Weird Rules Rumor: At The Beginning, He Insisted That He Was Not Dead
Chapter 159: Letters from the Future (10)

The dazzlingly lit corridor was plunged into silence. The air seemed thick, as if soaked in glue. Each of Bai Liang's breaths echoed with peculiar clarity.

He retrieved a black access card and swiped it against the door lock. After a "beep" sound, the screen displayed a message: "Authentication successful."

A click echoed, and Bai Liang pushed open the laboratory door. Directly before him, a window revealed two women in white medical coats.

“Good day, Doctor Bai,” one of them said, a strained smile on her face. “Which department do you require?”

Her smile felt artificial, a practiced professional veneer. Bai Liang paid it no mind, but his attention was drawn more to the other woman.

From the moment he stepped in, her gaze had remained fixed on him, scrutinizing him with a palpable hint of wariness.

Such a gaze was plainly unfitting for a nurse. No sooner had the first woman spoken than the second promptly added:

“Doctor Bai, are you feeling unwell?”

“Recently, many company employees have been experiencing stomach problems. Perhaps you should undergo an examination in the gastroenterology department?”

A subtle tension coiled within Bai Liang. He briefly glanced at the nurse. He had just reviewed the rules, and here, before him, was a stark instance of an attempt to subvert them.

Disregarding her words, Bai Liang calmly addressed the first nurse:

“I need a regular consultation room.”

“Very well, Doctor Bai,” she nodded and swiftly began writing something.

A moment later, she tore a sheet from the pad and extended it to Bai Liang:

“The consultation room is nearby, turn left.”

“Thank you,” Bai Liang politely acknowledged, taking the referral. As he turned to leave, he subtly cast a glance at the second nurse. He observed that her expression had shifted, a clear flicker of anger now visible in her eyes.

Lowering his gaze to the admission slip he held in his hands, Bai Liang noted that it contained only the most rudimentary details about him.

Clutching the slip, he traversed the corridor, then made a left turn, finding himself before a door. Above it hung a sign bearing the inscription “Consultation Room”.

Bai Liang's attention drifted to another door directly opposite. A sign on it proclaimed “Operating Room”. And at the very end of the corridor, where both doors converged, stood yet anotheran iron door.

Most likely, the laboratoryhis ultimate objectivelay beyond this door.

The doctor’s appointment was nothing more than a pretense. His true objective: to infiltrate the laboratory and procure that very blue test tube, as mentioned in the letter.

After a quick survey, Bai Liang’s gaze returned to the consultation room door, and he rapped on it.

Knock-knock!

“Come in!” A slightly aged voice resonated from within. Hearing it, one could readily envision an elderly individual seated inside.

However, Bai Liang did not immediately push the door open. Instead, he drew closer to the peephole.

The peephole was designed as a one-way lens: from inside the room, one could clearly discern what was happening outside, yet from the exterior, peering in was practically impossible. This feature was implemented to deter any attempts at covert observation.

But for Bai Liang, such a safeguard proved futile. His keen vision was sharp enough to discern the number of occupants within the room, even through the peephole!

- 【“Peering through the peephole to count people? Bai-san, are you truly that meticulous?”】

- 【“If I were in his place, I’d just ask how many doctors were inside, or try to look through the peephole too. There aren’t any other options anyway.”】

- 【“There’s no need to praise Bai-san so much. He’s truly cool, but not so much that every single one of his actions is a masterful move.”】

- 【“Hey, I remember your ID! Last time, in the Mirror Castle mission, you said that all admiration for Bai-san was too modest!”】

- 【“You... why are you accusing me so groundlessly? It’s just an ID coincidence!”】

...

Through the peephole, Bai Liang observed an elderly, grey-haired man seated at a desk in the consultation room. Beside him, a young doctor tinkered with some apparatus, while another physician sat engrossed before a computer screen.

Three physicians. Bai Liang dismissed his reservations and laid his hand on the doorknob, only to halt abruptly.

Where had the individual he'd previously observed vanished to?

With a flicker of perplexity, Bai Liang shifted his gaze to the operating room across the hall.

The operating room was entirely isolated, devoid of a peephole to peer inside. However, Bai Liang possessed the Insight Eye skill.

Activating it, he dispelled all obstructions from his sight and was able to perceive what transpired within the operating room.

Only a single physician was seated within; no other individuals were visible.

If that person isn't in the operating room, then where could he be?

Bai Liang cast a glance at the laboratory at the end of the corridor. The answer became glaringly obvious: that individual was not a dungeon NPC, but a Player.

And he hadn't come here for treatment, but for something located within the laboratory.

Could it be that blue test tube containing the reagent?

A cunning glint flickered in Bai Liang’s eyes. Instead of proceeding to the consultation room, he redirected himself towards the patient registration window.

“Doctor Bai, do you require anything further?” the nurse inquired.

Bai Liang briefly glanced at the other nurse beside her, who remained silent and peculiar, then stated with a smile:

“I just saw my friend enter here. He mentioned he had a stomachache, so I decided to look for him. But I’ve been through everywhereboth the consultation room and the operating roomand he’s nowhere to be found. Where could he have gone?”

The nurse offered a faint smile and replied:

“Doctor Bai, while this isn’t within my scope of duties, I can offer you some advice. Perhaps your friend has already departed.”

The nurse beside her remained taciturn, but Bai Liang observed her gaze shift, growing decidedly more perilous.

Perceiving this, he offered a slight smile, then nodded and articulated:

“Is that so? Understood, thank you for your assistance.”

Having uttered this, Bai Liang turned and swiftly returned to the diagnostic room’s door.

“So, the fifth rule is likely true...” Standing by the door, he pondered the rules outlined in the announcement.

The fifth rule stated: “The laboratory features highly robust security measures, and both the diagnostic room and the operating room are absolutely safe.”

When rules contradict, it doesn’t necessarily imply that one of them is false. It’s possible that, depending on the circumstances, different rules are applied.

Consider, for instance, this specific rule. If viewed in the context of the other rules, it might appear to be false. However, if one assumes it genuinely doesn't contradict the preceding rules, then it becomes applicable!

Realizing this, Bai Liang’s lips curved into a faint, almost imperceptible smile. He hoped the other individual wouldn't be startled by his little surprise.

- 【“He smiled, he really smiled! Bai Shen’s smileand fate becomes unpredictable!”】

- 【“Can someone explain what Bai Shen was talking about with the nurse? My brain isn’t quite keeping up, what was the meaning behind his actions?”】
