Chapter 80: Chapter 79: Carrying You (90+ Monthly Votes)
Xia Xiao was in a predicament now. She wanted to shake off Gao Jiaxing, but as dusk was fast approaching, Gao Jiaxing definitely wouldn’t let her walk the night roads alone.
"Are you in a hurry to get back?" Gao Jiaxing asked again.
Xia Xiao nodded, and immediately Gao Jiaxing began to take off his coat to give to her, but Xia Xiao hurriedly stopped him, "Brother Gao, there’s no need, I’ll wait until it’s a bit darker to leave. You should put your coat back on, it’s getting late and starting to get cold."
Gao Jiaxing eventually put his coat back on and said to Xia Xiao, "Wait here for me, I’ll go buy something for you."
"There’s no need, Brother Gao, I have everything prepared, I’ll be fine once I get back to the production team," Xia Xiao insisted, preventing Gao Jiaxing from going to buy anything for her. At this moment, Xia Xiao also regretted not wearing her heavy coat because of the warmer weather today. Otherwise, if she had covered up with the big coat, nothing would have happened.
When the sky darkened just a little, the two promptly started walking towards the production team. There were no ox carts available at this time; if they had taken an ox cart and helped Xia Xiao onto it, she would have felt even more embarrassed.
So, they were now slowly making their way to the production team, neither of them speaking. Xia Xiao felt a bit uncomfortable in her lower abdomen. She pondered whether to say she needed to urinate and use that as an excuse to temporarily break away from Gao Jiaxing to drink some spring water in her space, or to use a menstrual pad.
While she was thinking, Xia Xiao, not paying attention, stepped into a hole and fell to the ground.
Gao Jiaxing, helping her up, said wordlessly, "Aren’t you watching where you’re going? How could you be so careless?"
Although the sky was getting darker, the path was still very clear, and Xia Xiao couldn’t respond to Gao Jiaxing’s remark.
Xia Xiao tried to stand up, but suddenly let out a sharp intake of breath as she twisted her ankle.
"What’s wrong?" Gao Jiaxing asked.
"I twisted my ankle." At this moment, Xia Xiao felt she was really unlucky.
"Can you still walk?" Gao Jiaxing asked again.
Xia Xiao tried to walk, but it was very painful, so she shook her head and looked at Gao Jiaxing, "Brother Gao, can you please leave me alone?"
Gao Jiaxing pursed his lips and said, "Don’t be upset. It’s my fault for calling you out. Otherwise, you wouldn’t be walking back to the production team alone at night and twisting your ankle."
"No, that’s not what I mean." Xia Xiao didn’t blame Gao Jiaxing, she even felt grateful to him. But if he hadn’t been there, she could have gone into her space.
If there were no space, it wouldn’t matter, but having this convenience and not being able to use it felt really bad.
At this time, there was nobody around on the road back to the Guangming Production Team, and Xia Xiao also knew that with Gao Jiaxing’s character, he wouldn’t leave her to walk alone, so she sighed to herself.
"Come on, I’ll carry you," Gao Jiaxing said.
"That doesn’t seem right," Xia Xiao considered her trousers, but the idea of walking on her own was even less appealing, and she couldn’t use her space either.
"Come on, no one will see. What are you afraid of? When we’re nearly back to the production team, I’ll let you walk on your own."
"I’m worried about dirtying your clothes," said Xia Xiao.
"What’s that? Wash it, and it’ll be gone."
Well, with that said by Gao Jiaxing, Xia Xiao could only rest on his back, letting him carry her. She still felt a bit embarrassed in her heart.
At this time, Xia Xiao was very annoyed with herself; her chest had been developing some lately, causing her a vague pain. How could she not have anticipated this?
Gao Jiaxing carried Xia Xiao and continued walking forward, his stride steady, his shoulders broad and dependable.
Xia Xiao could no longer regard Gao Jiaxing as an ordinary youth at this point, and Gao Jiaxing seemed more mature, not at all like a seventeen-year-old.
The night was cool as water, the cold wind howling. Xia Xiao was being carried on someone’s back for the first time, a strange feeling she couldn’t shake off from her heart.
"Brother Gao, do you like me?" Xia Xiao suddenly asked, surprised at her own question. However, Gao Jiaxing had been really good to her; even many people in the Guangming Production Team thought she was the future bride that the Gao family had set their sights on.
"No," Gao Jiaxing replied.
Xia Xiao responded with an "Oh" and wasn’t too disappointed. Perhaps because she never expected anything, there was no disappointment to be felt.
But at that moment, Xia Xiao thought Gao Jiaxing was quite nice. He gave off a sense of safety and reliability.
"Why do you ask?" Gao Jiaxing inquired.
Xia Xiao chuckled, "Brother Gao, you’ve been very good to me." And indeed, nobody had ever treated her this well before; she even considered asking Zheng Xianghong to be her godmother.
"My mom has been very good to you, too," Gao Jiaxing said.
Xia Xiao nodded and suggested, "Brother Gao, what if I asked auntie to be my godmother, then you and Brother Gao would both be my brothers."
"Don’t you already have a brother?" Gao Jiaxing asked.
Xia Xiao paused. Right, she had forgotten about Xia Rong, her own brother.
"My mom said you are her old friend beyond age; you just need to be good to my mom in the future, she already has a goddaughter," Gao Jiaxing said.
Xia Xiao burst into laughter. She and Zheng Xianghong were indeed friends beyond age, which explained their close bond. After laughing, Xia Xiao felt deeply moved, "Brother Gao, don’t worry. Auntie is my old friend, my very first old friend."
Gao Jiaxing’s lips twitched slightly, and he heard Xia Xiao ask, "Who’s auntie’s goddaughter?"
"You haven’t met her. She’s from out of town, the daughter of one of my mom’s friends," Gao Jiaxing explained.
Xia Xiao responded with an "Oh," not probing further as her interest waned.
"Brother Gao, you can put me down now. I’m quite heavy; you must be tired from carrying me?" Xia Xiao looked at the long distance they had walked and, thinking Gao Jiaxing must be tired too, she suggested.
"No need, I’m not tired. Your little bit of weight doesn’t count for much." Gao Jiaxing continued walking, not putting down Xia Xiao. He had shouldered sacks of rice and hemp; Xia Xiao’s weight truly did not seem heavy to him.
"Brother Gao, you’re going to take the high school entrance exams next semester, how is your revision going?" Xia Xiao tried to strike up a conversation.
"Don’t talk, the wind is strong. If you’re tired, you can just lean against me and sleep for a while. I’ll call you when we arrive," Gao Jiaxing responded, not answering Xia Xiao’s question but instead telling her to rest against his back.
Xia Xiao responded with an "Oh," thinking she might be talking too much and causing Gao Jiaxing to expend energy, so she dared not say more.
Now, Xia Xiao also felt somewhat tired, so she simply leaned against Gao Jiaxing’s shoulder, closed her eyes, and soon fell asleep.
Gao Jiaxing felt Xia Xiao’s steady breathing and smiled silently to himself—so carefree that she wouldn’t know if she’d been sold off.
If Xia Xiao was being stubborn, Gao Jiaxing wasn’t much better. His annoyance was no less than hers. He even thought, if he had known, he wouldn’t have called out to Xia Xiao. He should’ve let her return with the others and then just driven the ox cart to the river for a wash. They ended up walking this night road together.
Had both his hands not been holding Xia Xiao’s legs in place, Gao Jiaxing would’ve liked to slap himself to clear his mind; he was becoming dumber and dumber, his kind intentions turning sour.
On this journey, Gao Jiaxing walked very far, seemingly tireless as he carried Xia Xiao on.
