Chapter 250: Chapter 249 Attitude
After leaving Eldest Aunt Xia’s place, Xia Xiao, Xia Lin, and Xia Hua each had a large red envelope in hand.
Xia Xiao started, thinking Eldest Aunt had given them far too much.
Once back at her grandmother’s house, Xia Xiao told Li Wenjuan about it, to which Li Wenjuan said, "How can you take your eldest aunt’s money? Thirty yuan, that’s a lot. Your aunt doesn’t have it easy either."
"It’s already been given, and it’s not possible to return it now. Just give it to Mom." Xia Xiao directly handed the money to Li Wenjuan, and Xia Lin and Xia Hua, too, obediently handed theirs over.
Li Wenjuan did not take Xia Xiao’s money but did accept Xia Lin and Xia Hua’s, telling Xia Xiao, "You keep this money for yourself. You’re going to the army, and you’ll need some for the road."
"You should be filial to your eldest aunt, you know. Our family has always had it tough, and she has been a big help to us." Li Wenjuan recounted stories about Eldest Aunt Xia and mentioned the second and third aunts as well; after all, none of it had been easy for their family. She relayed who had helped them, hoping her children would remember.
"Mom, I won’t have time to visit the second aunt and third aunt right now. I’ll visit their places next time," Xia Xiao said.
"If you’re busy, go and take care of your business. Your family and relatives are all in the city. Just come back and visit when you can, anytime is fine." Li Wenjuan said.
Xia Xiao nodded, then asked about Xia Jing and Xia Hong, to which Li Wenjuan replied, "They’re not back yet."
Xia Xiao thought it strange as it was already noon when Xia Jing and Xia Hong hurriedly returned.
"Mom, we’re leaving with the others this afternoon. There’s a truck to take us to the train station. I just need to make it to the station with my elder sisters." Xia Hong said.
Xia Jing nodded. "Yes, we’re heading to the countryside today. It was only today we found out that quite a few people are going to the same province as my eldest sister, although not as many as some other provinces."
Xia Xiao was surprised. "So soon?"
"Yes, everyone is leaving today. If we don’t join the main group, we’ll have to find our own way later on," Xia Hong explained.
Xia Xiao turned to Xia Jing, "Sis, are you going with them, or are you coming with me to the army?"
Xia Jing said, "Elder sister, I think I’ll go report to the production team first. You go see your brother-in-law. I wouldn’t be of any use in the army."
Xia Jing shook her head, still somewhat dejected after breaking up with Yan Hao.
"Well then, get acquainted with the production team first. I might have to stay in the army for a few days; I won’t return so quickly."
Xia Xiao was still considering whether or not to take Xia Jing with her to the army, but seeing her condition, obviously still unable to let go of Yan Hao, she decided it would be better for Xia Jing to go to the countryside with others from the city.
Without her around, Xia Jing might get her mind on more practical things and not dwell on her feelings.
In the afternoon, Xia Xiao, Xia Chunrong, and Xia Jing saw Xia Hong off at the train station.
"Sister, I saw Yan Hao." Xia Jing pointed towards the distance.
"Don’t go over there; his family is with him," Xia Xiao shook her head at Xia Jing. "Didn’t you see that his family is keeping an eye on him? They look scared that he’ll run away."
Xia Xiao wasn’t wrong; Madam Yan and Father Yan were personally escorting Yan Hao to the train station, determined to ensure their son boarded the train. Once he got off, being received by his elder brother would suffice.
"Brother, you should head back," Xia Xiao told Xia Chunrong.
"I’m not in a hurry," Xia Chunrong shook his head.
So they watched as Yan Hao boarded the train and Madam Yan and Father Yan left, satisfied. They watched the train to H Province slowly pull away.
Wow, Xia Jing crouched down, crying uncontrollably. Only now, as they truly parted, did she feel the real pain; it felt as if her soul was being wrenched away.
Xia Xiao and Xia Chunrong didn’t try to console her. A passerby with a kind heart asked upon seeing Xia Jing’s tears, "What’s the matter?"
"She’s been separated from her partner; they’re heading to different places," Xia Chunrong replied.
"What’s so difficult about that? Just follow him. The production team there will accept you too."
"I’ll go buy a ticket for her right now." Xia Xiao gave Xia Chunrong a look and quickly led Xia Jing away.
She wasn’t going to let Xia Jing go to H Province. With Yan Hao’s brother and sister-in-law there, and the Yan family’s disapproval, it would make no difference if Xia Jing chased Yan Hao to H Province; it would be like torturing herself.
"Cool your eyes." Xia Xiao handed a damp handkerchief to Xia Jing, who, in reality, was quite beautiful. It’s just that she usually dressed casually and appeared rather androgynous.
After the Xia family moved, with Xia Xiao away and Xia Chunrong at work, Xia Jing had to protect her younger siblings and often fought with nearby kids. To the neighbors, she was like a tomboy.
"Brother, sister, I’m fine. Don’t worry about me." Xia Jing wiped her tears and then took the handkerchief from Xia Xiao to cool her eyes.
"Do you want to come with me to the army?" Xia Xiao asked, seeing Xia Jing like this and feeling somewhat concerned. She seemed tough on the outside, but inside she was fragile.
"I’ll go to the production team," Xia Jing shook her head. Why should she tag along when her sister was going to see her brother-in-law?
"Then it’s up to you." Xia Xiao didn’t insist further.
"Brother, you should head back. I hope our youngest sister can finish high school, and my little brother too. If they can study, they should at least make it through high school," Xia Xiao said.
Xia Chunrong nodded. "Then take care of yourselves. I’m going to head back now. Remember to write."
After Xia Chunrong left, Xia Xiao breathed a sigh of relief. Soon enough, she also saw Xia Jing off and then slipped away into a space.
"Didn’t you have to deliver a letter to Sun Yuhua’s family?" Shitou said.
"Oh," Xia Xiao exclaimed, slapping her forehead, having nearly forgotten.
"Let’s go to Sun Yuhua’s house," Xia Xiao said.
Soon, Xia Xiao arrived at Sun Yuhua’s place, where Sun Mu was home alone.
Xia Xiao delivered the letter to Sun Mu. This time, Sun Mu was less enthusiastic, simply saying to Xia Xiao, "That disobedient girl, marrying off without a word, with no regard for her parents. When you go back, tell her not to send any more letters home."
With that, Sun Mu did not even let Xia Xiao inside before closing the door.
Xia Xiao didn’t linger any longer, feeling more sympathy for Sun Yuhua. The Suns were just too selfish.
Entering the space once more, Xia Xiao did not stay in the city any longer and headed straight for Gao Jiaxing’s location.
At the army, Liu Yuanchao said, "Didn’t you say Xiaoxiao was coming to see you? Did you ask her to bring pickles?"
"No," Gao Jiaxing shook his head.
"Why didn’t you tell her to bring some pickles?" Liu Yuanchao complained.
Gao Jiaxing gave him a look, "If you want to eat them, buy them yourself, or you could make your own."
"The ones outside don’t taste good, and I have no idea how Xiaoxiao makes them."
As the words of Liu Yuanchao fell, Gao Jiaxing proudly said, "She learned from my mom."
That’s what Xia Xiao had told Gao Jiaxing, so he believed it too. But this beautiful misunderstanding was, to Xia Xiao’s pleasure, very welcome.
