"What happened?" Zheng Xianghong rushed in, her gaze fixating on Gao Jiaxing’s face, then suddenly, she couldn’t help but let out a chuckle.
Only Gao Jiaxing was flushed with embarrassment, shouting angrily, "Who let you in? Get out, get the hell out."
"Alright, alright, mom’s leaving." Zheng Xianghong’s smile hadn’t faded, amused by her son’s actions. Seeing her son now getting furiously embarrassed, she hurriedly said.
Gao Jiazhi silently looked at Gao Jiaxing and said, "You’re taking this too seriously, aren’t you? This is for women to use on their face, what are men like you needing it for?"
"If you dare spread this around, I’ll settle the score with you." After warning them, Gao Jiaxing pushed Zheng Xianghong and Gao Jiazhi out and immediately slammed the door shut.
Outside the door, Gao Jiazhi and Zheng Xianghong silently exchanged glances. Gao Jiazhi said, "Mom, see, without your help, look what Jiaxing has done to himself, wiping his face with Clam Oil, is this something men should do? If this gets out, he’d be laughed to death."
Zheng Xianghong stopped smiling and said, "Let’s wait for Xia Xiao to come back after New Year and talk about it then. You, stop talking about Jiaxing, your own affairs aren’t any better than his, but don’t you dare spread this about him. Your brother is conscious about his image; he’ll be furious and might even start a fight with you then."
"Mom, don’t worry, I won’t tell anyone. Otherwise, having such an embarrassing brother would make me look bad too."
Zheng Xianghong immediately glared at Gao Jiazhi, "Embarrassing? It’s just Clam Oil. When you kids got chapped faces during winter, I used it on you too. You saw me apply it on Jiaxing so many times when you were little, you weren’t happy until I applied more on you than on him."
Gao Jiazhi touched his face and said, "Then mom must have applied more on me and less on Jiaxing. No wonder I think my face looks better than his."
Zheng Xianghong spat, "Vain man, you and your brother are just the same."
Gao Jiazhi chuckled merrily.
Inside the room, Gao Jiaxing felt extremely annoyed, humiliated by his family catching him, and internally awkward; overall, he was just miserable. Looking at his face in the mirror, it indeed seemed a bit whiter, but the thought it was a woman’s facial product made him want to wipe it off yet also felt like it was a waste.
So, Gao Jiaxing had an awkward day and didn’t even want to step outside.
When Gao Guoqiang came back and heard from Zheng Xianghong about what Gao Jiaxing did, he scoffed disdainfully, "That’s some achievement."
Seeing Gao Guoqiang about to scold Gao Jiaxing, Zheng Xianghong quickly intervened, "Stop, he’s already furious enough to run away from home."
Gao Guoqiang immediately shut his mouth, but still told Zheng Xianghong, "Look at how you spoil him, not learning anything worthy but copying women." Gao Guoqiang was quite displeased with Gao Jiaxing’s behavior.
Zheng Xianghong huffed, "You’re his father, why don’t you teach him? Besides, he’s still young. It’s his first time liking a girl. He’s nervous and doesn’t know how to pursue her, it’s normal for him to be a bit awkward."
"You have a good relationship with Educated Youth Xia, don’t you? Could it be you don’t approve of her as your daughter-in-law?" said Gao Guoqiang.
"What do you mean by not approving? Who knows when the policies will change and these educated youths will have to return to the city? What will your son do then? Let the young handle their own affairs, why should I, as a mother, meddle?" Zheng Xianghong said, then glanced at Gao Guoqiang, "You’re his father; you have the experience, why not pass a few tricks on to your son."
"What nonsense are you talking about? Don’t you know if I have any experience?" Now it was Gao Guoqiang’s turn to feel awkward, as he stood up and said, "I’m going to check if the cattle in the shed have eaten."
Watching Gao Guoqiang walk out, Zheng Xianghong laughed, "The father and son are just the same."
Meanwhile, Xia Xiao was being taken to the county in a bullock cart, having placed her introduction letter properly, never considering spending money to take a cab to the provincial train station. If it weren’t for the fact that space wouldn’t allow her to travel far, Xia Xiao would have wished to return to City S directly from space.
Once in space, Xia Xiao checked the map inside, and indeed, it changed according to her location. This really was too advanced and magical.
Unfortunately, she couldn’t travel far in space at this moment.
So, for now, Xia Xiao entered and exited the space a few times and reached the provincial city. Compared to the smaller county location, the provincial city was much more strict.
Xia Xiao was also considering selling the things inside the space, but seeing the provincial city was stricter than the smaller county location, and since she was unfamiliar with the provincial city, she didn’t dare risk it and gave up on the idea.
The old train was very loud. Not long after boarding, Xia Xiao regretted it. The train was overcrowded with people returning home for the New Year, very cramped, and everyone was eating, making the smells strong.
The two-day and one-night train ride thoroughly exhausted Xia Xiao physically and mentally; she barely dared to sleep, always staying alert, plus the heavy smells and the noisy chatter made it even more wearing.
The most frustrating part occurred when Xia Xiao, wearing a hat pulled down low over her face, eyes closed resting, didn’t expect a train attendant to approach her soon after, "Comrade, could you please show me your introduction letter?"
Confused, Xia Xiao took out her introduction letter. The attendant examined the letter and looked at Xia Xiao asking, "Are you really from Guangming Production Team in ** County?"
"Yes, I am from City S, going home for New Year," said Xia Xiao.
After a few more questions, Xia Xiao simply took out her awards and certificates from her bag to show the attendant, who then returned the introduction letter to Xia Xiao and left.
Xia Xiao was befuddled, hearing someone whisper nearby, "So she’s just going home for New Year, I thought she might be a spy."
"But this lady is very pretty when she looks up."
Xia Xiao was completely speechless. She was reported on suspicion of being a spy, sweat.
She didn’t want to chat and make noise with them; now, they were even suspicious of her.
Fortunately, she did have a genuine introduction letter, otherwise being mistaken for a spy would have been troublesome.
Once she got out of the train station, Xia Xiao breathed a sigh of relief, vowing never to take the train again—it was too torturous. She’d rather slowly move through space, even if it took longer and saved on travel costs.
Carrying her luggage, Xia Xiao mentally repeated the address on the letter, thinking of finding a secluded place to enter space and then find her way home.
Xia Xiao then saw a young man not far away, looking around as if waiting for someone who was perhaps coming to meet someone at the train station.
However, Xia Xiao’s gaze locked onto the young man’s face—it bore some resemblance to her former boss, Old Dong, when he was young. The company had a photo of Old Dong at thirty-four, which is why she remembered.
Although this young man was still young, he looked so much like him.
