reon exhaled slowly, his expression hardening.

’So... it’s already begun. The disciple hunt.’

His eyes lingered for a moment on the corpses of the four fallen brothers.

’Alas... those poor disciples. They fought so hard...’

He turned to leave, his footsteps light.

’But such is the nature of this cruel cultivation world—justice and fairness are mere illusions here.’

’And I’m no saint, to avenge strangers I’ve never known. Best to disappear before they notice me—’

But then—

"Hey, you rat-like bastard. Enjoyed watching us kill those worms?"

A sharp voice rang out from behind.

It was Brother Shi.

’What...? They noticed me?’

Reon stopped instantly and turned, his mind going on high alert.

The leader was already walking toward him, an arrogant grin on his face.

"How did you spot me?" Reon asked calmly.

Brother Shi raised a hand, pointing toward the tree Reon had just been hiding beside.

Reon followed his gesture—and his eyes widened.

Perched silently on a high branch was a cloaked figure dressed in black, still as a shadow.

’What? Someone was there the whole time... and I didn’t sense a thing?’

’He must have used a sheath technique to conceal his presence. And without any killing intent, my Instinctual Awareness couldn’t detect him.’

Brother Shi smirked. "He’s my trusted shadow. Always keeping an eye out. Very useful for sniffing out insects like you."

’That voice... the arrogance in his tone. He’s definitely from a noble clan—probably a high-ranking one too. Better to leave before things escalate.’ Reon thought.

Brother Shi narrowed his eyes.

"Now then—do you have any Purple Crystals on you? If so, hand them over quietly. I don’t like making messes unless I have to."

Reon replied calmly, "I don’t. Haven’t found a single one yet. I was planning to ambush those fools myself. But since you beat me to it, I won’t interfere."

Brother Shi studied him for a moment before chuckling.

"Well, seems like you’re telling the truth. In that case, how about this? Join us. With our strength, you’ll breeze through this round."

Reon gave a faint smile and a respectful nod.

"I appreciate the offer. Truly. But I prefer walking on my own. If you’ll excuse me, I’ll take my leave now."

A man beside Brother Shi barked furiously,

"W-What?! You arrogant bastard! How dare you reject Young Master Shi Quinji’s generous offer?!"

The woman next to him sneered, her eyes blazing.

"You’ve got guts, refusing Brother Shi’s goodwill. You must have a death wish!"

Three more disciples quickly stepped forward, blocking Reon’s path.

’I knew it... Damn it. Why is my luck always so cursed?’ Reon grimaced inwardly.

Shi Quinji’s voice rang out, steeped in arrogance.

"Hehe... You’ve seen something you shouldn’t have—my personal servant ending lives. You think I’ll just let you stroll away and spread rumors?"

"I’m Shi Quinji of the High-Class Shi Family. My reputation is everything. So, you’ve got two choices—submit and become my servant, or die here."

’Stage 4 Foundation Realm... He’s no weakling. He’d make a decent tool. My goal is to make it into the top twenty during this ceremony. I’ll need slaves... pawns I can throw away if things go south,’ Shi Quinji thought to himself with a twisted grin.

Reon exhaled sharply, brushing back a stray strand of hair.

"Hey, are you stupid? Do you really think I’m the only one who saw your men commit murder?"

"Didn’t you hear? The elders are watching everything from outside. There are spiritual projection screens showing every fight. Your little ’secret’ isn’t so secret."

Shi Quinji burst into mocking laughter.

"Hahaha! You’re the idiot here. Do you think I’m the only one spilling blood? Everyone’s doing it. No elder has time to single me out among thousands of disciples."

’And even if they do suspect something, I’ll just claim my unruly servant acted on his own. They’ll believe it—and if not, I’ll eliminate them myself under the guise of punishment.’

’No one will question me. Haha... that’s precisely why I’m gathering these pawns.’ he thought smugly.

Reon’s expression darkened, his voice cold.

"Whatever. I’m not here to argue with delusional trash. I’m not interested in being anyone’s slave—especially not yours."

A thick vein pulsed on Shi Quinji’s forehead, his smile finally cracking into fury.

"You’ve got a sharp tongue for someone about to be broken. I hate talkative dogs."

He snapped his fingers.

"Everyone—beat this bastard half to death. We’ll collar him afterward."

Reon let out another sigh, stretching his neck as if loosening up for a workout.

"I really can’t catch a break... Looks like I’ll have to kill another six today."

’Well then... I suppose it’s a good chance to test out my new strength.’

Four of Shi Quinji’s followers swaggered forward, smirking with smug confidence.

"This is all on you, kid," one of them said with a mocking grin. "You shouldn’t have gone against Young Master Shi Quinji."

"Yeah," another added, shaking his head, "if you’d just accepted his offer quietly, you could’ve been one of us by now."

"You brought this on yourself. Don’t blame anyone else when we break your bones."

Reon clicked his tongue, clearly irritated.

"Enough of your barking already."

He raised his head, his eyes gleaming coldly.

"If you’re going to fight, then come at me. I don’t have time to waste on nobodies—I’ve still got a thousand miles to travel hunting a Peak-Stage Foundation Puppet."

The smug expressions quickly turned to fury.

"You arrogant bastard!" one of them growled. "We’ll kill you!"
